jazzweek.com • October 16, 2006 JazzWeek 9 Industry Q&A: Brian Camelio, President of ArtistShare

azzWeek’s tech-oriented Q&A returns for a chat with Artist- JShare’s Brian Camelio. A lot of people in the industry and outside it talk about how the music business needs to change, but Camelio has gone ahead come up with a new para- digm that allows fans to invest in the artist’s project as it begins or contin- ues rather than buying the end prod- uct. So far it’s working and the label has issued some of the finest jazz ef- forts to come out in recent years, and we’re not just talking about Maria Schneider’s Grammy-winning Con- cert In The Garden. We caught up with Camelio to chat about how this new breed of label works. – Tad Hendrickson

JazzWeek: Can you give a brief background of your involvement in jazz? Brian Camelio: I have been involved in music since I was 5 or 6 years old. I learned to play rock guitar as a kid and became fascinated with classical music in my teens. I have a degree in composition from the University of Vermont. It was after I graduated from college that I was bitten by the jazz bug. Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Carmen McCrae were my favorites and then I heard Jim Hall and that absolutely was it for me. I played professionally for a total of about 15 years. How about a brief history of the label? Can you explain what you have pat- ented and how you built out the label? I started ArtistShare in the fall of 2000. My friends were having a re- ➤ jazzweek.com • October 16, 2006 JazzWeek 10 Industry Q&A: Brian Camelio (continued)

ally hard time with the labels namely Maria Schneider, David Binney, Jim Hall and Chris Potter. At the same time I was beginning to realize that there would really be no such thing as DRM [digital rights management] for music. I wrote a program to capture the music from the earphone jack of my computer that would convert it to WAV file [an uncompressed audio file]. I knew then that was “game over” for the industry. I started to think about what was really valuable. My friends are some of the most interesting people I have ever met and their creative process was fascinating. I started to think about a business I started to model where the value of the product was the artist themselves. ArtistShare think about was born. I filed for patent on the business process of funding creative projects through the fan base over the internet. I have built the company on the prem- a business ise that the creative process is the true thing of value. model where ArtistShare works from a different business paradigm. I attribute this to the fact that the artist is now ArtistShare working directly for the fan. There are no buffers or excuses. was born. This is really a tech-oriented label, per your background. Is this unique methodology something that some artists have difficulty understanding? Absolutely. Not so much that it is tech oriented, but more so the concept of “What you give is what you get.” The record industry has brainwashed the art- ists into thinking that they are being handed something as a reward for their creativity. There is a direct correlation between the amount of effort that is put into keeping in touch with the fans and the success of the artist. It is all about connecting with other people. This is a foreign concept to artists accustomed to the record industry. Direct contact with the fans is powerful and it is some- thing the traditional model largely ignored. What do you mean by getting fans to “participate” in the creative process? Fans participate by buying into the project before it is created, thus active- ly participating in the creation of the new work. This is a broad concept and depending on the artist can mean many different things. It is up to the artist how the fans participate. What are the challenges of marketing this music and label? It is actually quite easy. Finding artists that truly understand the power of connecting directly with the fans can be challenging sometimes. How do artists get paid? What kind of breakdown does this approach offer? ➤ They get 85% of all sales from their sites. jazzweek.com • October 16, 2006 JazzWeek 11 Industry Q&A: Brian Camelio (continued)

How do you survive on 15%? We supply many additional services to the artist a la carte as well such as site design, project consultation, merchandise manufacturing, on site event docu- mentation, etc. ... What is this label’s biggest asset? The artists’ willingness to share their creative process with the fans. Did you come out of the arts or non-profit world? I am an ex-professional musician. I guess that means the arts world. Why does this approach work for jazz artists in particular? It actually works for all creative artists. Jazz artists seem to gravitate towards it since it has proven to be successful for jazz artists in the past. Do you feel that style of label has a limited or unlimited appeal: For exam- ple, if a larger selling artist like Diana Krall or Chris Botti were to do it, would it work as it does for artists who sell smaller amounts? It is hard to say. I built this model based on what I would like to see from my favorite artists. From my experience so far, the people who say they are not inter- ested in the process and just want the product have not yet experienced the excitement of witnessing the cre- ative process. It depends on the artist more than the level of success of the artist. ArtistShare isn’t limited to releasing albums. What other formats or genres are you involved in? We are involved in music, film, photography, fine art, etc. We also license artists’ works. What has been the successful and creative project to date? What made it so? Maria Schneider won a Grammy for her CD Concert In The Garden which was the first album in history to win a Grammy that was not available in stores. That was pretty good. I am partial to Jim Hall as I feel he is one of the most creative living artists today. If ArtistShare is the present, what do you feel is the next step in the artist/label partnership? I see the music/arts industry as a service industry, not a retail industry. I also see a huge glut of music flooding the market. The “label” will become a way to filter all of this and I think that label “brands” will play an important role to the consumer navigating through all of the stuff out there.
