Swimming & Diving Page 4 Page 5 HERNANDEZ COMPETES AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP Junior Johvonne Hernandez (Port Isabel, Texas/Port Isabel HS) represented Syracuse at the NCAA Indoor Championship on Friday, March 12. She placed 14th out Johvonne of 17 competitors in the weight Hernandez throw event after entering the competition as the 17th participant. Hernandez recorded a throw of 18.62 meters on her third attempt. Candice Scott, a junior from Florida, won the event with a throw of 23.05 meters.

The track and field team begins the outdoor portion of its schedule at the Hurricane Invitational on Saturday, March 20.

1 SU LOSES BIG EAST OPENER VERSUS GEORGETOWN The Orangewomen began conference play on Saturday, March 13 versus the eighth-ranked defending BIG EAST Champion . With Georgetown ahead 2-1, the Hoyas used a 5-0 run over the course of 25:14 to take control of the game and went on to win by the score of 10-5. The Orangewomen are 1-2 overall and own an 0-1 record in league action.

KASEL SETS PERSONAL-BEST Sophomore goalie Jennifer Kasel (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) made her third-career start versus the Hoyas. She faced 32 Georgetown shots and made a personal-best 13 saves, including two-of-three free-position shots. Kasel has played 172 of a possible 180 minutes between the pipes for SU and leads the Orangewomen with 132 saves.

PALLADINO FINDS SCORING COLUMN VERSUS GEORGETOWN Jennifer Junior Courtney Palladino (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) Kasel notched her first goal of the 2003-04 campaign with a tally in the second half against Georgetown. It was the seventh goal of her career and her eighth career point. Palladino leads SU with eight draw controls this season.

JOINES CONTINUES TO CLIMB UP CAREER CHARTS Junior Monica Joines (White Hall, Md./North Harford) tied former SU standout Karen Healy for seventh on the Orangewomen’s all-time goals list with two goals against Georgetown. She now has 53 career tallies. Joines also passed Healy for Courtney seventh on SU’s all-time points chart and has 65 Palladino for her career. Joines ranks second on the team in both goals (seven) and points (nine). She is tied for the team lead with two assists and leads SU with 21 shots and two free-position tallies.

MINUTEWOMEN UP NEXT FOR THE ORANGE Syracuse will attempt to halt its two-game losing streak when it hosts Monica Joines notched Massachusetts on Friday, March 19 at the . 2 ORANGEWOMEN END SPRING BREAK WEEK WITH 4-3 RECORD SU went 4-3 in its final seven games of its spring break trip to California. The Orangewomen won four consecutive games, defeating the University of San Diego in both ends of a doubleheader and then knocking off Wisconsin and San Jose State in the first two games of the National Invitational Softball Tournament in Sunnyvale, Calif. SU ended the week with three losses to Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

ROSE’S BAT BLOOMS IN WARM CALIFORNIA SUN Junior outfielder Tanya Rose (Milwaukie, Ore./Rex Putnam) caught fire at the plate in the Orangewomen’s last seven games. Rose hit .542 (13-for-24) with two home runs, nine runs scored and four RBI last week, recording at least one base hit in every game. She also led the team with an .875 slugging percentage and a .593 on-base percentage. Rose loves to see the calendar change from February to March. In 22 career games in the season’s opening month, Rose is hitting just .212 (14-for-66) for her career. After the first of March, Rose is a .373 hitter (106- Tanya for-284) in her career. Rose

MORE ON TANYA Rose reached several milestones and records during her torrid week at the plate. She notched her 50th career RBI, becoming the first SU player to reach that mark in the program’s five seasons. She is now the Orangewomen’s career leader with 53. Rose also went 6-for-8 in two games against the University of San Diego, tying the school record for hits in a doubleheader. Her two-run home run against Wisconsin in the final game of the week was the 13th of her career, moving her into a tie with teammate Alexis Switenko (Blue Anchor, N.J./Winslow Township) for first on SU’s career ledger.

VAN GORDEN ENTERS THE STARTING LINEUP Sophomore outfielder Lindsay Van Gorden (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) made her first career start in the second game of the doubleheader at the University of San Diego. Van Gorden responded, going 1-for-3 in the game. She also had a hit off the bench in the first game of the twin bill, going 1-for-2. For the season, Van Gorden has been primarily used as a pinch runner, scoring four runs in 14 games. She is 2-for-6 with a walk at the plate this season. Freshman designated player Ashley Ryan (San Diego, Calif./University of San Diego HS) made her first Lindsay career start in the tournament finale against Wisconsin. She recorded the first two Van Gorden hits of her career versus the Badgers.

TRIP TO DELAWARE UP NEXT The Orangewomen will finish their pre-conference schedule by participating in the Delaware State Capital Classic from March 19-21. SU will play Stony Brook, Delaware, Delaware State and Pennsylvania before beginning the bracket portion of the schedule on Sunday, March 21.

3 SCHULTZ PARTICIPATES IN 2004 NCAA ZONE “A” DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP For the second consecutive season, Dewey Schultz (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury H.S.) participated in the NCAA Zone “A” Diving Championship. This year’s event was held at the United States Naval Academy, March 12-13.

Schultz, a sophomore, placed 21st out of 27 divers in the men’s three-meter. He totaled a score of 241.05 points. Penn State’s Marc Gastaldo won the event with a score of 539.70 points. On the men’s one-meter board, Schultz was 25th out of 27 divers with a score of 198.55. He beat out Kevin Thompson of Connecticut and Thomas Crahan of Harvard. Pittsburgh’s Dennis Nemtsanow won the one- meter competition to advance to the NCAA Championship.

BORAL QUALIFIES FOR 2004 NCAA Dewey Schultz finished MEN’S SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP MEET 21st at the Zone “A” Diving Championship. Freshman Luk Boral (Poznan, Poland) is seeded 21st in the men’s 200 breaststroke for the upcoming NCAA Men’s Swimming Championship to be held March 25-27, 2004 at the Nassau County Aquatics Center in East Meadow, N.Y. Luk Boral qualified for the prestigious meet by setting a Boral BIG EAST record with a time of 1:59.30 at this year’s conference championship. He went on to improve that time to 1:58.57 at the Tar Heel Invitational on March 4. Djordje Filipovic was the last Orangeman to qualify for the NCAA Men’s Swimming Championship in 2001. Syracuse will be represented by senior Elyse McDonough (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) at the NCAA Women’s Championship, March 18-20 at Texas A&M University.

4 ORANGEWOMEN LOSE TO SOUTHERN ILLINOIS, 4-3 The Orangewomen lost to Southern Illinois, 4-3, in the first of three matches on their spring break trip to Orlando, Fla. Senior Trine Lise Juliussen (Rade, Norway/Treider vgs.) won her fourth consecutive No. 1 singles match, 6-4, 6- 4, and freshman Ashley Lipton (Saratoga, Calif./Menlo School) had continued success at the No. 2 singles spot, defeating Maria Blanco, 6-1, 6-3. Senior Marion Charlier (Rabat, Morocco/Riad Club) won SU’s thrid point at the No. 6 singles spot, defeating Kari Stark, 6-0, 6-1. The Orangewomen were also successful in one doubles match as Charlier and senior Jessica Schlosser (Nedrow, N.Y./ Christian Brothers Academy) defeated Zoya Honarmand and Zuzana Palovic, 9-7.

BOSTON UNIVERSITY BEATS SYRACUSE, 6-1 Senior Trine Lise Juliussen earned SU’s lone point in a 6-1 loss to Boston Trine Lise Juliussen has University, winning for the fifth consecutive posted wins in her last four No. 1 time at the No. 1 singles spot. Juliussen singles matches. defeated Lindsey Dynof 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5). In Wei-Ming doubles, Juliussen paired with sophomore Leong Wei-Ming Leong (Ipoh, Malaysia/SMJK Ave Maria Convent), but lost to Aimee Charest and Dynof, 8-4.

SPRING BREAK TRIP ENDS WITH LOSS TO AMERICAN defeated the Orangewomen, 4-3, in the final match of their three-match spring break trip.
