P. Ramlee's “Seniman Bujang Lapok”
Films as Social History — P. Ramlee’s “Seniman Bujang Lapok” and Malays in Singapore (1950s–60s) by Syed Muhd Khairudin Aljunied Department of Malay Studies, National University of Singapore is paper provides a critical “reading” and examination of P. Ramlee’s film, Seniman Bujang Lapok. Central to its argument is the appropriation of such a film as historical sources for the study of Malay society in the 1950s–60s Singapore. By contextualising P. Ramlee’s portrayal of Malay society within several key developments in his life and era, the article propounds some major themes that reflect the challenges and anxieties faced by Malays then. It is hoped that this article will induce scholars towards a rigorous interrogation of Malay films which are currently at the margins of Singapore’s historiography. Introduction espite their sheer importance in portraying the social conditions of Malays in post-World War II Singapore, Malay films of the 1950sD and 1960s are still in the margins of what is perceived as other important historical sources at that time. As Anthony Milner has observed, such negation is a product of the methods and sources Syed Muhd Khairudin Aljunied has completed his M.A. at the Department of History, National University of Singapore and will be pursuing his PhD at the School of Oriental and African Studies (S.O.A.S) at London. He was awarded the Wong Lin Ken Medal for Best esis (History) in 2001 and is currently a Teaching Staff at the Malay Studies Department, teaching modules on Malay Culture and Society. He was previously working as a General Education Officer with the Ministry of Education, Singapore. -

The bad and ugly image of the Islamic education is not in line with the noble, sublime and pristine goals of Islam and its education namely to inculcate the good and beneficial values in human minds and souls. Both human minds and spirits are important to be inculcated and trained with the good and beneficial values because good and useful conducts and actions originate from good, sound, healthy minds and souls. Evil and useless conducts and actions originate from evil and useless minds and souls. Hence both Islam and its education pay attention to human minds and souls with the hope of producing good and useful Muslims. For this good reason, all Muslims rely on their Islamic education for their children. They do not believe that the Islamic education should produce bad and evil Muslims who terrorize human beings since the Muslims themselves are human beings. -

The University of Sheffield Department of Educational Studies July 2006 Chapter Seven CHAPTER SEVEN A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION IN MALAYSIA. 7.1 Introduction. The aim of this chapter is to provide a critical analysis of Malaysian education in order to expose how Malaysian education undermines the aims and purpose of Islamic education. The question to be addressed in this chapter is whether the aims and values of Islamic education, the pedagogy it requires, and the kind of knowledge that it teaches can be pursued within the schooling system of contemporary Malaysian education. The question, therefore, concerns whether there is an incompatibility between the aims and aspiration of Islamic philosophy of education as described and analysed in the previous chapter, and the current Malaysian educational system. In order to achieve this, the chapter focuses on various views of curriculum and the different concepts of education they incorporate. To this end, the first section provides a conceptual framework for critically examining the curriculum, which draws on Habermas' theory of knowledge-constitutive interests (KCI), and, in particular, the way this is employed by Grundy (1987) to examine different kinds of curriculum policy, practice and pedagogy. In the second section, I employ the Habermasian idea of ideology- critique to examine the Malaysian curriculum and the view of education it sustains. The next section examines the question of whether the Malaysian curriculum undermines the aim and values of Islamic education. -

The author suggests that the Malaysian Indians’ struggle to correct the dominant reading of their community as an impoverished and humbled underclass is a disruption of the dominant cul- tural order in Malaysia. The struggle is also among the key events to have set in motion a set of dynamics—the visual turn—introduced by new media into the poli- tics of ethno-communal representation in Malaysia. Believing that this situation requires urgent examination the author attempts to outline the problematics of the task. RESEARCH PAPERS ALTERNATIVE ASSESSMENT IN MORAL EDUCATION IN MALAYSIA By VISHALACHE BALAKRISHNAN Faculty of Education, University of Malaya, Malaysia. ABSTRACT Moral feeling, moral thinking and moral acting are aspects in Moral Education for Malaysian schools. Students are encouraged to practice what they learn within and outside the boundaries of the class room. In the year 2000, there were shift in assessing teaching and learning of Moral Education in which equal weightage were given to the cognitive/moral thinking aspect, as well as moral feeling and moral acting. This has resulted in an assessment paper for Moral Education requirement focusing upon practical work students carry out, based on themes taught in the classroom. Policy makers together with Malaysian Examination Board produced a comprehensive syllabus and formative assessment sheets to assess students involvement in the implementation of the new system. Unfortunately, at this initial stage many flaws were found and policy makers need to reassess before it becomes “settled”, given serious backfire from teachers and students concerned. Jurnal Komunikasi Borneo 2014 vol 1 PENJENAMAAN RTM : Kajian Radio RTM Sabah Mahat Jamal Program Komunikasi, Sekolah Sains Sosial, Universiti Malaysia Sabah Penjenamaan Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) bertujuan untuk menampilkan imej dan pakej baru siaran dan program RTM supaya releven dalam perkembangan dunia penyiaran masa kini. Cabaran yang dihadapi oleh RTM tertumpuh kepada peranan dwifungsi utamanya iaitu tanggungjawab sebagai jabatan kerajaan di samping sebuah organisasi penyiaran yang perlu memenuhi citarasa audiens yang sentiasa berubah. Pelbagai usaha dilaksanakan bagi meningkatkan kefahaman audiens terhadap polisi dan dasar kerajaan disamping sajian hiburan yang sesuai kepaada masyarakat umum. Kertas ini membincangkan penjenamaan semula RTM secara besar-besaran pada 1 April 2005 dan kesannya terhadap pendengar radio di Sabah umumnya dan siaran radio RTM Sabah khususnya (Sabah fm, Sabah V fm, Sandakan fm dan Tawau fm) setelah 5 bulan dilaksanakan. Seramai 500 responden telah ditemuramah menggunakan kaedah borang soal selidik terhadap pendengar radio di Sabah termasuk radio RTM Sabah. Hasil kajian mendapati seramai 436 responden (87.2%) telah mendengar radio di Sabah. Daripada jumlah berkenaan sebanyak 44% responden sedar berlakunya penjenamaan semula radio RTM dengan majoritinya memberi penilaian tinggi terhadap pembaharuan nama saluran (88%) berbanding dengan nama program (42.2%) dan lagu pengenalan (39.3%). Seramai 92.7% responden bersetuju bahawa penjenamaan semula radio RTM dapat menarik minat pendengar untuk mengikuti radio -

Carruthers* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • After a tumultuous state election, Sabah is now the epicenter of an ongoing “Third Wave” of COVID-19 infections that has swept across Malaysia. • Election campaigning and clandestine cross-border movement have been causally linked by different government actors to this Third Wave, prompting the government to tighten movement control orders and migrant surveillance in Sabah. • As a recent report by the Sovereign Migrant Workers Coalition makes clear, migrant detention practices must be reformulated in response to evolving administrative, epidemiological, and ethical challenges. • Policymakers must grasp that (i) movement control, (ii) migrant care, and (iii) public health are interconnected. * Guest writer, Andrew M. This clash also created a new sense of place and function for the writer and his individual consciousness. From then on he/she sought to describe new scenarios and express his/her own perspectives and opinions with more confidence and conviction. Traditional literary formulae were slowly replaced with new and original lines and metaphors, while the verse and the narrative forms were loosened to allow the writer’s personality to be expressed.
