"'What is this worship to ָרָשע ָמה הּוא אֵֹומרָ?מה ָהֲעבָֹודה you?' (Exodus 12:26)" 'To you' and not 'to him.' And since הַ ּזאֹת לָ כֶם. לָ כֶם – ְולֹא לֹו.ְ ּולִפי he excluded himself from the collective, he denied a principle ֶשהֹוִציא ֶאת ַעְצמֹו ִמַן הְכָלָל כַפר of the Jewish faith]. And accordingly, you will blunt his teeth] ְבִעָקר. ְוַאף ַאָתַה הְקֵהה ֶאת ִשָניו [and say to him, "'For the sake of this, did the Lord do [this ֶוֱאמֹור לֹו: ַ"בֲעבֶּור זה ָעָשה ִה' לי 'for me in my going out of Egypt' (Exodus 13:8)." Maimonides’ Mishna Torah, Laws of Rebels 3:2-3 Once one has denied the oral Torah, push him ֵמַאַחר ֶשִנְתַפְרֵסם ֶשהּוא כֹוֵפַרבתָֹורה ֶשְבַעל ֶפה down and do not pull him up – for he has the ]מִֹוריִדין אֹותֹו[ ְולַֹאמֲעִלין הּוא ַוֲהֵרִיכְשָאָר כל same status as heretics and those who deny that ָהֶאִפיקֹורֹוִסין ְוָהְאֹומִרין ֵאין תָֹורה ִמַן הָשַמִים .divinity of Torah ְוַהמֹוְסִרין ְוַהמּו ָמִרין. ֶשָכל ֵאּלּו ֵאָינִם בְכַלל ִיְשָרֵאל ְוֵאיןָ צִריְך לְֹא לֵעִדים ְולֹא ַהְתָרָאה ְולֹאַדָיִנים: ?What are the circumstances of which we speak ַבֶמהְ דָבִרים ֲאמִּורְים בִאיש ֶשָכַפַרבתָֹורה ֶשְבַעל Of one who denies the Oral law both in ֶפְה בַמֲחַשְבתֹוִ ּובְדָבִרים ֶשִנְראּו לֹו. ְוָהַלְך ַאַחר principle and in practice and follows vanity and ַדְעת ַֹו הַקָּלה ְוַאַחר ְשִרירּותִ לבֹו ְוכֹוֵפַרבתָֹורה hedonistic pursuits and denies the origins of the ֶשְבַעל ֶפְה תִחָּלְה כָצדֹוקַ ּובְיתֹוס ְוֵכָן כַלהתֹוִעים Torah like Zadok and Boethus (famed heretics ַאֲחָריו. ֲאָבְל בֵנַי התֹוִעים ָהֵאֶּלהְ ּובֵני ְבֵנֶיהם who led others astray). But those who were ֶשִהִדיחּו ָאֹותם ֲאבָֹותם ְונְֹולדֵּו ביַןהָקָרִאים ְוִגְדלּו raised under such influences are like abducted אָֹותם ַעלַ דְעָתֲם.הֵרְי הּוא כִתינֹוק ֶשִנְשָבה children and should be encouraged to return to ֵביֵנֶיהם ְוִגְדלּוהּו ... ְלִפָיכְָך ראּוְילַהְחִזָירן ִבְתָשּובה the ways of the Torah. ְּולָמְשָכְם בִדְבֵרי ָשלֹום ַעד ֶשַיְחְזְרּו לֵאיָתַןהתָֹורה: 12. “The Four Sons” by Rabbi Amnon Bazak (accessed on Virtual Beit Midrash) The Yerushalmi presents a lengthier question posed by the wicked son, adding to the earlier texts the clause, "What is this trouble that you are forcing upon each and every year?" This question appears to address the exertion entailed in fulfilling the mitzvot each year, and likely reflects the Christian approach, which tended to undermine the importance of mitzva acts. If so, then we could perhaps suggest a novel explanation for the response given to the wicked son: "He did for me, and not for that person [oto ha-ish]. If that person had been in Egypt, he would have never been worthy to be redeemed from there." As we know, the term oto ha-ish often refers to the founder of Christianity. If this is the intent in this context, then the response "If that person had been in Egypt, he would never have been redeemed" takes on special significance. "That person" represents for his followers the redemption of the world, yet had he been in Egypt, he himself would never have earned redemption. Earlier we noted that the Haggada's response to the wicked son is surprisingly harsh and unsympathetic. According to what we have seen, we might suggest an explanation. The Haggada The Wicked One? ∙ Shabbat HaGadol 5779/2019 ∙ 4 speaks not of a son who simply ridicules Torah observance, but rather of a son who has rejected the Torah and joined a different faith.

But it would be a mistake to think the book is simply an argument for a Jewish state in the form of a novel. It is at least as much about the nature of England and the outlook for its future. Some English readers subordinated the importance of the Jewish sections of the novel to the story of English-born Gwendolen Harleth and the issues surrounding her maturation. In fact, Eliot interwove the two plots to demonstrate the interrelated fate of the Jews and the English. She believed that English attitudes toward the Jews reflected and determined the kind of nation England was to be. From her personal experience as a lapsed Christian, George Eliot recognized that modern forces were destabilizing society without necessarily showing citizens how to manage the transformation. If a superior novel can serve as guide to the perplexed, here we have a whole education in a single volume, exploring the strengths and vulnerabilities of English liberalism, the blessings and burdens of love, marriage, and family life, the influences of memory and identity, the manners and mores of a decaying aristocratic culture, and the spir- itual qualities needed for cultural renewal.

Shapiro My next post will take some time to prepare, but there are some other matters that I want to bring to readers’ attention, in particular a few books that I recently received. Due to space considerations, I couldn’t include these in my last post. 1. For those interested in the history of Lithuanian yeshivot, the last few years have been very fruitful. In 2014 Ben-Tsiyon Klibansky’s Ke-Tzur Halamish appeared. This book is a study of the yeshivot from World War I until the destruction of European Jewry. 2015 saw the appearance of Geoffrey D. Claussen’s Sharing the Burden: Rabbi Simhah Zissel Ziv and the Path of Mussar.[1]In January 2016 Shlomo Tikoshinski’s long- awaited book appeared. Its title isLamdanut, Musar ve- Elitizm: Yeshivat Slobodka me-Lita le-Eretz Yisrael. The book can be purchased here. Eliezer Brodt is also selling the book and a portion of each sale will go to support the efforts of the Seforim Blog, so I also encourage purchasing from him. This outstanding book is full of new information, and Tikoshinski had access to a variety of private archives and letters that help bring to life a world now lost. Lamdanut, Musar ve-Elitizm is also a crucial source in understanding the development of religious life in Eretz Yisrael in the two decades before the creation of the State. When you read about the Slobodka students, and later the students of Chevron, it is impossible not to see how very different the student culture was then from what is found today in haredi yeshivot, including the contemporary Yeshivat Chevron.

This interdisciplinary course explores the process through which art and artists make use of physical means to achieve spiritual or intangible ends; and the ways Judaism and Jewish sources deal with the tension between the physical and the spiritual, between external act and internal meaning, between the visual and the intellectual, the image and the idea. Course Structure In each section of the course, we will pair images, paintings, sculptures and architecture with readings from art history, philosophy and Jewish thought. We will begin by addressing the question of art in religion in general and in Judaism in particular; we will then turn to specific traditions, and utilizing both essays and objects within local museum collections, including Yeshiva University Museum, explore the tension and complex relationship between beauty and spirituality, between appreciating extraordinary aesthetic quality and fulfilling religious ideals.     Written by: Dina Michaels Editor: David Michaels Parshat Behar 5779 In the beginning of this week’s Parsha, the pasuk (Vayikra 25:1) states “Hashem spoke Secondly, why was Moshe calmed whenr he heard that the laws being taught, had to Moshe on the mountain of Sinai saying.” After this pasuk, the Torah explains the laws come from ‘Moshe at Sinai’? of Shemittah. Rashi asks, if all the mitzvos were given at Har Sinai, why does the Torah expressly state that the laws of Shemittah were given at Har Sinai?
