    JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL by LEE CAPLAN A Thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in Jazz History and Research written under the direction of Dr. Henry Martin and approved by ___________________________________ ___________________________________ Newark, New Jersey May,2017 ©2017 Lee Caplan ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL By LEE CAPLAN Thesis Director Dr. Henry Martin Jazz Education in Israel is indebted to three key figures – Zvi Keren, Arnie Lawrence, and Mel Keller. This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds.

His name can be found on the programs of the city’s hot spots for creative music such as the 55 Bar, Cornelia Street Café or CBGB’s Gallery. Sebastian Noelle’s performance experiences include concerts at the North Sea Festival, Montreux Festival, and tours in Holland and Slovakia. His melodic playing can be heard to advantage throughout his latest CD “Secret Sound Nation” (2004, Nolimit Records), which showcases original compositions exclusively. Among his former recordings are “Freedom Trail” (2001) featuring a quartet with former mentor John Abercrombie and “Home Is Where The Heart Wants To Go” (2001), an acoustic guitar album with duo partner Gene Bertoncini. After growing up in Germany in a musical family with a classical background, Sebastian became interested in the jazz traditions and the practice of improvised music. The curiosity for musical cultures from all over the world led him to New York, where his style was enriched by Middle Eastern, Asian and South American folk music. His steady group consists of Donny McCaslin or Chris Cheek on tenor saxophone, Ted Poor (Ben Monder Trio, Maria Schneider Orchestra) on drums, Thomson Kneeland (Matthias Lupri, Chris Potter, Mark Turner) and himself on guitar. As a sideman Sebastian Noelle has performed with JoAnne Brackeen, Lewis Nash, Mulgrew Miller, Bob Moses, Maria Schneider, Joel Frahm, Bobby Shew, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Dave Santoro, John Hollenbeck, Scott Reeves, Michael Abene and Tony Moreno. His original compositions also include works for big band, string quartets, solo guitar, voice, and small jazz ensembles and have been performed extensively in the U.S.

The performance is part of the Center’s Billy Taylor Jazz residency. Guitarist, vocalist, composer and bandleader Loueke is joined by his long-time collaborators, bassist Massimo Biolcati and drummer Ferenc Nemeth, onstage. Played in unison with his tongue-click percussion, scat-singing and other vocal improvisations, Loueke's highly syncopated, fresh approach to jazz guitar that JazzTimes has called "smartly formed, deftly executed and ear-friendly" has caught the ears of jazz stalwarts including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Terence Blanchard – all of whom have served as mentors to Loueke as well as collaborators in performance and in the studio. Named "Up & Coming Musician of the Year" in 2008 by the Jazz Journalists Association, Loueke opened for Hancock at Carnegie Hall the same year with his trio; the performance was hailed by the New York Times as full of "serpentine grooves" and of "engrossing intricacy and ambition." Loueke's musical journey began in hardship, evolved through tri-continental travel and tutelage under musical mainstays and ultimately earned him a spot on the roster of the most iconic jazz record label in the world.

He studied jazz composition at the Berklee College of Music and, while still a student, he performed with Jon Hendricks, Terence Blanchard, Slide Hampton, Claudio Roditi, and Paquito D’Rivera. Quickly established as a young master, he soon toured and/or recorded with artists such as the Dizzy Gillespie United Nations Orchestra, Jack DeJohnette, Steve Lacy, Lee Konitz, Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, Tito Puente, Wynton Marsalis, Tom Harrell, Gary Burton, and Roy Haynes. In 2000, he joined Wayne Shorter to form Shorter’s quartet with John Patitucci and Brian Blade and, since 2003, he has been touring with regular trio featuring Ben Street and Adam Cruz. In 1993, Pérez turned his focus to his own ensembles and recording projects, releasing eight albums as a leader, earning Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations. In 1996, he recorded Panamonk, a tribute to Thelonious Monk, which according to DownBeat magazine is one of the most important jazz piano albums in history. Pérez, who served as Goodwill Ambassador to UNICEF, has received a variety of awards for his musical achievements, activism, and social work efforts. He currently serves as UNESCO Artist for Peace, Cultural Ambassador to the Republic of Panama, Founder and Artistic Director of the Panama Jazz Festival, and Artistic Director of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute in Boston’s Berklee College of Music.

    PERSPECTIVES Angélique Kidjo Sofia Sanchez and Mauro Mongiello Sofia Sanchez and Mauro Three-time Grammy Award winner and Benin-born singer Angélique Kidjo brings her intoxicating blend of West African music, American R&B, jazz, and funk to her four-concert Perspectives series throughout Carnegie Hall’s 2019–2020 season. Ms. Kidjo’s Perspectives charts the journey of African music and its culture throughout the world. It launches in October with a program that features Benin International Musical, a fast-rising band that fuses hip-hop, pop, and electronica with traditional rhythms and sounds from Benin. The series continues in December with a concert dedicated to the powerful voices of the African diaspora from generation to generation and continent to continent, featuring notable singers from around the world. Also in December, Ms. Kidjo is honored by longtime friend and guitarist Lionel Loueke and his trio in a concert that both celebrates and reinvents many of her beloved songs. The series culminates in March with a special concert marking both Ms. Kidjo’s 60th birthday and the anniversary of independence for Benin and 16 other West African countries. Ms. Kidjo’s performances over the past two decades have thrilled audiences and left an indelible mark on the history of Carnegie Hall. In 2014, she closed Carnegie Hall’s UBUNTU festival with a tribute to singer and activist Miriam Makeba that inspired concertgoers—including Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu—to rise to their feet and sing along. In 2017, former Talking Heads lead singer David Byrne joined Ms. Kidjo on stage for her cover of the band’s hit “Once in a Lifetime” before she led a conga line that made its way throughout Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage.
