July 9, 2012

Dear Parents,

Thank you for giving your child or children the opportunity to participate in the 2012 Mayor & Council of New Castle’s Summer Recreation Program. The city officials and all of our staff members have been working hard to ensure that this year’s camp will provide many unique and exciting experiences for our campers. We look forward to this summer being the best yet for your children.

As the coordinator, I work with Mrs. Teel Petty, Liaison to Parks & Recreation, along with Cathryn C. Thomas, City Administrator and Marian C. Delaney, Finance/HR Manager. If you would like to share your comments about the program, please e-mail [email protected] or call 322-9812.

Please find all the necessary information and permission slips for camp in this booklet. Enclosed in this registration booklet you will find a packet that will explain the setup, rules and trips, as well as registration for the camp. Additionally, we have enclosed various permission slips with specific due dates for different trips. Please make sure that you have submitted the registration confirmation, and emergency contact forms by July 11th, 2012. All other permission slips can be turned in on or before their due dates. Also, please be advised that some trips require additional fees; make sure to turn in these fees along with the permission when it is due. Due to scheduling, permission slips for any trip or event CANNOT be taken after the due date. Please make payments at the City Administration building located at 220 Delaware Street. For the dates marked in the calendar as “TRIP” the Battery Park will be closed so please do NOT send your child or children to the park if they are not registered to go on those trips.

If you have multiple children attending camp, please make sure to complete information forms. Permissions slips can be completed for multiple children. Be sure to read over the information carefully. Attached in this packet is a “First Day Checklist” and a calendar with all your child/children’s activities and due dates for your convenience. Please keep this packet throughout the duration of the summer camp, as you will probably want to refer back to it often for information about the various trips we are taking and due dates for permission slips. It will also be made available to you through the city website at www.newcastlecity.org.

Having been a camp counselor and camper for a number of years I am delighted to work with the City of New Castle this summer and I look forward to a fun-filled, positive and extraordinary six weeks! Please do not hesitate to call me or email if you have any questions, comments or concerns regarding the program. I can’t wait to meet you all!

Sincerely,

Asiah Lemon

City of New Castle Parks & Recreation The summer camp program is designed for children ages 5 through 14 living within the limits of the City of New Castle. The program will run for six weeks, from July 9th-August 17th, 8 a.m. to noon on weekdays, with some trips returning later. Enclosed you will find all necessary forms and materials your child will need for the program. The Summer Program Coordinator is Asiah Lemon, who can be reached by phone at 302-339-5611 or by e-mail at [email protected]

Registration fee: $5* for each child participating. This price includes a camp T- which must be worn on trips where indicated. *This price does not include any individual trip costs.

Registration fees must be paid in full for trips, no exceptions. The number of persons per bus is limited to 48 (NO EXCEPTIONS). Therefore, reservations will be taken on a first- come, first-served basis.

General Information: Camp is headquartered at Battery Park with field trips departing from and returning to this location. This summer, we are also thankful to the Food Bank of Delaware, for letting us participate in their 2012 Summer Food Service Program and providing your child/children with a breakfast, and a lunch, free of charge.

Each day, drop-off and pick-up for the campers will occur on West 3rd Street at the parking lot on Battery Park next to the tennis courts. In case of inclement weather, please drop your children off at the New Castle Presbyterian Church, located at 25 East Second Street.

We will have rainy day activities for your children to participate in. Field Trips are rain or shine! If your child is scheduled to attend a field trip on a day it rains, please bring your child to the church and be prepared to pick up your child when the bus returns to the church.

For safety, your child will not be permitted to leave the park at any time during camp hours. If a child does need to leave prior to closing time, please send a notice in writing prior to that date. Please make sure to read the attached camp rules with your child. For safety, children are required to be signed-in upon arrival to camp each day and must be signed out by a parent or someone a parent has formally authorized. A parent must notify the Recreation Coordinator if anyone other than a parent is picking up a child. This is for your child’s safety and your peace of mind. A child may only sign him or herself out if a permission slip has been completed and returned stating that the child may walk or ride a bike home alone.

Camp Set-Up: This year’s campers will be able to enjoy a mixture of trips within walking distance and longer trips that require a bus ride. Also, we will be having some days at the park, which will include activities planned and run by the counselors under the direction of the Coordinator.

These activities include arts & crafts, sports, games and special events. Please make sure your children come to camp dressed in attire suitable for running around and having a great time. and loose clothing is a great choice for these activities. Please note the dates where we will be doing water activities, as your kids will need to wear their bathing underneath their clothing. Sunscreen is required before the kids arrive at camp.

Trips: There will be several trips throughout the six weeks of camp, including local tours. These local trips include Amstel and Dutch House, the Court House, and the Read House. These local trips are considered walking tours, and are marked with “ clip art” on the calendar.

If your child chooses not to participate in the local trips (Court House Tour, Read House, Dutch and Amstel House) please note that Battery Park will remain open with counselors staying to run activities for your child or children for the duration of the regular camp day.

NOTE: For the NONLOCAL trips, indicated as “TRIPS” in the calendar with a “bus clipart” there will be no counselors at Battery Park. On these days the trip bus will leave from the normal Battery Park location (3rd & South Streets) and parents are instructed NOT to send their children to the park if they are NOT registered for the trip.

Parents are welcome on many of the trips, so please feel free to indicate on the permission slip if interested. Parents pay their own way for any field trips that require it. Due to the fact that these trips require advanced notification, it is impossible to add attendees after the payment due date. Please read all booklet information. No refunds will be issued.

Fees for all trips can be paid before the due date by cash or check. Please provide exact amounts when paying cash. All (3) swimming trips, must be paid in cash, on or before the due date.

All fees and completed permission slips are collected at the City Administration Building located at 220 Delaware Street from 8:30am-4pm on TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS ONLY!

Trip fees can be either cash or check.

DELAWARE SWIM CLUB FEES MUST BE PAID IN CASH.

There is a lock box/door slot at 220 Delaware Street for after-hours use.

Page 21 of 28 JIG DOLL Permission Slip

Jig dolls are traditional wooden or tin-plate 'toys' for adults or children. They are dolls with loose limbs that step dance or 'jig' on the end of a vibrating board or platform in imitation of a real step dancer. These one of a kind dolls are between 20–30 cm tall and are jointed at arms, hips and knees; some also have ankle joints. They are usually three dimensional and carved or painted as a particular character – sailors being the most popular, and several soldiers and clowns have also been found.

Campers of all ages, boys and girls will enjoy painting and their very own dancing dolls. These dolls are over 100 years old and Irish imigrants brought the Jig Dolls to America. Today, they are and are known exclusivly for stepdancing, music making and entertaining people of all ages.
