A.A.K. Niazi of the Eastern Command was the man whose fate it was to direct the operation which resulted in the dismemberment of Pakistan. This book fills a huge gap in the recorded history of the period, which could hardly be considered complete or authentic without the contribution of such a major protagonist. 2021 356 pages Lt. Gen. The present ethnographic study is organized around three themes: piety, pilgrimage, and ritual. Subordinating development goals to its political and military imperatives, the colonial state co- operated with the dominant social classes, the members of which became the major beneficiaries of agricultural colonization. Even while the rulers tried to use the vast resources of the Punjab to advance imperial purposes, they were themselves being used by 2021 their collaborators to advance implacable private interests. Such 276 pages processes effectively retarded both nationalism and social Paperback 978-0-19-579924-8 change and resulted in the continued backwardness of the 216x138 mm region even after the departure of the British. Rs 595 Professor Imran Ali has obtained his Honours degree from the University of Sussex, and Doctorate from the Australian National University. Zulfi Bhutto of Pakistan His Life and Times Stanley Wolpert Bhutto was a charismatic and contradictory man. He climbed the heights of power with amazing swiftness, winning a seat in the central Cabinet of Pakistan at the unprecedented age of thirty. Wolpert weaves Pakistan’s turbulent politics and repeated wars with India together with Bhutto’s ambitious manoeuvring, tracing his rise as Foreign Minister, to the founding of his own political party, the PPP, and finally, leadership of the nation. The story of Bhutto’s sometimes 2021 inspiring and sometimes quixotic career is a fascinating one and 432 pages Wolpert tells it brilliantly through Bhutto’s triumphant years in Paperback the mid-1970s, the military coup in 1977, and his treacherous 978-0-19-070427-8 imprisonment and execution in 1979. 216x138 mm Rs 750 Stanley Wolpert (1927–2019) was Professor Emeritus of History at the University of California, Los Angeles. Pak. J. Chem. 5(3): 138-145, 2015 Full Paper ISSN (Print): 2220-2625 ISSN (Online): 2222-307X DOI: 10.15228/2015.v05.i03.p06 Assessment of Ground Water Quality at Selected Locations Inside Karachi City *S. M. S. Nadeem, S. Masood, B. Bano, Z. A. Pirzadaa, M. Ali *Department of Chemistry, University of Karachi, Pakistan. aDepartment of Microbiology, University of Karachi, Pakistan. E-mail: *[email protected] ABSTRACT The physico-chemical and microbiological water quality parameters of ground water samples from different locations inside Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town, Karachi were analyzed by standard methods of analysis. The drinking water quality parameters such as pH, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Electrical conductance (EC) and concentration of important minerals such as Calcium (Ca2+) 2+ + + - 2- Magnesium (Mg ), Sodium (Na ), Potassium (K ), Chloride (Cl ), and Sulphate (SO4 ) in ground water samples was determined and the experimental values were compared with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Pakistan Standard and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) standards to evaluate the feasibility of ground water samples to be used as drinking water. The physico-chemical parameters of 90% ground water samples were found to be in compliance with WHO and PSQCA drinking water quality standards whereas microbiological characteristics of 70% of ground water samples were found satisfactory enough to permit there use as potable water. Keywords: Gulshan-e-Iqbal; WHO; PSQCA; Total Dissolved Solids; Physico-chemical 1. INTRODUCTION Ground water is that water which perforates through the layers of soil and saturates the underground rocks and sediments. Ground water is one of our most vital natural resources as it can serve as a source of drinking water, for irrigation of crops and as domestic water for household use.

  • The 40Th Annual Conference on South Asia (2011)
2011 40th Annual Conference on South Asia Paper Abstracts Center for South Asia University of Wisconsin - Madison Aaftaab, Naheed Claiming Middle Class: Globalization, IT, and exclusionary practices in Hyderabad In this paper, I propose that middle class identity in the IT sector can be read as part of an “identity politics” that claim certain rights and benefits from governmental bodies both at the national and international levels. India’s economic growth since the 1991 liberalization has been attended by the growth of the middle classes through an increase in employment opportunities, such as those in the IT sector. The claims to middle class status are couched in narratives of professional affiliations that shape culturally significant components of middle class identities. The narratives rely on the ability of IT professionals to reconcile the political identities of nationalism while simultaneously belonging to a global work force. IT workers and the industry at large are symbols of India’s entry into the global scene, which, in turn, further reinforces the patriotic and nationalist rhetoric of “Indianness.” This global/national identity, however, exists through exclusionary practices that are evident in the IT sector despite the management’s assertions that the industry’s success is dependent on “merit based” employment practices. Using ethnographic data, I will examine middle class cultural and political claims as well as exclusionary practices in professional settings of the IT industry in order to explore the construction of new forms of identity politics in India. 40th Annual Conference on South Asia, 2011 1 Acharya, Anirban Right To (Sell In) The City: Neoliberalism and the Hawkers of Calcutta This paper explores the struggles of urban street vendors in India especially during the post liberalization era.
