Unlike many resident species that use shaded-coffee agroecosystems seasonally, RCWAs do not move to other habitats when migrants are present. RCWA foraging was compared when migrant birds were present (dry season) and absent (wet season). It was hypothesized that RCWAs would exhibit a seasonal foraging niche shift because of resource competition with migrants. Observations from both the canopy and coffee understorey show that RCWAs foraged almost equally in both vegetative layers during the wet season although they were more successful foraging in the canopy. In the dry season, migrants foraged primarily in the canopy and RCWAs shifted so that 80% of RCWA foraging manoeuvres were in the understorey. At that time RCWAs foraged less successfully in both vegetative layers. Avian predation in the dry season was found to reduce densities of arthropods by 47–79% in the canopy, as opposed to 4–5% in the understorey. In the canopy, availability of large (>5 mm in length) arthropods decreased by 58% from the wet to dry season. Such resource reductions could have caused the RCWA foraging niche shift yet other alternative or additional hypotheses are discussed. Shifts in foraging niche may be a widespread mechanism for some small insectivorous residents to avoid seasonal competition with abundant migrant species. Resumen: Este estudio examino´ el comportamiento de forrajeo de un ave residente, Basileuterus rufifrons (RCWA), en una finca de cafe´ con sombra en Chiapas, Mexico.´ A diferencia de muchas aves residentes que usan los agroecosistemas de cafe´ con sombra solamante durante una estacion,´ RCWAs no se van a otros habitats´ cuando los aves migrantes estan´ presente. El forrajeo de RCWA fue comparado cuando las aves migrantes eran presente (la epoca´ seca) y ausente (la epoca´ de lluvia). La hipotesis´ fue que los RCWA exhibir´ıan un cambio de forrajeo con los cambios de estaciones a causa de la competencia de recursos con los migrantes. Observaciones en el docel y el sotobosque en un cafetal muestran que durante la epoca´ de lluvia, los RCWAs forrajean igualmente en los dos niveles de vegetacion,´ pero tienen mas´ exito´ forrajeando en el docel. Rollins Rd., Tucson, AZ 85739, [email protected] ABSTRACT: The Tropical Kingbird (Tyrannus melancholicus), a widely distributed tyrant flycatcher in the Americas, breeds in the United States in southern Arizona and southern and western Texas (Stouffer and Chesser 1998, Brush 2005). Its breeding range in Arizona has been increasing over the past several decades (Corman 2005, Jenness 2015). The most favored breeding site for Tropical Kingbirds in Arizona is the tops of larger Fremont cottonwoods (Populus fremontii), often near bodies of water (Phillips et al. 1964, Monson and Phillips 1981, Corman 2005). It also has been reported nesting in pecan trees (Carya illinoinensis), particularly rows of trees along roadsides in agricultural areas (Corman 2005, Jenness 2015), and at least once each in athel tamarisk (Tamarix aphylla) (Corman 2005) and Chinese elm (Ulmus parvifolia) in 2014 at Willcox (eBird 2012). Throughout its extensive range this species favors locations with open edges by ponds, rivers, fields, golf courses, etc. Within this context, it utilizes a wide range of nesting sites. In Texas, for example, in addition to cottonwood, Washingtonian palm (Washingtonia robusta), Texas ebony (Pithecellobium ebano), and other tall trees, it is known to construct its nest in artificial structures such as power poles, electric substations, and football stadiums (Stouffer and Chesser 1998, Brush 2005). In Sonora, the Mexican state south of Arizona, it frequently nests in mangroves (Rhizophora sp.) in coastal areas and in cottonwoods along riparian belts farther north (Russell and Monson 1998).

    Tropical Birding Trip Report Costa Rica: The Introtour | July 2017 A Tropical Birding SET DEPARTURE tour Costa Rica: The Introtour July 15 – 25, 2017 Tour Leader: Scott Olmstead INTRODUCTION This year’s July departure of the Costa Rica Introtour had great luck with many of the most spectacular, emblematic birds of Central America like Resplendent Quetzal (photo right), Three-wattled Bellbird, Great Green and Scarlet Macaws, and Keel-billed Toucan, as well as some excellent rarities like Black Hawk- Eagle, Ochraceous Pewee and Azure-hooded Jay. We enjoyed great weather for birding, with almost no morning rain throughout the trip, and just a few delightful afternoon and evening showers. Comfortable accommodations, iconic landscapes, abundant, delicious meals, and our charismatic driver Luís enhanced our time in the field. Our group, made up of a mix of first- timers to the tropics and more seasoned tropical birders, got along wonderfully, with some spying their first-ever toucans, motmots, puffbirds, etc. on this trip, and others ticking off regional endemics and hard-to-get species. We were fortunate to have several high-quality mammal sightings, including three monkey species, Derby’s Wooly Opossum, Northern Tamandua, and Tayra. Having arrived in Barranquilla earlier than expected, we wasted no time and headed out to the nearby Universidad del Norte – one of the best places to open our Endemics account. It took only a few minutes to find Chestnut- winged Chachalaca, and only a few more to obtain excellent views of a number of these typically localised birds. A fabulous welcome meal was then had on the 26th floor of our city skyscraper hotel! An early start the next day saw us leaving the city of Barranquilla for the nearby scrub of Caño Clarín. Our account opened quickly with a female Sapphire-throated Hummingbird followed by many Russet-throated Puffbirds. A Chestnut-winged Chachalaca by Clayton Burne White-tailed Nightjar was the surprise find of the morning. We added a number of typical species for the area including Caribbean Hornero, Scaled Dove, Green-and-rufous, Green and Ringed Kingfishers, Red-crowned, Red-rumped and Spot-breasted Woodpeckers, Stripe-backed and Bicolored Wrens, as well as Black-crested Antshrike. Having cleared up the common stuff, we headed off to Isla de Salamanca, a mangrove reserve that plays host to another very scarce endemic, the Sapphire-bellied Hummingbird. More good luck meant that the very first bird we saw after climbing out of the vehicle was the targeted bird itself.

STU WILSON Sarasota, Florida Email: [email protected] INTRODUCTION In the spring of 2016, two observers at two widely separated locations studied and photographed what appeared to be Gray Kingbirds (T. dominicensis) that had a highly unusual extensive yellow wash on the underparts. On 5 April 2016, experienced Florida birder Carl Goodrich (pers. comm.) noted an odd-looking kingbird on a wire in the company of two Gray Kingbirds at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park (“Fort Zach”) at Key West, Monroe County, Florida. In his first view, without a binocular, the bird struck him as a Western Kingbird (T. verticalis) because of the yellow on the underparts. Later the same day, when he was able to photograph the bird and study it in more detail with a binocular, he realized it was not a Western Kingbird. Goodrich has seen “thousands of Gray Kingbirds in the Keys over the last 40 years and none were as yellow as this one” (Fig. 1A). He believes he saw the same bird a week earlier in a gumbo limbo (Bursera simaruba) at the same location in the company of a dozen Gray Kingbirds, but was not able to photograph it on that occasion. On 15 May 2016, Michelle Wilson (pers. comm.) was birding on Lust Road at Lake Apopka North Shore Restoration Area (LANSRA), Orange County, Florida, part of the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive.
