Navigating the Murky Waters: A Guide to Making Sense of Vocal Jazz Ensemble Charts Andrew N. Dahan [email protected] University of Miami Frost School of Music FMEA 2014 Professional Development Conference January 9, 2014 2:45 pm A Brief History of Vocal Jazz As jazz has evolved in our country, many vocalists have contributed to the art form. Many of us already know that singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday (to name a few) brought different ideas and styles to their performances, which in turn made them stand out in the jazz world. What many people may not know is Louis Armstrong is considered to be the person responsible for establishing singing as a part of the jazz scene. He also is the person responsible for setting the precedent that vocalists take a more “instrumental” approach when singing jazz. The post-war era brought the emergence of the jazz ensemble, or big band. Vocalists were often featured with these bands and shortly thereafter, small vocal jazz ensembles like Lambert Hendricks & Ross began to surface. By the 70’s, many small ensembles including the Singers Unlimited and the Manhattan Transfer really had established notoriety in the jazz world, and groups such as the New York Voices, The Real Group, and Vertical Voices continue the tradition today. The first school-affiliated vocal jazz ensembles as we know them today began in Community Colleges in the Pacific Northwest. Since music often wasn’t available for that type of ensemble, they sang actual jazz band charts that had been rearranged for singers.

A COMPILTION OF AFRICAN AMERICANS AND HISTORIC SITES IN THE TOWN OF HUNTINGTON Presented by THE AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORIC DESIGNATION COUNCIL (AAHDC) John William Coltrane On Candlewood Path in Dix Hills, New York. obscured among overgrown trees, sits the home of jazz legend John Coltrane, a worldwide jazz icon. Born on September 23, 1920, in Hamlet, North Carolina, Coltrane followed in the foot steps of his father who played several instruments. He learned music at an early age, influenced by Lester Young and Johnny Hodges and others which led him to shi to the alto saxophone. He connued his musical training in Philadelphia and was called to military service during World War II, where he performed in the U.S. Navy Band. Aer the war, Coltrane connued his zest for music, playing the tenor saxophone with the Eddie Vinson Band, performing with Jimmy Heath. He later joined the Dizzy Gillespie Band. His passion for experimentaon was be- ginning to take shape; however, it was his work with the Miles Davis Quintet in 1958 that would lead to his own musical evoluon. He was impressed with the freedom given to him by Miles Davis' music and was quoted as say- ing "Miles' music gave me plenty of freedom." This freedom led him to form his own band. By 1960, Coltrane had formed his own quartet, which included pianist McCoy Tyner, drummer Elvin Jones, and bassist Jimmy Garrison. He eventually added other players including Eric Dolphy and Pharaoh Sanders. The John Coltrane Quartet, a novelty group, created some of the most innovave and expressive music in jazz histo- ry, including hit albums: "My Favorite Things," "Africa Brass," "Impressions," and his most famous piece, "A Love Supreme." "A Love Supreme," composed in his home on Candlewood Path, not only effected posive change in North America, but helped to change people's percepon of African Americans throughout the world.

  • Groove Me New Jack Swing Feel
GROOVE ME NEW JACK SWING FEEL Original Recording Profile Recording Artist: Guy Drummer: drum machine Original Album: Guy Record Label: MCA Recording Date: 1988 Recorded at various studios throughout the New York and New Jersey area Historical Overview This tune set a new precedent when it first hit the airwaves in 1988. It featured this ridiculously funky and utterly infectious groove. The drum beat itself was the main attraction of the song and was deceivingly not as simple as it sounded. This song was produced by Teddy Riley, a pioneer and innovator of a new sound that was dubbed new jack swing. New jack swing was a style of R&B music that combined ol’ skool soul vocals and harmonies with rap interludes to bring about a fusion of old and new music. It had the swing factor of jazz music with the fat backbeat associated with funk. The swingy feeling was most often felt in the arena of the drum machine-programmed percussion, bass drum, and hi-hat parts. In essence, the music was swing funk with modern production and recording techniques that made use of one of its newest tools, the drum machine. Because many of the people that were programming the machines were not drummers themselves, they didn’t consider whether any of us mere humans could play the groove in a live situation when called upon to do so later. This put incredible new demands on drummers that were sometimes a bit overwhelming. But if you were willing to stretch the limits of your playing and get out of your comfort zone, this era was a great opportunity to experience new growth.
