Carabid Beetles Collected from Vegetable Ecosystem
Journal of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry 2018; 7(6): 1581-1590 E-ISSN: 2278-4136 P-ISSN: 2349-8234 JPP 2018; 7(6): 1581-1590 Carabid beetles collected from vegetable Received: 16-09-2018 Accepted: 18-10-2018 ecosystem Phunu Mili Department of Entomology, Phunu Mili, Anjumoni Devee and Dilip Kumar Saikia Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, Assam, India Abstract The work on 'Carabid complex of horticultural orchards' was conducted in the Experimental Farm, Anjumoni Devee Department of Horticulture, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat-13, during the year 2014-2015 and Department of Entomology, Assam Agricultural University, 2015-16 to give a comprehensive information of carabids found in horticultural crops. Carabids were Jorhat, Assam, India collected by pitfall trap, light trap, sweep net and hand picking from okra, brinjal, cabbage, cucumber and bean. Total 12 species of carabids belonging to 7 genera viz., Clivina, Scarites, Harpalus, Pherosophus, Dilip Kumar Saikia Pterostichus, Chlaenius, and Sparostes under 6 tribes- Clivinini, Scaritini, Harpalini, Brachinini, Department of Entomology, Pterostichini and Chlaeniini and 5 subfamily (Scaritinae, Harpalinae, Brachininae, Pterostichinae and Assam Agricultural University, Licininae) were identified by following published Keys and literature and described on the basis of Jorhat, Assam, India observed morphological characters. Among these species, 3 under Clivina viz., C. assamensis, C. memnonia, C. lobata and 2 under Scarites, Harpalus and Pherosophus each viz., S. indus, S. inconspicuous, H. rufipes, H. calceatus, P. occipitalis and Pherosophus sp. From Pterostichus, Chlaenius and Sparostes, there was one species of each genus viz., Pterostichus madidus, C. bimaculatus and Sparostes striatulus. Highest collection of carabids were obtained from pitfall trap (46%) followed by light trap (42%). -

Sem qualquer pretensão de esgotar um assunto tão vasto, um dos objetivos principais deste guia básico de identificação é apresentar e caracterizar esse grande grupo taxonômico de maneira didática e objetiva. Este guia de identificação foi elaborado para auxiliar os técnicos e profissionais de várias áreas de conhecimento nos trabalhos de campo e nas vistorias técnicas realizadas pelo Ibama. É preciso esclarecer que este guia não pretende formar “especialista”, mesmo porque para tanto seriam necessários muitos anos de dedicação e aprendizado contínuo. Longe desse intuito, pretende- se apenas que este trabalho sirva para despertar o interesse quanto à conservação dos invertebrados de cavernas (meio hipógeo) e também daqueles que vivem no ambiente externo (meio epígeo). -

Peck Department of Biology, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, Ontario K1S 5B6, Canada stewart_peck@carleton. ca Abstract. The beetle fauna of the island of Dominica is summarized. It is presently known to contain 269 genera, and 361 species (in 42 families), of which 347 are named at a species level. Of these, 62 species are endemic to the island. The other naturally occurring species number 262, and another 23 species are of such wide distribution that they have probably been accidentally introduced and distributed, at least in part, by human activities. Undoubtedly, the actual numbers of species on Dominica are many times higher than now reported. This highlights the poor level of knowledge of the beetles of Dominica and the Lesser Antilles in general. Of the species known to occur elsewhere, the largest numbers are shared with neighboring Guadeloupe (201), and then with South America (126), Puerto Rico (113), Cuba (107), and Mexico-Central America (108). The Antillean island chain probably represents the main avenue of natural overwater dispersal via intermediate stepping-stone islands. The distributional patterns of the species shared with Dominica and elsewhere in the Caribbean suggest stages in a dynamic taxon cycle of species origin, range expansion, distribution contraction, and re-speciation. RESULTADOS PRELIMINARES A. C. Cicchino RESUMEN Este talar está ubicado en el margen oriental de la laguna homónima (37º35’ LS, 57º84’ LW). Presenta gran interés faunístico debido a su asociación con la citada laguna, la cual posee antecedentes geomorfológicos propios. Por ello se efectuó un estudio entomológico iniciado en el año 2000 y que continua hoy.. Una parte se centró en la carabidocenosis edáfica, estudiada mediante trampas pitfall. Esta carabidocenosis está integrada por 78 especies distribuidas en 36 géneros y 16 tribus (el primer guarismo indica el nº de géneros, y el segundo el nº de especies): Carabini 1, 1; Scaritini 1, 2; Clivinini 2 ,4; Brachinini 1,7; Bembidiini 3, 5; Pterostichini 8, 21; Platynini 1 ,5; Panagaeini 1, 1; Oodini 1, 2; Callistini 1, 3; Harpalini 9, 19; Lebiini 3, 3: Migadopini 1, 1; Lachnophorini 1, 1; Galeritini 1, 2.; Megacephalini 1, 1. Se análiza la riqueza específica de este talar, agrupando las especies por afinidad de hábitats, y se dan algunos comentarios faunísticos relevantes Por último, se destaca este sitio como refugio local de especies deCarabidae, ya que alberga el 53,4% de riqueza carabidológica conocidas el sudeste de la provincia de Buenos Aires (146 sp.), y el 22,5% del total conocido al presente para dicha provincia (346 sp.). -

(both from Bioko, Equatorial Guinea), as well as Antireicheia calais sp. nov. and A. zetes sp. nov. (both from the South Pare Mountains, Tanzania). We generate and report all currently available DNA barcode (= cytochrome oxidase subunit I) data for euedaphic Afromontane Clivinini of the genera Trilophidius (2 species, four records) and Antireicheia (13 species, 43 records). We infer a phylogeny for these beetles using a Maximum Likelihood approach based upon a matrix of 53 sequenced speci- mens (dx.doi.org/10.5883/DS-ANTIREI) with 658 aligned positions. All nominative species represented by two or more sequences are recovered as monophyletic. Both new species of Trilophidius form a weakly supported clade, while all seven species of South African Antireicheia form a moderately supported clade. -
From Characters of the Female Reproductive Tract
Phylogeny and Classification of Caraboidea Mus. reg. Sci. nat. Torino, 1998: XX LCE. (1996, Firenze, Italy) 107-170 James K. LIEBHERR and Kipling W. WILL* Inferring phylogenetic relationships within Carabidae (Insecta, Coleoptera) from characters of the female reproductive tract ABSTRACT Characters of the female reproductive tract, ovipositor, and abdomen are analyzed using cladi stic parsimony for a comprehensive representation of carabid beetle tribes. The resulting cladogram is rooted at the family Trachypachidae. No characters of the female reproductive tract define the Carabidae as monophyletic. The Carabidac exhibit a fundamental dichotomy, with the isochaete tri bes Metriini and Paussini forming the adelphotaxon to the Anisochaeta, which includes Gehringiini and Rhysodini, along with the other groups considered member taxa in Jeannel's classification. Monophyly of Isochaeta is supported by the groundplan presence of a securiform helminthoid scle rite at the spermathecal base, and a rod-like, elongate laterotergite IX leading to the explosion cham ber of the pygidial defense glands. Monophyly of the Anisochaeta is supported by the derived divi sion of gonocoxa IX into a basal and apical portion. Within Anisochaeta, the evolution of a secon dary spermatheca-2, and loss ofthe primary spermathcca-I has occurred in one lineage including the Gehringiini, Notiokasiini, Elaphrini, Nebriini, Opisthiini, Notiophilini, and Omophronini. This evo lutionary replacement is demonstrated by the possession of both spermatheca-like structures in Gehringia olympica Darlington and Omophron variegatum (Olivier). The adelphotaxon to this sper matheca-2 clade comprises a basal rhysodine grade consisting of Clivinini, Promecognathini, Amarotypini, Apotomini, Melaenini, Cymbionotini, and Rhysodini. The Rhysodini and Clivinini both exhibit a highly modified laterotergite IX; long and thin, with or without a clavate lateral region. -

Subsequently, specific taxa are often chosen as indicators of patterns of diversity as a whole. Mapping the locations of indicator taxa can inform conservation planning by identifying land units for management strategies. For this approach to be successful, though, land units must be effective spatial representations of the species assemblages present on the landscape. In this study, I determined whether land units classified by vegetative communities predicted the community structure of a diverse group of invertebrates—the ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae). Specifically, that (1) land units of the same classification contained similar carabid species assemblages and that (2) differences in species structure were correlated with variation in land unit characteristics, including canopy and ground cover, vegetation structure, tree density, leaf litter depth, and soil moisture. The study site, the Braidwood Dunes and Savanna Nature Preserve in Will County, Illinois is a mosaic of differing land units. Beetles were sampled continuously via pitfall trapping across an entire active season from 2011–2012. Land unit characteristics were measured in July 2012. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordinated the land units by their carabid assemblages into five ecologically meaningful clusters: disturbed, marsh, prairie, restoration, and savanna. -

Biological invasions are usually thought to have a negative impact on native communities. However, data supporting this idea are often based on comparative studies between invaded and non-invaded areas, and are spatially and temporally limited. 2. The present study experimentally assessed the impact of an exotic wasp, Vespula germanica , on the native arthropod community of north-west Patagonia during 3 years in an area of 80 ha. Vespula germanica is an exotic social vespid that invaded north-west Patagonia 20 years ago. It has been suggested that its populations affect native arthropods because of its broad diet and also because Patagonia lacks natural enemies and potential competitors for these wasps. 3. Using wasp-specific toxic baits, V. germanica abundance was reduced in five sites of native woodlands during 3 consecutive years. The abundance, species richness, and composition of arthropods between non-poisoned (control) and poisoned sites was then compared, both before and after the wasps were poisoned. 4. Wasp abundance represented 6% of the total arthropod catches in non-poisoned sites and was reduced, on average, by 50% in the treated areas. -

Abstract: The role of carabid beetles in reducing populations of phytophagous insects has been an elusive subject. A field experiment was established on a commercial wheat crop (cv. Otto) with an area of 4.5 ha in Valdivia, Chile, during the spring and summer of 1996-1997. The field had been under a prairie system for two years, before wheat sowing (fertilization and a pesticide had been applied during crop development). Samples were taken at approxi- mately monthly intervals. Carabid beetles were sampled with a grid of pitfall traps and other insects were sampled with a vacuum insect net and soil cores. The genera of the carabids found are of neotropical origin. Exclusion by polythene barriers, together with removal of carabid beetles using traps, was an effective technique for controlling carabid populations in a commercial wheat crop. A reduction in the number of carabid beetles was associated with an increase in the number of springtails and arachnids, and a decrease of agromyzid adults. Phytophagous insects, such as homopterans and lepidopterous larvae, were not affected by carabid exclusion and removal. The action of carabid beetles on the arthropod fauna can be extremely complex, due to its predatory activity at multitrophic levels.
