Drawn entirely from 8,901 IN ATTENDANCE these holdings, this elegant exhibition featured nearly 80 paintings, sculptures, prints, and photographs by American artists DURING EXHIBITION such as Timothy O’Sullivan and William Bell, James McNeill Whistler, George Inness, and Walker Evans. With a nod to the one hundredth anniversary of the 1913 Armory Show, the landmark exhibition that introduced the United States to modern art, The Land Beneath Our Feet explored themes of American space and place between 1850 and 1945—from the windy 448 walkways of the World’s Columbian Exposition to quiet rural retreats, from bustling urban cityscapes to the rugged wilds of RELATED PROGRAM Arizona. Strolling through the galleries, guests discovered artists who engaged with questions of place and reflected in their ATTENDANCE work the profound changes in our understandings of “American-ness” that could be traced over nearly a century. 4 SMART MUSEUM OF ART 2013-2014 BULLETIN EXHIBITIONS & SPECIAL PROJECTS PROGRAMMING COLLECTION SUPPORT STAFF & LEADERSHIP OPERATIONS EXHIBITIONS The Land Beneath Our Feet: American Art at the Smart Museum SPOTLIGHT Each year, the Smart Museum employs UChicago undergraduate and graduate students as paid interns, docents, and attendants. This opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the Museum’s work broadens the overall quality of a student’s education and helps build a foundation for their continued engagement with the visual arts. For The Land Beneath Our Feet, Carl Fuldner, an art history graduate student studying American art and photography, provided research assistance, while postdoctoral fellow Sarah Miller—who taught an American art course using the Museum’s collection in spring 2012—served as a project consultant. Rachel Kyne, a Smart Museum curatorial intern, also contributed research assistance: as a graduate student in English literature, she was especially alert to literary connections, such as those between Walker Evans and James Agee. According to Anne Leonard, these “graduate students and postdocs bring the freshness of their UChicago studies to their work for the Museum. We continue to welcome about 50,000 visitors annually to the Oriental Institute to introduce them to the history, written traditions, and art of the ancient cultures of the Middle East. We generate widespread publicity and interest in the Oriental Institute at the same time as we work to improve access to our amazing collection. The Museum also contributes in many ways to the financial support of the Institute, through donations at the front desk, sales in the Suq, a wide range of grants, and by serving as a venue for a variety of events. As you will see in the sections that follow, our special exhibits, education programs, and docent tours have had great success this past year, and we have taken some significant steps in publicity and marketing that we hope will lead to greater attendance in the future. Our collections staff has also made numerous improvements to cataloging and storage that enhanced our ability to facilitate use of the collection for research, teaching, and exhibits. As usual, the successes of the Museum are inevitably joint projects relying on cooperation of many staff members, and I would like to express my thanks to everyone who has made it such a pleasure to work in the Oriental Institute over the past year.

Whether painting or poetry, film or theater, music or dance, artistic creation addresses the deepest questions of the human condition. A great research university should nurture the unique and powerful role of the arts in the education of the whole person. University President Ernest DeWitt Burton recognized this when he wrote in 1925: “We need to supplement science and the scientific study of all branches of knowledge with the finer arts of music and painting, of sculpture and architecture. We owe it to our students, to whom it is our ambition to give the best possible education. We owe it to our professors, that they not become dry-as- dust investigators and lecturers but symmetrically developed and cultivated personalities. We owe it to our community.” Today, more students, faculty, staff, and general audiences engage with the arts on our campus than ever before. This increased participation has been paralleled by growth in the quality and diversity of our arts programs and activities.

    The Fine Art Trade Guild Standards for Mountboard (Mat Board) and other boards used in framing. Amended 10th June 2004 Copyright C Sumner, Fine Art Trade Guild Introduction These standards are directed to the composition, combinations, and characteristics of papers and paper-boards used in the framing of artwork, keepsakes and memorabilia. They help to give material categorisation of these to fit into the five levels of framing specified by the Fine Art Trade Guild. The objective of each level of framing is stated, with examples of the kinds of things for which that level is suitable. At present, all board that does not meet either the Cotton Museum Board standard or the Conservation Board standard will be deemed to be Standard Board and suitable for Commended, Budget and Minimum levels of framing only. The specifications for Standard Board may be further refined in due course as the quality of boards in this category vary greatly. Conservation Board is deemed to be acceptable for all levels except Museum level framing. Museum Board is deemed to be acceptable for all levels of framing. It is a prerequisite that the type of surface and texture must be specified relating to any board purporting to meet Guild Standards. If the surface is designed to accept decoration and embellishments, as in the case of Mountboard unless otherwise stipulated, it should be fit for the purpose. (FACTS Institute, USA, Test No. 6-97).
