Historical Development of the Distinction between Bio- and Abiogenesis. Robert B. Sheldon NASA/MSFC/NSSTC, 320 Sparkman Dr, Huntsville, AL, USA ABSTRACT Early greek philosophers laid the philosophical foundations of the distinction between bio and abiogenesis, when they debated organic and non-organic explanations for natural phenomena. Plato and Aristotle gave organic, or purpose-driven explanations for physical phenomena, whereas the materialist school of Democritus and Epicurus gave non-organic, or materialist explanations. These competing schools have alternated in popularity through history, with the present era dominated by epicurean schools of thought. Present controversies concerning evidence for exobiology and biogenesis have many aspects which reflect this millennial debate. Therefore this paper traces a selected history of this debate with some modern, 20th century developments due to quantum mechanics. It ¯nishes with an application of quantum information theory to several exobiology debates. Keywords: Biogenesis, Abiogenesis, Aristotle, Epicurus, Materialism, Information Theory 1. INTRODUCTION & ANCIENT HISTORY 1.1. Plato and Aristotle Both Plato and Aristotle believed that purpose was an essential ingredient in any scienti¯c explanation, or teleology in philosophical nomenclature. Therefore all explanations, said Aristotle, answer four basic questions: what is it made of, what does it represent, who made it, and why was it made, which have the nomenclature material, formal, e±cient and ¯nal causes.1 This aristotelean framework shaped the terms of the scienti¯c enquiry, invisibly directing greek science for over 500 years. For example, \organic" or \¯nal" causes were often deemed su±cient to explain natural phenomena, so that a rock fell when released from rest because it \desired" its own kind, the earth, over unlike elements such as air, water or ¯re. -

Twenty-two Thoughts on Deep Value Investing By J. Ellwood Towle July 2018 Deep value investing is expressed in various ways. In this commentary, deep value investing represents the learnings and insights gained during my nearly four decades as an investment professional. Other investors will likely have differing views. 1. Deep value investing is predicated on two fundamental beliefs: trusting in the goodness and decency of mankind and recognizing that economic progress is on- going, inevitable. 2. Deep value has been enlightened through the ideas and actions of Warren Buffett, Benjamin Graham, and John Templeton. Deep value investing is a timeless capital creating strategy. 3. Effective deep value investing takes time, likely many decades. Benefits will occur to those who compound their capital at meaningful rates of return. Patience and perseverance are key ingredients in this long term, capital creating journey. 4. By nature, deep value is more volatile than most long only, public equity strategies. At times, it will produce disappointing, short term results in an investment world that desires predictable and improving short term performance. However, it is the cyclicality and volatility of deep value that creates investment opportunity. 5. Knowing when to buy or sell is the “art” of deep value. Contrarian thought is a necessity. John Templeton says it best, “To buy when others are despondently selling and to sell when others are greedily buying requires the greatest fortitude, even while offering the greatest reward.” (Doubleday & Company 1983) 6. The gathering of the data is the “science” of deep value. Fact finding may require research and contacts beyond published data and readily available information. -

Selfish Genes, Selfish Organisms, and Survival of the Fittest If one compares the general worldview of biology with that of theology, it first seems that there is only stark contrast. To move from Darwinian na- ture to Christian theology, one will have to change the sign of natural his- tory, from selfish genes to suffering love. Theologians also hold that, in regeneration, humans with their sinful natures must be reformed to lives that are more altruistic, also requiring a change of sign. But the problem lies deeper; all of biological nature can seem to run counter to what Jesus teaches: that one ought to lay down one s life for others. In biology we find, at once and pervasively, the organism as a bounded somatic "self" — something quite unknown in physics, chemis- try, astronomy, meteorology, or geology. Rees Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge, Cambridge CB3 0HA, UK E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The physical processes that determine the properties of our everyday world, and of the wider cosmos, are determined by some key numbers: the ‘constants’ of micro-physics and the parameters that describe the expanding universe in which we have emerged. We identify various steps in the emergence of stars, planets and life that are dependent on these fundamental numbers, and explore how these steps might have been changed — or completely prevented — if the numbers were different. We then outline some cosmological models where physical reality is vastly more extensive than the ‘universe’ that astronomers observe (perhaps even involving many ‘big bangs’) — which could perhaps encompass domains governed by different physics. Although the concept of a multiverse is still speculative, we argue that attempts to determine whether it exists constitute a genuinely scientific endeavor. WINTER 2014 Vol. 11, No. 2 Remembering Ian Barbour: Mentor, Colleague, Friend and Founder of Carleton’s Religion Department as Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama. He donated most of the money to support the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. His broadly celebrated book, When Science Meets Religion: Enemies, Strangers, or Partners? (2000) synthesized and communicated much of his life work to a broader audience beyond the academy. His four models for understanding the ways science and religion have been brought in relation—conflict, independence, dialogue, integration—became staples for educators and individuals trying to engage productively in questions about evolution and faith, the impact of technology on today’s world, and the ethical resources (gleaned from both science and religion) for addressing global problems related to the environment, genetic engineering, nuclear conflict, and social justice. News and Notices SCIENCE‐SPIRIRTUALITY Templeton Prize The winner of the 2001 Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion is The Revd Canon Dr Arthur Peacocke of Oxford University. As a physical biochemist specialising in biological macromolecules, Dr Peacocke pioneered early research into the structure of DNA, showing that the chains in the molecule are not branched but form a double helix. In 1971, the one‐ time agnostic became an Anglican priest. The only Oxford University Theology faculty member to hold both a Doctor of Science and a Doctor of Divinity degree, Dr Peacocke is a strong proponent of "critical realism," holding that both science and theology aim to depict reality and must be subject to scrutiny, while recognising their creative interaction. Created by global investor and philanthropist Sir John Templeton in 1972, each year the Templeton Prize acknowledges a living person who has shown extraordinary originality in advancing humanity's understanding of God and the role of spirituality in people's lives. Sir John has sought to honour progress in religion just as the Nobel Prizes recognise advances in economics, medicine, and chemistry. Currently valued at £700,000 sterling, the Prize represents the world's largest annual monetary award given to an individual and is always set at a level that exceeds that of the Nobels. Dr Peacocke joins an illustrious group of professional scientists who have won the Templeton Prize: last year's winner, Freeman Dyson, a physicist whose futuristic views have consistently called for the reconciliation of technology and social justice; physicist and theologian Ian Barbour in 1999; astrophysicist Paul Davies in 1995; physicist Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker in 1989; and Benedictine monk and professor of astrophysics Stanley Jaki in 1987. -

July 8, 2008 Sir John Templeton, Pioneer Investor and Philanthropist John Marks Templeton, the pioneer global investor who founded the Templeton Mutual Funds and for the past three decades devoted his fortune to his Foundation’s work on the “Big Questions” of science, religion, and human purpose, passed away on July 8, 2008, at Doctors Hospital in Nassau, Bahamas, of pneumonia. As a pioneer in both financial investments and philanthropy, John Templeton spent a lifetime encouraging open-mindedness. If he hadn’t sought new paths, he once said, “he would have been unable to attain so many goals.” The motto that Templeton created for his Foundation, “How little we know, how eager to learn”, exemplified his philosophy in the financial markets and his groundbreaking methods of philan- thropy. Templeton started his Wall Street career in 1937 and went on to create some of the world’s largest and most successful international investment funds. Called by Money magazine “arguably the greatest global stock picker of the century” (January 1999), he sold the Tem- pleton Funds in 1992 to the Franklin Group for $440 million. BOOK REVIEWS DIE RELIGIONEN IRANS. By Geo Widengren. Die Religionen der Mensch heit 14. Stuttgart: Kohlhammer, 1965. Pp. xvi + 393. DM 39 — This is an important book, yet at the same time an understandably con troversial one for two reasons: the strong personal views of the author and the difficulty of reaching universally acceptable conclusions because of problems of interpretation inherent in the available sources, especially for the earlier period. At the outset, the reviewer would suggest that this book be read side by side with the equally important work of J. Duchesne-Guille- min, La religion de l'Iran ancien (Paris, 1962), which appeared while Widen- gren's book was still in press. The two scholars cite earlier studies of each other and often indicate disagreement of interpretation on many points. This kind of disagreement is really salutary for the reader; for he is thus re peatedly warned that there are numerous serious problems in the investiga tion of Persian religion and that, for the present at least, no convincing solution is possible. W.'s book is at once systematic and comprehensive, and it reveals throughout a first-hand knowledge of the original sources He deliberately employs the plural Religionen in his title, because he covers not only pre- Zoroastrianism, Zoroastrianism, and later modifications of what may be regarded as Persian religion proper in the Parthian and Sassanid periods, but he deals also with Mandaeism, Manichaeism, and the cults of the Sagdians, Sacae, and other East Iranian peoples. He closes his exposition with a treat ment of Persian religion and its influence after the Islamic conquest. -
