Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation.

The main focus of FilmLA’s 2019 Television Report was the explosion of television content on streaming services, which was being filmed in diversifying production hubs across the globe.2 Since the study’s release, four new streaming platforms—Disney+©, Quibi©,3 Peacock© and HBO Max™—have entered the market, each with its own lineup of original, scripted content. This year, in mid-March, the COVID-19 pandemic brought global television production to a sudden and unprecedented halt. The last time a pandemic hit U.S. shores in 1918, the television industry did not even exist. At the time of preparing this report,4 principal photography for U.S. scripted series has begun to restart, with a handful of shows resuming filming in August and September.

Entertainment Inc. TEASER FADE IN: EXT. NEW YORK STREET - DAY Horns BLARE. Traffic jammed. Swarms of PEOPLE hurry down the street. All with purpose. Some place to be. This is, after all, rush hour in Manhattan. Through the crowd we see a MAN walking. Something about his gait, his demeanor * suggests a man much older than his 35 years. * The FACES that brush past begin to MORPH from present day to faces of a bygone era; the ‘50’s, the ‘40’s, 1890’s. Shoes change from sneakers to old leather work boots. Even the street itself MORPHS from concrete to cobblestone. The buildings change from sky-scrapers to old movie houses to tenements. Soon, the street is filled with pushcarts and wagons and kids playing stick-ball. Essentially, a two century time-lapse. HENRY (V.O.) My story is a long one. It’s exciting, romantic, full of adventure, intrigue, at times frustrating, lonely, and above all else... utterly ridiculous. You probably won’t believe me, which is fine. In fact, I prefer it that way. But I’ll tell you anyway, because beyond all else, I have lots and lots of time... BACK TO PRESENT -- as people brush past on their cell phones, * the MAN taps on the face of a distinct, ornate, antique * pocket watch and for the first time we get a good look at him.

PRESERVING, PLANNING, AND PROMOTING THE LOWER EAST SIDE: THE CONFLICTED ROLE OF THE TENEMENT MUSEUM IN NEW YORK’S PREMIER IMMIGRANT ENCLAVE by ADAM ZEV STEINBERG A Dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-New Brunswick Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Geography written under the direction of Robert Lake and approved by ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ ________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey May 2014 © 2014 Adam Steinberg ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Preserving, Planning, and Promoting the Lower East Side: The Conflicted Role of the Tenement Museum in New York’s Premier Immigrant Enclave By Adam Zev Steinberg Dissertation Director: Robert Lake This single-case study explores a cultural nonprofit house museum’s proposal to create a historic district on New York’s Lower East Side, a low-income but gentrifying neighborhood, in 2006-2007. The museum’s proposal failed because the museum didn't engage potential neighborhood allies in true bottom-up planning, and because the City’s landmarks law made it impossible for the museum’s proposal to address the neighborhood’s foremost concern, which was loss of affordable housing. This study suggests that in the postindustrial city it's very difficult for low-income communities to use culture to lay claim to their neighborhoods. It also suggests that historic preservation laws allow higher-income neighborhoods to protect themselves from the creative destruction of redevelopment by becoming historic districts, while still allowing wealth-generating redevelopment to happen in lower-income neighborhoods.
