Cedar Grove Stone Mountain Lovett Towers STATE CHAMPIONS Pace Academy Westminster DeKalb County teams have won 16 boys state titles. Lakeside Redan leads the way with seven victorious efforts: Those came in 1970, AA -Region 6 1974, 1975, 1978, 1981, 1997 and 2008. Briarcliff is next with Best Academy McNair three, having won in 1968, 1971, and 1972. Southwest DeKalb Douglass South Atlanta claimed consecutive state titles in 1979 and 1980. Peachtree won Hapeville Charter Therrell in 1973. Redan captured the 1988 championship. Henderson took Kipp Atlanta Washington the 1991 title. Chamblee won its first crown in 2008. 2 GIRLS SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS 1982 - Chamblee 2, Redan 1 - Chamblee won the first girls county championship game. The overtime victory which was one hour and forty minutes in length was decided by penalty kicks after the customary overtime and two five -minute sudden death periods. In 1982, only two teams were in the playoffs for the county championship. 1983 - Peachtree 3, Lakeside 1 - Peachtree, winner of the West, defeated Southwest DeKalb 3 -2 in the semi -finals. Lakeside, the second place finisher in the West, defeated East winner Redan 3 -0 to advance to the final game. 1984 - Lakeside 3, Chamblee 1 - All scoring came in the second half of the championship game. Lakeside goals were scored by Pamela Roberts, Susan Mendelson and Mary Weems, Ingrid Lium scored for Chamblee. 1985 - Stone Mountain 1, Lakeside 0. Debra O'Brien scored the only goal with 25:48 left in the first half. Stone Mountain, undefeat- ed during the regular season, beat Dunwoody 3 -0 and tied Clarkston 1 -1 in the other classic contests. The Pirates went 12 -0-1 while scoring 103 goals and allowing only three. The classic format was the third change in play -off procedure in four years. 1986 - Stone Mountain beat Lakeside, Dunwoody and Clarkston in the DeKalb Classic to finish the season undefeated. The Lady Pirates gave up just one goal during the entire campaign. Bill Kelly's team gave up a goal late in their 3 -1 victory over Clarkston in the Classic. Overall the Lady Pirates scored 72 goals. 1987 - Stone Mountain controlled the DeKalb Classic to win a third straight DeKalb County title. The Lady Pirates swept past Peachtree 5 -0, Henderson 1 -0 and Lakeside 3 -0. In the finale, Nicole Canzoneri scored all three goals. 1988 - The first Metro Atlanta Championship playoff was held in 1988. Three of the eight teams invited were from DeKalb. In the championship game, Henderson beat Stone Mountain 2 -1 with a come -from -behind win. The loss was the first for the Lady Pirates in four years. Lakeside also made the semi -finals and finished third in what was considered the unofficial girls state tournament. 1989 - The girls playoffs were expanded to 16 teams, four were from DeKalb County. Chamblee and Tucker lost in the first round. Stone Mountain tumbled in the quarter finals. Henderson lost 1 -0 to Marist in the semi -finals. 1990 - DeKalb had four teams (Chamblee, Dunwoody, Henderson, Lakeside) in the Metro Atlanta Championship playoff. Hender- son and Lakeside advanced to the second round before being eliminated. 1991 - Four teams qualified for the Metro Girls Tournament. Dunwoody beat Heritage and Stone Mountain defeated Pope to ad- vance to the quarter finals where both teams were eliminated. 1992 - Four teams qualified for the Metro Tournament. Dunwoody and Tucker lost first round games. Stone Mountain and Lakeside fell in the quarter finals. 1993 - Lakeside, Stone Mountain, Tucker and Dunwoody qualified for the State tournament. Only Lakeside survived the first round. The Lady Vikings shut out Lovett and Brookwood before losing to Pace 2 -1 in the semi -finals. 1994 - Stone Mountain made it to State semi -finals where they lost 1 -0 to Fayette County with 1:50 remaining in the second over- time. Tucker made it to the second round. Lakeside and Dunwoody also qualified for the state. 1995 - Stone Mountain, the 7AAAA champions, lost to Walton High School and Dunwoody lost to Fayette County in the first round. 1996 - Redan and Lakeside lost in the first round of the state. Stone Mountain clobbered Clarke Central in the first round, then lost to Pope. 1997 - Redan won the 7AAAA championship and Tucker took the 5AAA crown. Marist beat Lakeside 3 -0 for the 6AAA title. Redan, Tucker and Stone Mountain lost first round State tournament games. Lakeside reached the finals and lost to Marist by a score of 1 -0. 1998 - Lakeside was one of four DeKalb teams to make the State Tournament. The Lady Vikings beat Eastside 12-0, defeated North Gwinnett 1 -0 in overtime. It was the 12th shutout for the top ranked team in the State. In the semifinals, Lakeside lost to Starr’s Mill 2-1 in two overtimes. 1999 - Lakeside beat McEachern, but then lost to Pope. Both Clarkston and Tucker were shut out in the first round. 2000 - Stone Mountain lost to Rome 9 -0 in the first around of the state Class AAA tournament. 2001 - Lakeside lost to Duluth (2 -1), Stephenson fell to Brookwood (14 -0), Redan came up short against Shiloh (11 -0) and South- west DeKalb fell by a 15 -0 margin to Parkview in the first round of the state Class AAAAA tournament. Tucker also dropped a 3 -0 decision to Sequoyah in the opening round of state on the AAAA level. 2002 - Lakeside dropped a painful 1 -0 decision to Norcross, Stephenson fell by a 16 -1 margin to Brookwood and Redan lost a 15 -0 encounter against Parkview in opening round AAAAA action as DeKalb’s lone three state qualifiers. 2003 - Lakeside fell by a 6 -0 count to Chattahoochee and Stephenson dropped a 15 -0 decision to Centennial in opening round AAAAA state action. Druid Hills registered a 1 -0 victory over Cedar Shoals and lost by the same 1 -0 margin to Forsyth Central as the main highlight from the AAAA state wars. Columbia also came up short 15 -0 against Heritage in AAAA, while Towers failed to show in dropping a forfeit decision to Grayson in its state debut in AAA. 2004 - Seven DeKalb County teams earned state tournament berths in 2004. Lakeside came up short by a 2 -0 margin in a defensive battle against Lassiter in the first round of state Class AAAAA tournament action. Stephenson lost 12 -0 to Chattahoochee and South- west DeKalb dropped a 13 -0 decision to Pope in other AAAAA opening round contests. In AAAA state results, Druid Hills lost a heart -breaking 1 -0 overtime decision to Salem and Stone Mountain and Martin Luther King Jr. dropped identical 15 -0 matchups against Rockdale County and Heritage respectively in the first round. Towers lost 13 -0 to Grayson in the first round of AAA action. 3 SOCCER HISTORY Soccer became part of the Georgia High School Association's interscholastic athletic program in 1965 -66. DeKalb County joined the program in 1967 -68 for the regular GHSA winter season. In 1970, a fall league was established for smaller schools who did not participate in football. In 1979, the winter season was moved to spring. The first two state championship tournaments were held at Emory University. When DeKalb County joined the program, a majority of tournament games were held at the DeKalb County stadiums. Briarcliff was the first DeKalb County team to win a state championship in soccer.

    REPORT NSF GRANT #PHY-98143318 Title: The Distribution of an Illustrated Timeline Wall Chart and Teacher’s Guide of 20fhCentury Physics DOE Patent Clearance Granted December 26,2000 Principal Investigator, Brian Schwartz, The American Physical Society 1 Physics Ellipse College Park, MD 20740 301-209-3223 [email protected] BACKGROUND The American Physi a1 Society s part of its centennial celebration in March of 1999 decided to develop a timeline wall chart on the history of 20thcentury physics. This resulted in eleven consecutive posters, which when mounted side by side, create a %foot mural. The timeline exhibits and describes the millstones of physics in images and words. The timeline functions as a chronology, a work of art, a permanent open textbook, and a gigantic photo album covering a hundred years in the life of the community of physicists and the existence of the American Physical Society . Each of the eleven posters begins with a brief essay that places a major scientific achievement of the decade in its historical context. Large portraits of the essays’ subjects include youthful photographs of Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, and Richard Feynman among others, to help put a face on science. Below the essays, a total of over 130 individual discoveries and inventions, explained in dated text boxes with accompanying images, form the backbone of the timeline. For ease of comprehension, this wealth of material is organized into five color- coded story lines the stretch horizontally across the hundred years of the 20th century. The five story lines are: Cosmic Scale, relate the story of astrophysics and cosmology; Human Scale, refers to the physics of the more familiar distances from the global to the microscopic; Atomic Scale, focuses on the submicroscopic This report was prepared as an account of work sponsored by an agency of the United States Government.

SPORTS STRATEGY, 2000-2006 Kimio Kase* Sandalio Gómez** Ignacio Urrutia*** Magdalena Opazo**** Carlos Martí**** Abstract Over the period 2000-2006, Real Madrid Football Club and Barcelona Football Club pursued different strategies and achieved different results. In the latter half of the period (in contrast to the first half), Real Madrid won no trophies but was crowned the richest club in the world1. Meanwhile, after a disconcerting start, Barcelona won a UEFA Champions League and two La Liga titles, though it struggled financially. By analyzing the two clubs’ strategies and their financial and sporting performance over the chosen period we explore the different ways in which sports organizations can succeed, and how their success can be measured. The purpose of this study is to answer the following questions: What strategies did Real Madrid and Barcelona adopt to bring about this reversal of fortunes in a few short years? What variables explain the difference in outcomes? Are there any differences in their business and sports strategies? We use a matrix to analyze and relate the clubs’ financial and business strategy to their sports strategy.

The Clarkston boys brought home the first state trophy in 1940, and 41 other teams have since realized the big prize in the ensuing 76 years. From legendary coach Elmer Morrow ’s dominating boys teams at Druid Hills in the 1950s to the current boys powerhouses at Miller Grove and Columbia, the list of win- ners is an impressive one. Druid Hills knocked off Avondale (50 -44), Tifton (47 -44) and Jeff Davis (55 -42) in state finals in 1953, 1954 and 1957 respectively. Stone Mountain and Clarkston on the boys side, and Druid Hills and Stone Mountain among the girls served as the other early local powers. E.L. Rainey , another of DeKalb County’s original hoop coaching giants, led Stone Mountain to the Class B crown in 1957. Tom Church guided Clarkston to its second boys state championship with a victo- rious effort in the class B final in 1964. The girls matched the boys for the first time at Druid Hill in 1960, with Virginia Canady coaching that squad to the Class AAA title.

Thurmond CHARTER SYSTEM PETITION COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT SESSIONS Parents: The DeKalb County School District is seeking to become the largest charter system in the state of Georgia. In order to accomplish this goal, the district must submit a petition to the Georgia Department of Education seeking charter system status, and your input in this petition is sought. The district is seeking your thoughts on autonomy and flexibility at your school and how that autonomy and flexibility can lead to innovations in how students are taught and how the school is governed. Five community engagement sessions have been scheduled, and anyone seeking the opportunity to provide input is invited to attend, including parents, teachers, and other community members. You are also encouraged to review information from the Georgia Department of Education concerning charter systems, including some of the petitions from other school systems around the state that are already operating as a charter district.
