June 26 SCCBC Drivers Training June1 & 2 Rivers Edge Roadcourse, Mission, BC Worker Profile Name: Manfred Zumm Family: Linda Birthplace: Bremerhaven, Germany Occupation: Retired for 5 years Hobbies/Activities outside of racing: Playing drums with two Bands. Blues/Rock and Jazz. Reading Customary/favorite job at track: Flagging, being a TM and teaching new Workers. How and why did you get involved in race working and/or META. I always followed Motorsport. Westwood was like my second home on weekends, once I discovered the track after my landing in Canada in 1976. It was a great place to watch Motor Races. I noticed the people in their white clothing, but did not know what those guys were doing there. At the Molson Indy in Vancouver I discovered finally what those people in white were all about. I said to myself, that must be a great place to be in order to be very close to the track. Inside the 1995 Molson Indy Souvenir Magazine I discovered an ad about META. I contacted Ann Peters right away and she responded 2 weeks later in form of a large envelope with all the information's regarding working at turns, META etc. Thank you, Ann When did you get involved? March, 1996 What do you like most about it? As I said, it is the best seat in the house, in order to follow a Motor Sport Event. Then of course the camaraderie is for me a very important issue. What do you like least about it? There is almost nothing there, where I could say, what I don’t like about Turn Working. I could do without politics. I come to the Track in order to get away from certain daily routines, If you could attend any race, in any capacity, where and what would you choose? 24 Hr. Le Mans, 12 Hr. Sebring, Vintage F1 in Monaco, Historics at Laguna and Watkins Glen. Do you have any racing or race working “heroes”? Who are they? Michael Schumacher as a Racer and Roger Solomon as a Marshall, who taught me the most. To this day I get my answers from Roger, no matter of what concern I have regarding Motorsport issues. Also Stuart Hamilton gave me a great lesson in LeMans in order to be a good reliable blue flagger. The corner captain watched you like a hawk. What is your Favorite: Track? So far Laguna Seca . Turn? 4A First year event? CART Race in Portland 1996 Event? 24 Hr. In Le Mans and Rose Cup in Portland 1998 Race group? Big Bore Historics in Seattle What race stands out the most in your memory, and why? Forgot the exact year, but it was at Laguna during a CART Weekend. I was assigned to work at Turn 4 A. All by myself. No Radio etc. It was a memorable experience What things would you be sure to tell a new worker if s/he asked for your advice? Be safe and of course enjoy what you are doing. Don’t go home upset. Also don’t forget to ask plenty of questions. Like I did and still do. What is your favorite: Food? Real German Bratwurst with Potato Salad and Liver and Onions. Relaxation activity? Banging the Drums (as my wife would say) Book? Biography of Soccer legend Pele. Movie? Papillon Magazine? Modern Drummer Car? Porsche 911 Carrera Convertible in Canary Yellow Are you a frustrated racer? What car would you race? Porsche 911 What was the: Most embarrassing thing you ever did at the track? At Laguna Seca. As I said, I was by myself. Spectators behind me had to tell me, that we had a yellow flag situation. Turn 4 was quite far away and Roger couldn’t yell that loud. Funniest thing you’ve seen or done at the track? According to Roger and Ann I had difficulties assembling a broom one morning long time ago at Pacific Raceway. We did party the night before. Also some time ago at the campsite in Seattle I tried to pump air into my air mattress with the help of a hair dryer. The only problem was, that I did not put the plug from the hair dryer into the mattress. Did the consumption of beer had anything to do with it?? Most dangerous event you’ve seen or been involved in? Fontana Superspeedway 2000. Papas hit the wall between Turn 1 and Turn 2. Everybody hit the deck and covered up. Thank you Irene for your coaching and caring about my safety. Most awe-inspiring? Again. Laguna Seca Turn 4 A. Cars where coming right at you. Always on the edge and ready to bail out. Biggest thrill so far? Blue Flagging in Le Mans from daylight into darkness. What thing would you most like to have an opportunity to do? In Life: Playing drums with a Studio Band. At the Track: Drive the Pace Car Accomplishment: Meeting my Wife and best friend Linda. Discovered music again after 35 years of silence. Final Comments: This is my 23rd Year as a Turnworker. What do I know? Not much so to speak. Every Race is different. When you think, that you have something under control, a new situation develops and you learn from it. Important is that we can learn from mistakes. I happen to be a fellow who is coachable and is listening to advice. Let’s not forget, we are volunteers. I have to thank many people who gave me tips and knowledge regarding working at Racetracks. To me three People stand out from the early years. Roger Solomon, Stuart Hamilton and Rick Neyedli. I still miss Rick. Also the gang in Portland kicked my behind. But always in good faith. Now that I am stuck (so to speak) with the radio I would like to thank Karen and Andrew for their support and advice regarding communicating From SCCBC Website: http://www.sccbc.net/join-us-in-celebrating-our-25th-anniversary-at-mission/ Join Us in Celebrating Our 25th Anniversary at Mission Raceway Park Posted on May 10th, 2019 by Doug Floer Preparations are well underway for the July 27-28 ‘MISSION 25’ CACC race weekend. This event celebrates the 25th anniversary of the grand opening of the River’s Edge Road Course at Mission Raceway Park, and is in support of the Mission Hospice Society. Hosted by the Sports Car Club of BC (SCCBC) the event stands to be the best of the season with plenty of racing action. On the very same weekend, SCCBC will be hosting a 15 year reunion of our Sedan Drivers from Molson Indy Vancouver. The SCCBC held driver training schools and lapping events in 1992 and 1993 but did not open for racing until 1994. This was accomplished through the determination and support of a core of loyal club members known now as the “Founders of River’s Edge Road Course”, who will be celebrated at this event. Because of them more than 1800 people have benefited from more than 50 driver training schools, 150 race weekends have attracted more than 13,000 race entries.
