    THE COMMEMORATION OF COLONEL CRAWFORD AND THE VILIFICATION OF SIMON GIRTY: HOW POLITICIANS, HISTORIANS, AND THE PUBLIC MANIPULATE MEMORY Joshua Catalano A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2015 Committee: Andrew Schocket, Advisor Rebecca Mancuso ii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor In 1782, Colonel William Crawford led a force of a few hundred soldiers in a campaign to destroy the Indian forces gathered on the Sandusky Plains in present day Ohio. Crawford was captured by an enemy party following a botched offensive and was taken prisoner. After being tried, Crawford was brutally tortured and then burned alive in retaliation for a previous American campaign that slaughtered nearly one hundred peaceful Indians at the Moravian village of Gnadenhutten. This work analyzes the production, dissemination, and continual reinterpretation of the burning of Crawford until the War of 1812 and argues that the memory of the event impacted local, national, and international relations in addition to the reputations of two of its protagonists, William Crawford and Simon Girty. iii For Parker B. Some ethnologists believe the Shawnee descended from the Fort Ancient people. The Shawnees were wanderers, who lived in many places in the south. They became associated closely with the Delaware in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Able fighters, the Shawnees stubbornly resisted white pressures until the Treaty of Greene Ville in 1795. At the time of the arrival of the European explorers on the shores of the North American continent, the American Indians were living in a network of highly developed cultures. Each group lived in similar housing, wore similar clothing, ate similar food, and enjoyed similar tribal life. In the geographical northeastern part of North America, the principal American Indian tribes were: Abittibi, Abenaki, Algonquin, Beothuk, Cayuga, Chippewa, Delaware, Eastern Cree, Erie, Forest Potawatomi, Huron, Iroquois, Illinois, Kickapoo, Mohicans, Maliseet, Massachusetts, Menominee, Miami, Micmac, Mississauga, Mohawk, Montagnais, Munsee, Muskekowug, Nanticoke, Narragansett, Naskapi, Neutral, Nipissing, Ojibwa, Oneida, Onondaga, Ottawa, Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Peoria, Pequot, Piankashaw, Prairie Potawatomi, Sauk-Fox, Seneca, Susquehanna, Swamp-Cree, Tuscarora, Winnebago, and Wyandot.

    Fort Boonesborough State Park – Historic Pocket Brochure Text Outpost on the Wilderness Road Boonesborough is associated with Kentucky’s known frontiersmen—Daniel Boone, Simon Kenton, Richard Callaway, John Holder, Richard Henderson and Nathaniel Hart Long before their arrival to this site. Migratory animals used the gap and ford at the head of the Kentucky River palisades to cross the river. Native Americans occupied the site of Boonesborough for centuries and used the migratory animal trails as a trade route to the north and south of the Kentucky River. After establishment in 1775 Boonesborough continued to serve as a gathering place for eastern settlers who ventured to the English colonial frontier through the Cumberland Gap on the Wilderness Road. The poorly built stockade withstood several Indian attacks and was a bastion of Euro-American civilization on the colonial frontier and thus became of utmost importance to American history. Boonesborough’s beginnings were inauspicious, developing while the American Revolution was taking place in the Eastern Seaboard colonies. However, one of the most important American victories of the Revolution in the western campaign took place at this site in 1778. Although it was occupied as a settlement and existed as a town only until 1820, Boonesborough played a significant part in Kentucky’s history. A Legend Begins Perhaps no one figure has become more prominent to the American frontier experience than Daniel Boone. Through his own efforts and those of later writers, he is commonly regarded as the prototype of the American frontiersman. Nearly 70 of his 86 years were involved with the exploration and development of the trans-Appalachian frontier.

It also challenges the idea of a western persona as one created after the 1830s in the far regions of the country. The first American West and the personality developed to portray frontier life initially began in the Old northwest Territory. Using rhetorical analysis, historical research, and psychological Interpretation, my answer to these questions is that settlers moving into Kentucky and the Old Northwest created an early American identity that designated them as the first westerners. These settlers used the process of identifying difference or “othering” to various degrees and memory to identify what they believed to be acceptable and unacceptable character traits.

The Simon Kenton Chapter placed second, once again, in the President General’s Activity Contest. The fact we have been in the top two the past three years is still quite an accomplishment and one to be very proud of. Simon Kenton had the most points in the US Stark Service to Veterans Contest, but a Chapter cannot win the major contests two years in a row. Only Texas, Georgia, and North Carolina won more overall awards.     Simon Kenton's Gauntlet by Alan King Simon Kenton was born in the Bull Run Mountains of Prince William County, Virginia in 1755, of an Irish immigrant father and a mother who was a first generation Virginian. He was a large, strong youth and would be a larger man. He left his home at the age of 16 to find his way in the Kentucky wilderness. Stories tell of how Simon was madly in love with a girl named Ellen Cummins. When he found out that she was to be wed to another, he was enraged. He called the groom out to fight on the wedding day, and he was beaten senseless by Willy Leachman and his friends for his arrogance. Soon after, he met the young man alone and returned the favor. In fact, he believed that he had killed his rival. Simon's uncle was an Indian trader who had brought back many tales of the wilderness along the Ohio River. He told of the skies blackened by the passage of birds, the ground shaking from the passage of buffalo, and the fish so thick in the streams that they could be caught by hand. Fearing hanging, Simon left for the wilds of Kentucky in 1771. Kenton traveled for several weeks before reaching Pennsylvania, where he met a wealthy miller named Butler. Using the name Simon Butler, Kenton soon convinced Butler that they were long lost relatives from Ireland. He worked for Butler for two months and got good wages and a fine flintlock rifle. Kenton named it "Jacob" and it soon became like a part of him.
