Quinns Rock Secretary - Arthur Ventham Inside, under the watchful eyes of Barbara Avery, breakfast was being cooked and hot coffee laced with rum was being dispensed to those who wanted it. Outside in the darkness the Band and Choir from Peter Moyes Anglican Community School were settled and ready to go, our President Frank Baldry was doing last minute checks and our MC, Wally Harmer, was running through his list of dignitaries to make sure that he didn’t miss anyone. The car park was filling fast and a steady stream of sleepy eyed adults and children made their way in to the Club to pay their respects to our Diggers – most long gone but certainly not forgotten. As the time drew near the eerie sounds of the Pipers broadcast a solemn lament in the chill air but still the people came. Diggers proudly wearing their medals, standing tall and proud, what a sight to behold! As the Club grounds filled to capacity they stood six deep at the gates and in the car park to honour our fallen and to give thanks to those that still serve. During the minute silence you could have heard a pin drop such was the reverence of the crowd, even the younger ones seemed to understand the meaning of the Service. After the speeches had been made, wreaths laid and the anthems of Australia and New Zealand sung all waited with baited breath and eyes towards the heavens for the RAAF Fly Past. All of a sudden a large flock of parrots, in formation, did a spectacular fly past squawking loudly as if they were honouring those that paid the supreme sacrifice. Driving at this speed will always constitute reckless driving, regardless of the circumstances. It is not even a defence to say that you didn’t know what the speed limit was because speed limits are matters of law. And ignorance of the law is no excuse! People who have been convicted of multiple traffic offences often get surprised to hear they will face a permanent, or at least extremely long disqualification from driving. The law that prescribes the penalty for reckless driving has been frequently amended so the penalty a few years ago is not going to apply to you now. Sometimes road traffic law may not be as simple as it looks! Don't be tempted to plead guilty if you aren't sure, or because a Police officer tells you to.
