Today I thought that I would wear the tie that I wore during my swearing-in. I commence by acknowledging the Whadjuk Noongar people and pay my respects to their elders, past and present, for one last time in this chamber. It is good to see that Pokémon has brought a crowd into the gallery! It has clearly moved from Kings Park over to the public gallery. I worked out that I have been a member of the Legislative Council for almost 170 000 hours, which I think makes the amount of time that I have spoken in this chamber quite reasonable, in fact, and quite modest. It is with a great deal of pride that I stand here never having missed a division. I hope the Whip and her predecessors appreciate that. It is also fitting that I make my final speech on the appropriation bills because when I arrived in this place, I knew very little about the state’s finances. After 16 years on various estimates and finance committees of this house, I leave, I think, knowing too much about the state’s finances, and sometimes their state depresses me.

Condolence Motion HON SUE ELLERY (South Metropolitan — Leader of the House) [1.02 pm] — without notice: I move — That this house expresses its deep regret at the death of Hon George Maxwell (Max) Evans, MBE, a former member of the Legislative Council for the Metropolitan Province and the North Metropolitan Region, and places on record its appreciation for his long public service and tenders its profound sympathy to his wife and members of his family in their bereavement. I want to start by acknowledging the family, friends and colleagues of the former member, particularly the family members who are in the chamber today. I was elected to Parliament in 2001. That was the year that Hon Max Evans finished his 15-year career as a member of Parliament. Although I did not have the privilege of serving with him, I have tapped the memory of Hon Ken Travers who did serve with him. I have some insight into Hon Max Evans from Hon Ken Travers.

The Acting Executive Director of the Deportment of Conservation and Land Management wrote to a large number of stakeholders, covering all stakeholder groups, in December 1999, seeking comments on the draft terms of reference and the composition of the panel to undertake the review of sustained yield. The letter to stakeholders welcomed comments received up to 25 February 2000. Submissions received following this dote were also analysed and included in this report. Seventy-four submissions were received from community members and groups.     Extract from Hansard [COUNCIL - Tuesday, 25 May 2010] p3220b-3221a Hon Ken Travers HON PETER COLLIER — INTERJECTION COMMENT Statement HON KEN TRAVERS (North Metropolitan) [10.14 pm]: Hon Peter Collier made an interjection on Hon Ljiljanna Ravlich to the effect that when Eric Ripper goes, she will be gone. I have not heard a more sexist comment in this place for a long time. Hon Ljiljanna Ravlich is a member of Parliament in her own right. She is respected by members on this side of the house. She is held in high regard on this side of the house. We watch her tear the Minister for Training and Workforce Development to shreds on a daily basis when he cannot answer questions. His retort is to come into this place and make pathetic comments by somehow suggesting that Hon Ljiljanna Ravlich is here only because of Eric Ripper. That is an absolute nonsense. Hon Ljiljanna Ravlich was elected to this Parliament as a member in her own right because the Labor Party recognised she had abilities and competencies. That was a disgusting comment. If members want to make those sorts of comments — Several members interjected. The PRESIDENT: Order, members! Just calm down. It is nearing the end of the evening. We do not need any more cross-chamber interruptions. Hon KEN TRAVERS: I look forward to Hon Peter Collier referring to these comments in Hansard. Hon Ljiljanna Ravlich gets stuck into the minister, but she plays the ball; she does not play the man. If the minister wants to play the man, we can talk about how he became a member of this place and how his forgeries got him into this place.
