24 JULY 2014 JULY 2014 25 By Perry and Traci Nelson

Monday May 26th 2014 Traci and I decided to head up to Phoenix National Cemetery to pay tribute to a few of my friends as well as the thousands of others buried at this beautiful cemetery on Flags Memorial Day. We picked up a flyer for this rally at Arizona Bike Week a for the month earlier. Having no idea what to expect, as far as the Rally goes, at 6am we jumped on our bike and headed up … the cemetery is in Phoenix but is actually over 10 miles N/E of downtown. When we got close to the cemetery we noticed a long line of Fallen motorcycles and most had American flags next to them. The closer we got to the main gate the more bikes and flags we saw… At this point Traci and I knew we were in for something very special. Once inside we noticed a large stage set up so I told Traci to grab our QT Media passes out of our saddle bags. Thinking…You never know …there could be some cool stuff going on by the stage and it never hurts to have our media credentials. This was a very large media event, we had no idea, all the local TV crews and Media from all over the world were there… Our Governor Jan Brewer, 0ur State Senators Jeff Flake and John McCain, 0ur County Attorney Bill Montgomery, AZ Dept of Vet Services Ted Vogt, and Director of National Memorial Cemetery Jerry Rainey. What happened next was one of the most heartwarming tributes to our fallen heroes I have ever seen. Honor Guards from every service from WWll veterans to Boy Scouts marched in front of the stage, then came the commemorative wreaths, too many to count, from all the military backing organizations like…the USO… The Lions Club….The Elks…even a couple gals from the original “Rosie the Riveter” club… I was directing Traci where to go to take pictures. We both thought it would be cool to get a picture of The Rosie the Riveter gals next to their wreath with the stage in the background. Well this big security/staff gal would have nothing to do with it and tried to shoo them away, but that wasn’t going to happen. One of the Rosy the Riveter gals (well into her 80’s) turned and walked over to the wreath and said to the security gal.. “I’m getting my picture taken!” Don’t mess with Rosie! We got the Shot!...lol During this “Service” there were four planes that flew overhead-- then when they came back over there were only three planes-- commemorating the lost comrade… after the program there was a “Releasing of the Doves”. The Air Force released them a little early, and it was met by a remark by one of the speakers that “The Air Force has its own time frame”…..laughter…, Traci got a beautiful picture of the doves… This was a awesome event, afterward I met John McCain, and Jan Brewer. I was not talking politics or about the VA problems, but I did get caught on local news talking to John McCain, I was wearing a Cutoff Army BDU shirt and a camouflage bandanna and I guess the local media jumped on it; thinking I was there talking about the VA…. Here’s the facts. I am an Army vet, but the first thing I said to John McCain was the first thing I say to most people of interest; “Can my wife get a picture of us together?” and “isn’t she beautiful” John said “she sure is” and “she certainly came down a few notches getting with you” I said “John …we just met!” I’m thinking this is a Army-Navy thing lol..….much laughter…Then I said “John…Do you ride a motorcycle?” He said “No, on account of my leg is messed up” and he pointed to his leg (his leg was crushed ejecting from his plane during the Vietnam war). “well” I said, …”I can build you a trike?” and he said “ahhhhhh” everybody around us was laughing now…. I put politics aside when I report for QT, and in my social media, I do the same. Voting booths are booths-- I don’t write my political beliefs on my wall or on my sleeve. Keeps things simple, I get some crap for my silence…. Such is the life of a correspondent. I went to Gary Burton’s (Lance Corp US Marine), and a few other grave sites to pay my respects… The main reason I came to the Veterans Memorial Cemetery and the reason I will continue to come regularly as my brothers would for me. --Perry

32 JULY 2014 JULY 2014 33 Story and photos by Ray Seidel

Billed as So Cal’s biggest and best springtime event, the crowd at Simi Valley Harley Davidson last May seemed to bare that out. Even before noon, both sides of the dealer’s street (Condor Drive) were lined up with motorcycles as far as the eye could see, and the industrial sized parking lot across from them was filling up fast. This was a combination of a free bike show, vendor rows, swap meet, with live music by “Bleeding Harp.” Also the service department had open house.

First thing I saw in was the ladies of the Simi Valley HOG chapter had a tent set up with a bake sale with all manner of cup cakes and baked yummies. Vendor tents were set up on each side of a row of show bikes. At the far end of the lot was Dynojet, were you could dyno your bike for $95. A blue T-REX three-wheeler caught my eye that looked really juicy, with lines that looked like they came out of the Pininfarina studio. Maybe when I’m too old to balance a real motorcycle I’ll have to look into one of these. Checking out the vendors, I was looking for something I don’t see at most every other bike show. Certainly the Baconfreak tent did that. “Bacon is meat candy.” 25 flavors of bacon treats, dessert, jerky, plus T-shirts. Further on there was of course ladies apparel, some saddlebag liners, and SIKK SHIFT products which caught my eye. These were plastic cup holders and smart phone holders that mounted on the handlebar. While I’ve seen such things before, these appeared to be robust in construction and would likely work really well, as far as holding an item in place. Though I thought of one for my Droid so I could use its GPS, I believe a larger dedicated GPS as I’ve seen on some bikes would be much easier to navigate with. A key booth was Ventura County Animal Services, which brought some dogs for adoption and was seeking donations for a NEW shelter. This was backed up by Simi Valley Harley Davidson as they matched the $350 that was raised for a total of $700 for the new shelter. And, one of the dogs was adopted to a new home. Food for the day (with ticket) was Tri Tip – Chicken Sandwich or lunch combo of cole slaw & baked beans. For snacking there was Italian Ice, Lemonade, the Kettle Corn popcorn tent with different flavors of bagged popcorn including…bacon. (Which sold out.) By afternoon trophies were going out for several categories for best in show motorcycles, in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Pro construction had cash prizes of $1000, $750, $500, and $250. In the drawing mix was the 50/50, and a table of raffled prizes, including Sir Francis Bacon Peanut Brittle. Certainly a day for the bacon lovers. Best Paint award went to the “Machete” bike with an awesome painting of fan favorite Danny Trejo on the tank, along with other characters elsewhere. Another eye catcher was The Nightmare Before Christmas themed bike that had that Tim Burton look to it with swirls, Jack, Sally, and Zero. I had time to walk into the showroom, and the Simi Valley H-D store had plenty of bikes on hand, along with a large selection of clothing and accessories. There was also a full staff to help, as there was a lot of foot traffic on this busy day. Next I went into the service department looking for the soda machine, and noticed the place was spotless. I think most of us take this into consideration when we take our car or bike someplace to be worked on; if the shop looks like a wrecking yard imagine how much care they’ll put into your vehicle. But if it’s clean and organized, they care about quality. At the end of the day riding my Harley back home, I have to tell you the scenery out here in Simi Valley – the view, the rolling hills on a warm spring day – this is why we ride motorcycles in the first place. This is a good one, mark Metal Mayhem on your calendar for next year, you won’t be disappointed.

36 JULY 2014 JULY 2014 37 Bikers ride to border to protest for Marine’s release from Mexican jail PHOENIX -- A group of bikers headed to the United States-Mexico bor- der Thursday morning to protest for the release of a U.S. Marine from a Mexican jail.

Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi has been incarcerated since March, when he drove across the Mexican border with three guns inside his truck.

The Obama administration’s efforts to free captured American soldier Bowe Bergdahl got the patriot riders rolling. They believe the federal gov- ernment is not doing enough to free the 25-year-old Marine.

“The breaking point for me was when we let five terrorists go to spring a traitor,” ride organizer John Harrington said.

The riders say they are not only angered by the government’s lack of action but also by reports of how the Marine has been treated in jail.

Tahmooressi’s aunt, Glendale resident Beth Whitney, told 3TV in May that her nephew was beaten, stripped naked and chained at four points in his first jail. She said he was then moved to another jail, where he has been kept in isolation.

“Being strapped to a bed by all four appendages, naked, for 30 days, I’d say that’s not good. It’s time for somebody to step in and do something,” Harrington said.

Whitney also said her nephew fired his first attorney after being told to lie, postponing court hearings.

“I don’t understand the Mexican system of justice, but it seems to me that it was an accidental crossing,” said Mike Sullivan with Riders USA. “He didn’t mean to be there. There’s no reason for the treatment he’s had in that situation.”

Tahmooressi reportedly walked into Tijuana to shop but when he got back into his car on the U.S. side of the border, he missed his exit to San Diego and ended up back in Mexico. The guns he was carrying are allowed in the U.S. but illegal to bring into Mexico.

“It’s just an egregious act by the Mexican government,” said rider Vince Anselmo. “This is uncalled for. This man is not a criminal. This is a true American hero they’ve got down there.”

Arizona Congressman Matt Salmon recently visited the Marine at el Hon- go II prison in Tijuana and said he seemed to be in good spirits. He also said he was confident Tahmooressi would be treated respectfully.

The bikers began their ride in the Valley and hoped to pick up others on their way to the Tijuana border crossing.

They weren’t sure whether they would cross the border, but Harrington said, “It’s certainly something I’m willing to do if I can and if need be. I brought my passport.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

40 JULY 2014 JULY 2014 41 Wild Bill

Another one has come and gone. On May 6th through May 10th the city of Sierra Vista was the city to be in for Motorcycle haven. The 1st Chrome Pony Rally was launched. Now the weather was better than anyone could ask for. A little windy at times, but hey the wind hits you in the face right? The thought behind this event was to gather as many Motorcycle riders in one area. And see the Southwest in style, a part of our land most don’t see. Riders showed up from all around and settled in. The events and location guide was handed to everyone for the many guided tours that they could go on. These included guided rides to Bisbee/Tombstone AZ for lunch or you could ride to Kitt Peak National Observatory and also a guided ride to Biosphere 2. All started out in the mornings and they had you back in plenty of time to enjoy vendors and different events going on at Veterans Memorial Park in Sierra Vista. I spoke with Dee to make arrangements about meeting up with her so my daughter Christina and I headed out to the event. We arrived early at Veterans Memorial Park 3105 E Fry Blvd to a packed field of Vendors with all kinds of items. Standing out in the front row was Bob from the Law Tigers so I had to stop and hang out for awhile. Bob introduced me to Dee an she gave us the tour and you could see a lot of work went into this event planning and setting it all up. Bob also informed me that Mogollon (pronounced Mug-e-on) was playing and that he had known them and followed them for years. We toured the vendors and settled up front for the show. I can say of all nights for us to partake in this event this was a show not to miss. They jammed and had everyone standing/clapping and having a great time. And of course with knowing (Law Tiger) Bob we got to hang out with them backstage and learn all that they had been through. Doing the solo Guitar Star Bangle Banner was the topping of the night and with all proceeds going to the Disabled Veterans Fry chapter that night just made you feel like a true American. All of the riders that were there deserve a super thanks for making this first event a special one. Many thanks needs to go out to Dee for starting this event along with all of her sponsors help. They are in the planning stages for next year so please check out www. cromeponyrally.com I am sure this is one of the events you will want to make yearly. And they plan on having it near the end of May to better suit riders. Please keep an eye out for their ad in QuickThrottle Magazine.
