ABSTRACT

Bibliometric study of 2692 citations from 19 thesis submitted to Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola (MS) shows that journals are most cited form of communication amongst the veterinary Science researcher in . The half life period of Journal citations is 14 years. The study reveals that the percentage of journal citations is 78.90 and the percentage of books citation is 11.55. A citation analysis of doctoral dissertations submitted in veterinary science at Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidhyapeeth, Akola was performed as a way of determining the use of information sources made by the scholars of the university. A total of 19 Ph,D dissertations studied generated a total of 2692 citations. Distribution of citations by forms of documents, core journals, Principle of Obsolesence, Authorship Pattern was analyzed. The study reveals that journals is the most preferred source of information used by the researchers in the field of veterinary science accounting for 78.90% of total citations. The journal Indian Veterinary Journal has rank the highest with 251 citations accounting to 11.82% of the total journal citations. Thus the result of the study may be used as a mean of evaluative tool for quality collection of the Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidhyapeeth library.

Introduction:

Bibliometric is a quantitative or statistical analysis of recorded communication, printed and non printed sources. The analysis can be done by observation measurement and grouping and classifying. Citation Analysis is one form of bibliometric study. It makes use of bibliographic references which are essential part of primary scientific communication. The technique of citation analysis involved the process of collection, counting and analysis and interpretations of citations given in a various types of literature and thereby helps in identification of significant sources of information, individuals, institutions and other aggregates of scientific activities.

Objectives:

1. To know the various forms of information sources used by the research scholars in veterinary science.

International Journal of Library and Information Studies ISSN: 2231-4911 Vol.1(3), Jul-Sep 2011

2. To know the number of citations used by the research scholars in veterinary science. 3. To prepare a rank list of the core journals in the field of veterinary science. 4. To know the obsolescence of literature in veterinary science. 5. To know the half life period of journal and book citations. 6. To know the authorship pattern of journal citations.

Research Design and Methodology-

The literature cited in the Ph.D. dissertation in veterinary science is the basic source of information to access the information used by the researchers. Accordingly the bibliographical references cited at the end of Ph.D. theses will be taken as source data for the present study. The Ph.D. theses submitted to Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidhyapeeth, Akola in the subject veterinary science was studied.

The present investigation is concern with the sources referred to in Ph.D. theses submitted to Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidhyapeeth, Akola in the subject veterinary science during last five years. Bibliographic entries listed at the end of each thesis were collected by means of a work sheet design for this purpose.

Analysis of Citation

Quality is a variable factor or characteristic from one subject to another. Total 19 thesis were scanned in which total no of citations were 2692. The following table 1 shows the analysis of citations. Table No. 1 Cumulative Cumulative S.N. Source No. of Citation Percentage Citation Percentage 1 Journals 2124 78.90 2 Books 311 11.55 2435 90.45 3 Conference Proceedings 117 4.35 2552 94.8 4 Corporate Bodies 36 1.34 2588 96.14 5 Thesis/Dissertation 101 3.75 2689 99.89 6 Personal Communication 3 0.11 2692 100 2692 100 2692 100

It is observes from the above table 1 that the highest no of citations are from Journal, out of 2692 total citations, 2124 are from the journal i.e. 78.90% followed by Books11.55%, Conference proceedings 4.35%, Thesis 3.75%, Corporate bodies 1.34% and personal communication 0.11%.

Ranking of Veterinary Journal:

The ranking list is essentially a practical tool designed to help the librarians and research scientist to select the journal of maximum utility in relation to their coverage of new and important literature in a particular subject area. The rank list of Journals in the field of Veterinary Science based on the study is presented in table no.2. The journals cited 05 & more than 05 times have been considered in the rank list.

It is observed from the above table that the highest no of citations are from two authors. Out of 6619 citations 2830 i.e. 42.76% are from two authors. Out of 6619 citations, 4157 citations i.e. 62.80% are from Indian author where as 2464 citations i.e. 37.20% are from foreign authors.

Conclusion:

Citation pattern of source documents indicates that journal citation has been quoted more (78.90%) which shows journals are, in fact the best vehicle for communication of information. The study reveals the success breeds success characteristic. The major findings from the study are as follows:  The researcher in the field of veterinary science is mostly consulting the journals for their research work, which is the premier mode of scientific communication.  The journal Indian Veterinary Journal, Poultry Science, Indian Journal of Animal Sciences occupies the first three ranks respectively. Their contribution is 11.82%, 6.64% and 4.80% respectively among the total journal citations.  The half life period of journal citations in veterinary science is 19 years, whereas researchers cite more than 30 year old 14.47% citations.
