Examined closely, however, the kudos may have been premature. Abu Dhabi’s expensive renewables venture will neither allow the emirate to forgo construction of conventional generation, nor will it provide more than token reduction in carbon emissions growth. The main benefit lies in improving this OPEC oil producer’s international image, which, in the political context of a rentier monarchy, is an important source of domestic legitimacy.

  • Renewable and Alternative Energy in the U.A.E. Overview and Opportunities for Business
Renewable and Alternative Energy in the U.A.E. Overview and Opportunities for Business January 2017 INTRODUCTION Over the past decade, the U.A.E. has demonstrated a serious commitment to the development of renewable and alternative energy. The U.A.E. is currently installing four major nuclear power plants in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. It is also playing a leading role in solar, wind, and other renewable energy projects both in the U.A.E. and abroad. These initiatives should not be dismissed as mere attempts to bolster the U.A.E.’s public image and international standing. Rather, they are strategic choices by the U.A.E.’s leadership to promote the economic well being of the country and its people. After all, these programs: Help meet the U.A.E.’s growing demand for power. The U.A.E.’s energy demand is increasing at an annual rate of about 9%, due largely to population growth and expanding industrial capacity.i Reduce the U.A.E.’s dependence on natural gas imports. The U.A.E. is currently a net importer of natural gas, with gas imports from Qatar via the Dolphin Pipeline meeting approximately 30% of the U.A.E.’s energy requirements.ii Preserve the U.A.E.’s lucrative oil exports. U.A.E. petroleum exports generated almost $53 billion in 2015.iii Protect the U.A.E.’s environment and thus promote the health and wellbeing of its citizens. Provide business opportunities for U.A.E. companies and thereby create employment possibilities for U.A.E.

Masdar City and Masdar Institute at a glance Dr. Giovanni Palmisano Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, Abu Dhabi, UAE In 2008, Masdar City broke ground and embarked on a daring journey to develop the world’s most sustainable eco-city. From its inception, city planners knew that taking such a visionary concept to reality would be a challenging and an evolutionary process. Today, through smart investments, Masdar City is successfully pioneering a “greenprint” for how cities can accommodate rapid urbanization and dramatically reduce energy, water and waste. The city, which integrates ancient Arabic architectural techniques with modern building technologies, is naturally cooler, captures prevailing winds and is more comfortable during the high summer temperatures. But the sun is also a blessing. Harnessing the sun’s rays, Masdar uses clean energy generated onsite from rooftop solar arrays and from one of the largest photovoltaic installations in the Middle East. Some of the world’s most prominent companies like Siemens, GE and Lockheed Martin have made Masdar City their home in the Middle East, turning it into a leading business technology hub. It is welcoming too that the International Renewable Energy Agency, IRENA, chose Masdar City for its headquarters. However, this is only the beginning. Masdar City continues to add new businesses, schools, restaurants, apartments and much more – creating the diversity of any major, modern city. New projects include serviced apartments, a 500-unit residential complex, eco-villas and a new K- 12 school and university. When complete, up to 40,000 people will live in Masdar City, with up to a 50,000 working and studying every day.
