Early ontogeny and palaeoecology of the Mid−Miocene rissoid gastropods of the Central Paratethys THORSTEN KOWALKE and MATHIAS HARZHAUSER Kowalke, T. and Harzhauser, M. 2004. Early ontogeny and palaeoecology of the Mid−Miocene rissoid gastropods of the Central Paratethys. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 49 (1): 111–134. Twenty−six species of Rissoidae (Caenogastropoda: Littorinimorpha: Rissooidea) are described from the Badenian and Early Sarmatian of 14 localities in Austria and the Czech Republic (Molasse Basin, Styrian Basin, Vienna Basin) and from the Badenian of Coştei (Romania). For the first time, the early ontogenetic skeletal characters of these gastropods are de− scribed. Based on these features an indirect larval development with a planktotrophic veliger could be reconstructed for all investigated Mid−Miocene species. The status of Mohrensterniinae as a subfamily of the Rissoidae is confirmed by the mor− phology of the low conical protoconch, consisting of a fine spirally sculptured embryonic shell and a larval shell which is smooth except for growth lines. Transitions from embryonic shells to larval shells and from larval shells to teleoconchs are slightly thickened and indistinct. Whilst representatives of the subfamily Rissoinae characterise the marine Badenian assem− blages, Mohrensterniinae predominate the Early Sarmatian faunas. We hypothesize that this take−over by the Mohren− sterniinae was triggered by changes in the water chemistry towards polyhaline conditions. Consequently, the shift towards hypersaline conditions in the Late Sarmatian is mirrored by the abrupt decline of the subfamily. Four new species Rissoa costeiensis (Rissoinae) from the Badenian and Mohrensternia hollabrunnensis, Mohrensternia pfaffstaettensis,and Mohrensternia waldhofensis (Mohrensterniinae) from the Early Sarmatian are introduced. -

Current knowledge of the distribution of species of freshwater gastropods in the prairie states of South Dakota and Nebraska is sparse with no recent comprehensive studies. Historical surveys of gastropods in this region were conducted in the late 1800's to the early 1900's, and most current studies that include gastropods do not identify individuals to species. -

Фауна рек севера Западной Сибири, не принадлежащих бассейну Оби, представляет особый интерес с точки зрения зоогеографии и понимания процессов формирования пресноводной малакофауны. Начинаясь в таежной зоне, эти реки текут на север и не могут служить для интерзо- нального расселения видов из более низких широт. Однако сведения о пресноводной малакофауне таких речных бассейнов слабо представлены в научной литературе, часть опубликованных видовых нахождений сомнительна либо ошибочна. В работе рассмотрены брюхоногие моллюски семейства Valvatidae бассейна р. Таз, расположенного ближе к Енисею, чем к Оби. Материалом исследований послужили качественные и количественные сборы авторов. Установлено, что в водоемах и водото- ках бассейна Таза обитает восемь видов моллюсков рода Valvata, приведен аннотированный список видов, дана краткая зоогеографическая характеристика. Три вида (Valvata helicoidea, V. sorensis и V. korotnevi) впервые указаны для бассейна Таза, один из них (V. korotnevi) – впервые для водоёмов Западной Сибири. Mollusks of the family Valvatidae Gray, 1840 malacofauna of these river basins is poorly presented (Gastropoda, Heterobranchia) of the Taz River in the scientific literature, some of the published spe- basin (Western Siberia) cies findings are doubtful or erroneous. -
A Conservation Assessment of the Freshwater Gastropods of South Dakota Based on Historical Records and Recent Observations

A conservation assessment of the freshwater gastropods of South Dakota based on historical records and recent observations In South Dakota, like most U.S. states, up-to-date knowledge of the distribution of freshwater gastropod species is lacking and historical data suffers from a host of synonyms. I consulted literature records and online museum databases to compile a list of freshwater gastropods historically recorded for South Dakota. I used systematic studies and regional records to evaluate each historically-listed species reducing 54 nominal species to 25 expected to inhabit South Dakota. This, along with recent survey data from across the state, enable a benchmark conservation status to be established for the freshwater gastropods of South Dakota. My preliminary conservation evaluation indicates Planorbula armigera is critically imperiled (S1), while three species; Ferrissia rivularis, Campeloma decisum, and Amnicola limosus are imperiled (S2). The status of historical species not observed recently, and suspected inhabitants known from adjacent states are discussed.
