A sampling of these gifts is currently on display in the Cohen Wing dis- play cases, representing gifts received from current and former BSO members, and I gifts relating to Tanglewood, the BSO's summer home. Two items are pictured here: a 1936 caricature by Martha Powell Satchell of the BSO under Serge Koussevitzky, donated by former BSO cellist Robert Ripley; and a Whitestone photo of pianist Van Cliburn and then music director Erich Leinsdorf after a 1963 Tanglewood per- formance of Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 2, part of a large collection donated to the Archives in 1995 by the Eagle Publishing Company.     Graciela Paraskevaídis: Homenaje a Silvestre Revueltas 1 Planos Silvestre Revueltas - pocas veces el nombre y apellido de un artista han sido tan premonitorios como en este caso - es sin duda alguna uno de los creadores más asombrosos y originales del siglo XX. Su México no es sólo el de los mariachis, sones y corridos, sino también el de las calaveras y esqueletos de José Guadalupe Posada, los murales de Diego Rivera, las pinturas de Frida Kahlo, los poetas estridentistas y los trasterrados europeos como Lev Trotski, Tina Modotti, Hanns Eisler, Rodolfo Halffter y Otto Mayer Serra. El momento político de su máxima explosión creativa coincide con el sexenio del gobierno progresista del general Lázaro Cárdenas (1934-1940), impulsor de cambios sociales (la reforma agraria) y culturales (la reforma educativa y el apoyo al cine). Por otro lado, abarca la guerra civil española (que contó a Revueltas como defensor de la República) y el inicio de la segunda guerra mundial. También es el México de su colaboración musical y amistad personal primero y, a partir de 1935, del rompimiento definitivo y la dura confrontación con su coetáneo Carlos Chávez (1899-1978). Tema éste bastante tabú aún hoy en México, la perspectiva histórica ha ido echando luz sobre un enfrentamiento signado sin duda por irreconciliables visiones del mundo. Chávez y Revueltas representaban posicionamientos antagónicos: el pionero Revueltas frente al académico Chávez; el luchador idealista frente al pragmático calculador; el creador apasionado frente al detentador del poder musical en México; el comprometido testigo sonoro de su tiempo y época frente al “músico de hierro” como lo llamara Revueltas 2, primero modernista y luego cultor de un nacionalismo indigenista con tintes neoclásicos europeos, opciones estéticas éstas comparables a algunas del brasileño Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959).

    The Dallas Symphony Orchestra Presents: The Nature of Music May, 2021 Dear Fellow Educators, As spring arrives each year, I am reminded of the powerful relationship between nature and music. Both start as a single seed (or note!) and go on to blossom into something beautiful. Each plant, like each piece of music, is both a continuation of what came before and the start of something new. With Earth Day just a few weeks before our May concert, we wanted to use this Youth Concert as a way to explore and honor our planet through the lens of classical music. During our program, The Nature of Music, you and your students will hear music inspired by rivers, wildflowers, birds, and a busy bumblebee! Musicians have often used the earth’s natural beauty as inspiration for their music, and they try to use musical sounds to paint a picture for our ears, much like an artist would use different colors to paint a picture for our eyes. Each lesson will help your students explore and experience this connection. This concert will be offered virtually (available May 16 – June 4) but we are also accepting reservations for in-person viewing! Our two back-to-back concerts will be on Wednesday, May 5 at 10am and 11:30am. After studying the piano privately with Alessandro Longo, and harmony and composition with Camillo de Nardis and Paolo Serrao at the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella, Naples, he attended the Leipzig Conservatory where he completed his composition studies with Salomon Jadassohn. He worked all over Europe as a touring pianist before returning to Italy where he eventually settled in San Remo. He held several academic positions: first as a teacher of composition and then director at the Liceo Musicale, Bologna, then as director of the Liceo Musicale (later Conservatory) of Turin and professor of operatic studies at the Conservatorio di San Cecilia, Rome. As a composer, he speacialized in opera but also produced ballets, orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works. He is best known for having completed Puccini’s "Turandot." He had a successful international career as a concert pianist and has composed prolifically in various genres including: instrumental piano solos, chamber music, symphonic pieces and choral-symphonic music, songs, opera, cinematic and theater scores.
