  • TENNESSEE WALTZ Redd Stewart and Pee Wee King
CHORAL ARRANGEMENTS • COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME® AND MUSEUM TENNESSEE WALTZ Redd Stewart and Pee Wee King Redd Stewart and Pee Wee King of the Golden West Cowboys wrote “Tennessee Waltz” during the winter of 1946, in the back of a truck while traveling to a show in Nashville, TN. The song tells the story of a sweetheart who loses their beloved to a friend at a dance. “Tennessee Waltz” rose to fame as a country hit for Patti Page in 1950 but was soon a crossover success for numerous other artists, including Sam Cooke, The Chieftains, and Otis Redding. In addition to its national and international commercial success, “Tennessee Waltz” is played by many college marching bands, from North Carolina’s Appalachian State University to Texas’s Baylor University. The State of Tennessee adopted “Tennessee Waltz” as a state song in 1965. I was waltzing with my darlin’ to the Tennessee Waltz When an old friend I happened to see. I introduced her to my loved one and while they were waltzing, My friend stole my sweetheart from me. I remember the night and the Tennessee Waltz, Now I know just how much I have lost Yes, I lost my little darlin’ the night they were playin’ The beautiful Tennessee Waltz. With its aggressive beat and anti-establishment connotations, rockabilly is considered a widely male-dominated genre, a point supported by the majority of scholarship and literature on the subject. However, a review of available contemporary recordings, television shows, advertisements and interviews show that women were an integral part of the history of rockabilly music.

The First Waltz (or The Threshold of Possibility—Part Two) March 7th, 2021 Rev. Dr. Leon Dunkley North Universalist Chapel Society Good morning and good Sunday. I hope that this new day finds you well. My name is Leon Dunkley and I am honored to serve as minister here at North Chapel in Woodstock, VT. Welcome one and all. It is so good to be together. Welcome to the dreamers and the seekers of spirit, to the singers and the dancers of life. Welcome to the wanderers and the worshipers. Welcome to the darkness and the light. Welcome to every blissfully imperfect soul who is just like me, blessed and beloved beneath the shelter of late-winter skies, given in care and compassion for one another, given…as we all are with and forever for one another in grace. To all souls, I say, “Good morning. It is so good to be together.” Today is Sunday, March the 7th and the title of this morning’s reflection is The First Waltz. As you remember, we danced The Last Waltz last Sunday. So, this Sunday is sort of a sequel in reversal, if you will…complete with a telling subtitle, The Threshold of Possibility—Part Two. What are the ways by which we best see beauty? Have we learned to see in the world around us a reflection of the beauty that lies within? And how do we protect that beauty from being stained, tarnished or broken? How do we do our best to set it free? It is interesting to me—is it the same for you as well?—the reflexive quality of beauty…the beauty of music…of dance…of art.
