March 4 & 18 and April 1 & 15 Time: 1:00 pm Cost: None Show and Tell By Mary Smith To the elementary student, Show and Tell is just a game, a fun way to spend part of the school day. They don’t realize that many benefits that the interlude provides. They don’t realize how being passionate about something is very important. They aren’t aware of techniques for capturing the interest of the class. It never occurred to them that there were positive results from conferring with parents about the story they were sharing/the childparent relationship they experience. But these are the natural by products and enjoyable. But, for teachers, there are many positive things that can occur. They can observe students as they show initiative, use their creativity; learn of the students interests and, or perhaps dislikes. In a classroom these individual traits are sometimes difficult to see. Show and Tell can open a door to better understanding a student and it’s happening in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. It is a winwin situation for all, in the guise of Show and Tell. We recently had moved into a new area. I submitted my credentials and got on the list for substitute teaching in the district. This particular day I was called to substitute in the 5th grade. I had requested junior High but the secretary who called sounded desperate so 5th grade it was. Upon arriving at the school, I was greeted by the principal and told that that day was Show and Tell for my class, and all the classes. Apparently, there was a designated day of the month for that. She said the custom was to do this first thing in the day, after taking rollcall and the announcements. This new class had approximately 30 students. All seemed alert and well behaved and, of course, eager to get on with the schedule. The regular teacher had assigned three students for this day’s offerings. I sensed this was rather a special part of learning for this class, and for whomever was chosen to Show and Tell that particular day. I was impressed with the concept and the response. The first two students, were very well prepared, held the attention of the other students and seemed very comfortable as they did their part. The third student asked permission to get something from the cloakroom. He returned, carrying a large rather intricately ventilated glass jar. In it was a medium sized snake. It seems Doug, the student, had had an interest in herpetology from a very early age. His father being a scientist probably accounted for that. Doug placed the glass container on my desk and calmly proceeded to tell us all about this particular reptile. It was from Brazil. He said it was one of several varieties he had at home. The kids were mesmerized, even the most squeamish little girls. He knew his subject well and did a very fine presentation. After he finished, he rather shyly, asked if he could leave, the jar on my desk for the remainder of the day. He explained he didn’t want anyone agitating the snake, therefore I would be safer on my desk than in he cloakroom. What could I say? So, we put the creature on my desk. I told Doug I felt we should put some book around the bottle, so it wouldn’t be a distraction to the class. Of course, every child was well aware of our visitor and anytime a student needed to be out of their seat there was a long detour via the teacher’s desk. There was a lot of pencil sharpening going on! During lunch hour many of the teachers came in to inspect the visitor. Of course, it was in the guise of meeting the new teacher M substitute, but I knew better. It was very long day! I hope I managed to conceal the fact that I have an utter repulsion of snakes. Not fear so much as revulsion. Yes, it was a long day, but I found out something about myself that day; I found myself teaching geography, fractions and literature despite the occupant of the vessel on my desk. Mind over matter works M so does Show and Tell.
