Press Release Dawn Mellor Madame X and the Party Tricks Exhibition 23 November – 21 December 2001 Private view 6pm– 8pm, Thursday 22 November 2001 The Victoria Miro Gallery is delighted to present Madame X and the Party Tricks, a new series of seven large paintings by the young British artist Dawn Mellor. This is the first major presentation of her work in London since her solo show Wishing I Was Someone Else Instead at the Victoria Miro Gallery in 1999. Over the past five years Mellor’s work has developed around the relationship between the cult of celebrity, the fan and criminality. In each series of works Mellor casts herself as a criminal character through which her images are invented. Previous incarnations include a pathological pornographer, a lovesick and a sadistic voyeur, as well as a leader of a murderous girl-gang. Through these different ‘criminal’ positions, Mellor mocks the ‘moral’ codes which mainstream entertainment perpetuates, alongside the ‘immoral’ behaviour suggested by the gutter press of the celebrities they expose. For this exhibition Dawn Mellor has invented a female figure loosely based on the legend of Faust – a homosexual, lewd, drunken and blasphemous magician, who was obsessed with fame and able to conjure up and communicate with the devil. Having cast herself as Madame X, a vulgar, profane woman enthralled by American celebrities, Mellor has created seven images (like the deadly sins), which are her conjured tricks. Pin up icons, Madonna, Courtney Love, Britney Spears, Nicole Kidman, Whitney Houston, Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow all come under Madame X’s brutal and subversive gaze in this series of riotous, funny, irreverent and sometimes monstrous paintings. As in her earlier work, Mellor takes apart the cult of the muse fashioned by the media machine and reinvents their identities with double-edged meaning. “In positioning myself as various kinds of criminal characters I hope to relocate the celebrities as ‘actresses’ within the paintings who perform unexpected acts under the direction of the invented persona. The works have been loaded with internal narratives, heavy symbolism and clichéd allegory. In spite of a self-conscious mockery of fans, mainstream entertainment and tabloid journalism I hope to reveal some real sense of desire.” Dawn Mellor, 2001. Born in 1970, Dawn Mellor lives and works in London. Hollywood: Her Story April 2020 ENewsletter Contagion Contagion has become one of the most-watched movies around with a plot line that is in some ways eerily similar to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Parallels include the effects on health care professionals, government officials, and the public search for a cure for a frightening and widespread disease. Three of its stars--Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, and Marion Cotillard--are in our book and have had noteworthy careers, in addition to this film. Gwyneth Paltrow, daughter of actress Blythe Danner, debuted in two 1991 films--Shout and Hook; she played Wendy Darling in the latter, a Steven Spielberg-directed film. Her breakout acting role was in the acclaimed 1998 movie Shakespeare in Love for which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress. Although Paltrow reduced her filmmaking work as she was raising her young children, she did find the time to portray Pepper Potts in Iron Man and The Avengers movies. She was nominated for a Grammy Award for her work on the children’s audiobook The Brown Bear & Friends. Paltrow earned an Emmy for her guest appearance on the television program Glee. Today, Paltrow is focusing more on her businesses than on acting. Although British actress Kate Winslet debuted in a 1994 film, she rocketed to fame for her role in the 1997 movie Titanic for which she received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. That was her second Oscar nomination, but it would take another five nominations before she would win an acting Oscar in 2009 for The Reader.

SAN FRANCISCO FILM COMMISSION ANNUAL REPORT FY10-11 The San Francisco Film Commission works to develop and promote film activities in San Francisco. We proactively market San Francisco as a filming destination for the motion picture, television and related industries, for the purpose of stimulating economic development and creating jobs, while also working with the local film community to support local projects with significant ties to San Francisco. The Film Commission also issues permits to productions shooting in San Francisco, working closely with other City Agencies such as SFPD, Department of Parking & Traffic, MUNI, the Port of San Francisco, and the Department of Public Works to coordinate and facilitate both the needs of the productions, the City and its residents. FUNDING Funding for the San Francisco Film Commission comes from the collection of permit fees and the Hotel Tax funds from Grants for the Arts. For FY10-11, Grants for the Arts provided $400,000. The Film Office collected $158,500 in permit fees, $14,260 more than was projected for the FY10-11 fiscal year. FILMING STATISTICS FY10-11 Key findings: In FY 10-11, production rose by 26%, with 953 shoot days, compared to 753 shoot days in FY 9-10. In FY 10-11, the number of permits rose by 79, and the money collected from permits increased by $25,000. Total permit fees collected for FY 10-11 were $158,500. However, total estimated budgets for productions, which shot in San Francisco, decreased from $81,106,574 to $56,233,011. This is partially due to the fact that San Francisco didn’t have a television series shooting here.

A powerhouse cast of Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jack Davenport, Philip Baker Hall, and James Rebhorn go for broke in this tale of pathological deception. And Matt Damon is perfect as Ripley. Damon’s face can be exploited as handsome or goofy, depending on the lighting and camera positions, making his dual existence all the more believable. There's nothing wrong with the plotting, the costumes, or the music. It's an exceptional evocation of a time gone by, loaded with suspense and surprises. What isn't clear is whether the subject matter is too unpleasant to make for a good film. While undeniably The Talented Mr. Ripley is more tasteful than the reprehensible Hannibal (2001), it may be asking too much to have a protagonist this twisted as the relentless focus of the story. There's no getting away from him. (Yes, he's in every scene.) While films with anti-heroes are common, and successful, the anti-hero must have a goal the audience can identify with—revenge is a common one.
