Readings are drawn from journal articles, essays and book chapters. Several handouts will be distributed in class. Course Description The Sporting Spirit invites students to consider a variety of classic and contemporary, international and domestic sports films featuring heroes and villains from baseball, basketball, boxing, biking, track & field, football, auto racing, soccer and other sports stages. Students will develop a rhetorical analysis of a socially significant sports film after exposure to numerous critical perspectives. Sports films will be understood as communicative acts born in social contexts. A myriad of social issues will be explored through the lens of sports film including, but not limited to nationalism, globalism, racial and ethnic identity, gender identity, communalism, individualism and commodification. Epideictic, inspirational and motivational aspects of sports films will also be examined. Course Objectives • The student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the communication process as it relates to film. • The student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of several terms related to film production and analysis. • The student will be able to identify generic components of classical and contemporary sports films. • The student will be able to write 2 essays in response to questions arising from particular sports films in social contexts.
