The Bulldogs, who have six new players on their 2007-08 roster, were picked to finish seventh in the 11-team Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference by preseason prognosticators. Of the seven players back, three were 2006-07 starters – senior guards Derrick Davis (10.4 ppg, 3.2 apg) and Robert Baker (3.2 ppg, 2.1 rpg) and junior forward Julius Carter (7.8 ppg, 5.3 rpg). Of the three starters, only Davis, who was slowed by a recurring shoulder injury in the preseason, has been in the starting lineup, getting the nod in the Bulldogs’ only home game – a 76-64 loss to Jacksonville on last Wednesday. Newcomers have dominated the SC State starters. They include transfer guard Jessie Burton, who has started all three games at the point guard position, freshman Carrio Bennett, who has been the regular at shooting guard, JUCO standout Jason Johnson, at one forward and transfer David Cobb at the other forward, with last year’s reserve forward Chris Miller-Williams in the middle. Miller, a junior leads the team in both scoring (11.6 ppg) and rebounding (7.6 rpg). Wright State transfer Everett Spencer, who sat out the 2006-07 campaign, has gotten off to a slow start, contributing just five points in the two games that he has played. He missed the Jacksonville game with a minor injury but is expected to play against the Tar Heels. In addition to Jacksonville, the Bulldogs have lost at intrastate rival South Carolina (92-67) on Nov. 9, and at Old Dominion (64-54) on Nov. 11. About North Carolina: Top-ranked North Carolina (2-0) will be playing it second consecutive home contest. The Tar Heels are coming off a 107-72 triumph over Iona on Sunday. Earlier, in its only other regular season game, UNC edged Davidson 72-68 at Davidson. Coach Roy Williams’ team features one of the most potent lineups in the country, led by Tyler Hansbrough, who had 27 points in the win over Iona Sunday, a game in which five Tar Heels scored in double figures. He gets plenty of help from teammates Deon Thompson and Danny Green, who had 13 and 15 points, respectively in the victory. The Match-up: Tuesday’s SC State – North Carolina matchup will be second round action of the Findlay Toyota Las Vegas Invitational Tournament, which will have the final two rounds at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas Friday and Saturday. The Iona contest was first-round action for the Tar Heels, and the Nov. 11 Bulldog – Old Dominion game was a first-round contest for Coach Carter’s team. SC State will meet Iona on Friday, while UNC will take on Old Dominion. The final round will be on Saturday. The Tar Heels will be the biggest team SC State will have faced in the early going of the campaign. About the Coaches: Tim Carter is in his first season at SC State head coach. The Wichita, Kansas native and Kansas graduate took over the reins of the Bulldog program after one season as an assistant at Florida State. He previously was head coach at Texas-San Antonio for 11 seasons. TEAM COMPARISON Roy Williams is in his fifth season as head coach at North Carolina where he led the Tar Heels to the national title in 2005. The Asheville, NC native is 108-30 at UNC through the current campaign.
