Colm Wilkinson Broadway & Beyond Tony nominated, Drama Desk and Olivier nominated! Helen Hays and Theatre World Award winning performer Colm Wilkinson, one of theater’s most beloved voices, brings his astonishing vocal talents to the stage for an evening of unsurpassed entertainment. Theater lovers around the world need no introduction to the man who originated such roles as Jean Valjean in “Les Miserables” and the Phantom in "The Phantom of the Opera". Boone, Advisor Johanna Devaney Anna Gawboy Copyright by Dana Lauren DeVlieger 2016 Abstract “Whiskey in the Jar” is a traditional Irish song that is performed by musicians from many different musical genres. However, because there are influential recordings of the song performed in different styles, from folk to punk to metal, one begins to wonder what the role of the song’s Irish heritage is and whether or not it retains a sense of Irish identity in different iterations. The current project examines a corpus of 398 recordings of “Whiskey in the Jar” by artists from all over the world. Both personal and collective, identity can lend comfort or give pain. It can be used, as by Joseph Surface and Tartuffe, as a mask to deceive others – or, unconsciously, as by Timon, to deceive ourselves. But false identity, like Viola’s gender deception, can also lead to happy discoveries. Identity can both unite and divide. How can I be myself yet belong to a greater whole? Am I Romeo first? Or am I first a Montague? In an age of anxiety over immigration, globalization and Brexit, is identity at odds with diversity? In 1914, clinging to a particular definition of Canadian identity, our country betrayed the Sikh passengers of the Komagata Maru – most of whom had served in the British Army and were thus entitled to residency here – by denying them entry. The Breathing Hole and The Madwoman of Chaillot suggest a profound question: if our sense of identity can stretch to encompass not only other peoples but future generations and perhaps even the land itself, might we discover a deeper sense of what it means to be Canadian? One, perhaps, informed by the spirit of the original and sovereign caretakers of this land: our First Nations. Finally, as we celebrate our national identity, we might do well to remember that, no matter how we name ourselves, actions, not words, will define us.

Music Theatre International MUSIC THEATRE INTERNATIONAL is one of the world’s major dramatic licensing agen- cies, specializing in Broadway, Off-Broadway and West End musicals. Since its founding in 1952, MTI has been responsible for supplying scripts and musical materials to theatres worldwide and for protecting the rights and legacy of the authors whom it represents. It has been a driving force in cultivating new work and in extending the production life of some of the classics: Guys and Dolls, West Side Story, Fiddler On The Roof, Les Misérables, Annie, Of Thee I Sing, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Damn Yankees, The Music Man, Evita, and the complete musical theatre works of composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim, among others. Apart from the major Broadway and Off- Broadway shows, MTI is proud to represent youth shows, revues and musicals which began life in regional theatre and have since become worthy additions to the musical theatre canon. MTI shows have been performed by 30,000 amateur and professional theatrical organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada, and in over 60 countries around the world.
