SUNDAY, APRIL 12 — DEPART PHILADELPHIA OR MIAMI

DAY 1 – MONDAY, APRIL 13 MONTEVIDEO  10:00 AM – Arrive Montevideo, group transfer to hotel for check-in

 1:00 PM – A private three-hour tour of the most important sites of Montevideo to visit some of the most “characteristic” places this wonderful city has to offer, giving you a rich glimpse of Uruguayan life and culture. Walk around the “Old City” and enjoy classic European architecture. Visit the GAUCHO MUSEUM and bustling Port Market, where you will witness “CANDOMBE” performances. Shop in the art galleries and fabulous craft shops of this neighborhood, before proceeding to the neighborhoods of Carrasco, Punta Gorda, and Pocitos to stroll along the lovely “RAMBLA”. OVERNIGHT IN MONTEVIDEO—ARMON SUITES HOTEL Meals included: Dinner DAY 2 – TUESDAY, APRIL 14 MONTEVIDEO  8:00 AM – Enjoy breakfast in the hotel

 9:00 AM – Our tour begins in Old Town, where Jewish immigrants first settled in the city in 19th century. We visit the Sephardic community’s Sinagoga BEIT ISRAEL, and on to Constitution Square, Metropolitan Cathedral, Town Hall (Cabildo), and GURVICH MUSEUM.

On to Solis Theatre, GOLDA MEIR SQUARE, Hebraica and Maccabi sport centers, and Independence Square, which houses the Artigas Monument & Mausoleum. We end our tour with a visit to the Ashkenazi synagogue and JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER, where we meet with members of Montevideo’s Jewish community. Lunch on own.

 2:00 PM – After lunch we pass the City Bus Station, the Italian Hospital and Obelisk, and visit Batlle Park, where RAOUL WALLENBERG is honored.

 3:00 PM – On our way to the city’s HOLOCAUST memorial, which is the only one of its kind in South America, we will pass the Velodrome, Centennial Football (soccer) Stadium, and Monument to the Covered Wagon, a local landmark, where we will stop for photos. After our visit to the Holocaust memorial, we will take a glimpse at present day life in POCITOS residential area, home to a large number of Uruguay’s Jews.

 5:00 PM – Back to hotel for a rest, and then a FREE EVENING to dine and explore on your own. OVERNIGHT IN MONTEVIDEO—ARMON SUITES HOTEL Meals included: Breakfast | Lunch THE DAY-TO-DAY

DAY 3 – WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15 MONTEVIDEO  8:00 AM – Enjoy breakfast in the hotel

 9:00 AM – This morning we begin in COLONIA DEL SACRAMENTO, an 18th-Century Portuguese settlement declared a Patrimony of Mankind site by UNESCO for its remarkable architecture. On this memorable tour of Colonia, we will walk along its stone streets and visit its many colonial-era buildings, including the SPANISH FORT and Portuguese Museum. We will also visit the port, downtown, Ferrando Beach and the Tree Reserve, PLAZA DE TOROS, the Hippodrome, and old harbor. Box lunch provided.

 4:00 PM – Late afternoon we will travel by ferry to Buenos Aires, where, on arrival, we check into our hotel in Abastos, a once Jewish neighborhood.

 7:00 PM – Having rested and refreshed ourselves, we will dine at a local eatery, and enjoy a leisurely stroll. OVERNIGHT IN BUENOS AIRES—ABASTOS HOTEL Meals included: Breakfast | Dinner DAY 4 – THURSDAY, APRIL 16 BUENOS AIRES  8:00 AM – Breakfast at hotel

 9:00 AM – The JEWISH HERITAGE TOUR is designed to acquaint visitors with areas where Jews first settled in Argentina, where they were integrated with and contributed to the development and growth of the country.

We begin by visiting the JEWISH NEIGHBORHOODS of Once and Abastos, with their many synagogues, two important Jewish clubs (Hebraica and Maccabi), numerous schools, businesses and kosher markets, pizzerias, restaurants, and bars. Here, we will visit AMIA (Mutual Israel Argentina Association), an institution founded in 1894, whose new building, where innumerable cultural and social welfare programs are offered, replaces that destroyed in the infamous 1994 terrorist attack.

We continue our tour with a visit to the SINAGOGA CENTRALE, located on Libertad Street, where the first Jewish community was established. The synagogue is the first and largest in the city. Our tour culminates at PLAZA EX EMBAJADA DE ISRAEL, which memorializes the 1992 bombing of the Israeli Embassy in Argentina, and a visit to L’DOR V’DOR, an interesting project where Jewish seniors and kindergarten children work together.

DAY 4 – THURSDAY, APRIL 16 MONTEVIDEO  7:00 PM – We are in for a real treat this evening…

We will dine to TANGO music! The music of Buenos Aires par excellence, whose origins were in the city’s slums during the 1880’s. Inhabited by Italian and Spanish immigrants, blacks and gauchos, the city’s slums gave rise to a racial mix known as ‘COMPADRITOS’ (smalltime hoods) who reflected in their music and dance the unique characteristics of the neighborhoods in which they lived. Their music is a mix of Cuban and Spanish rhythms, some POLKA, and, as many say, rhythms of Africa.  9:00 AM – This morning, we will visit Plaza de Armas, founded in 1581, and known today as the PLAZA DE MAYO. This is the historical, cultural, and political center of the city, and its Pyramid de Mayo is the Argentina’s first national monument, erected in 1811.

We will see the CASA ROSADA, the seat of power—the presidential palace, Cabinet, and the city’s first municipality, which dates back to 1754. From the plaza, we will head down the Avenida de Mayo to SAN TELMO, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Buenos Aires, settled by aristocratic families at the end of the 19th century. Next, we travel south to the picturesque and colorful port of La Boca, stroll its famous “CAMINITO”, visit its many interesting shops, and enjoy lunch (on own) in one of its many renowned cantinas.

After lunch, we proceed to the more modern neighborhoods of Palermo, Puerto Madero, and Recoleta, which will include a visit to the cemetery of Recoleta, where EVA PERON is buried.

 6:10 PM – Benchlikt—Shabbat candle-lighting

THE DAY-TO-DAY

DAY 6 – SATURDAY, APRIL 18 BUENOS AIRES SHABBAT SHALOM!  8:00 AM – Breakfast at hotel

 9:00 AM – If you wish to attend Shabbat services, arrangements will be made for you to do so (without a guide), otherwise the day and evening is yours to do with as you will!

 1:00 PM – Shabbat lunch will be served at the hotel

 7:04 PM – Before you head out to dine for the evening, join us in the hotel for HAVDALAH and cocktails to welcome the new week! SHAVUAH TOV! OVERNIGHT IN BUENOS AIRES—ABASTOS HOTEL Meals included: Breakfast | Lunch DAY 7 – SUNDAY, APRIL 19 BUENOS AIRES  7:00 AM – Breakfast at hotel

 8:00 AM – We depart our hotel for a very special (and full!) day with the gauchos at ESTANCIA SANTA SUSANA, which has been owned by the Rossiter family since 1860. This is an authentic GAUCHO FARM, whose five thousand acres are devoted to agriculture, and cattle and horse breeding. In addition to the main house, you will visitthe “PULPERIA”, a traditional general store and sunset gathering place for guachos.

Here, we will partake on EMPANADAS and salads, and lunch in the dining room on genuine Argentine barbecue.

As part of our gaucho experience, we will enjoy a folklore show with live music and dancing, as well as CUADRERAS and ring races where gauchos will demonstrate their world-famous skills as riders. If you are inclined, horses and sulkies will be available for you to tour the estancia.

 6:00 PM – Before heading back to our hotel, we will enjoy traditional pastries and green tea. OVERNIGHT IN BUENOS AIRES—ABASTOS HOTEL Meals included: Breakfast | Lunch THE DAY-TO-DAY

DAY 8 – MONDAY, APRIL 20 IGUASSU FALLS  7:00 AM – Breakfast at hotel

 8:00 AM – We depart our hotel for a flight to Iguassu Falls, where, upon arrival, we will be met our guide to begin our tour of the falls.

On the Argentine side of Iguassu Falls, we begin with the Superior Circuit and DEVIL’S THROAT, located within Iguassu National Park. With an area of almost 170,000 acres, the park has been declared a Natural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO. The Falls are integrated by 275 waterfalls that fall from an average altitude of seventy meters. The starting point is “Central Station”, from which visitors can choose to take the train that goes to “Falls Station” or the one that goes to “Devil’s Throat Station”. There are various excursions, including the superior walk of more than 2,600 FEET OF FOOTBRIDGES elevated over the surface of the terrain, so as not to disturb or frighten the fauna. This walk will allow us to observe the waterfalls from the upper part of DOS HERMANAS, Bosetti, Bernabé Méndez, M’Bigua Falls, among others. The walk lasts an hour, with a low range of difficulty, without stairs. Lunch and dinner on own. OVERNIGHT IN IGUASSU—HOTEL ESTURION Meals included: Breakfast DAY 9 – TUESDAY, APRIL 21 IGUASSU FALLS  8:00 AM – Breakfast at hotel

 9:00 AM – Our second day at Iguassu Falls is the inferior walk, which includes five thousand feet of footbridges elevated over the surface of the terrain, and during which we will view the Two Sisters, ALVAR NUÑEZ, San Martín, and Bosetti falls, and the Rock de la Bella Vista. We will enjoy a panoramic view of the Devil’s Throat and the RÍO IGUASSU Inferior Canyon. The walk lasts for two hours, with moderate range of difficulty, with stairs. Those who wish to visit Isla San Martín may do so on an optional tour on the “LA GRAN AVENTURA” excursion.

 2:00 PM – Following lunch (on own) we head back to Buenos Aires for our FAREWELL DINNER, and our flight home. OVERNIGHT EN ROUTE TO U.S.A. Meals included: Breakfast | Dinner
