Latest News Update on Australian Defence Force operations - Press conference on 31 March with Vice Admiral David Johnston and Air Commodore Vincent ‘Joe’ Iervasi At the Press Conference on 31 March, Vice Admiral Johnston started with the contribution to Fiji in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Winston. It commenced with the establishment of an air bridge between Townsville, Brisbane and into Suva which enabled the ADF to very rapidly provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Fiji. Surveillance aircraft were positioned to perform air assessments of the degree of damage and helicopters were also deployed to increase the rate of the assessments being performed, and to commence the delivery of aid to the more remote communities. -

The Great Killings in Indonesia through the Australian mass media Richard Tanter1 The killings in the months after October 1965 were the foundation of Suharto's ensuing three decades of power, and in a sense, the foundation of “post-Vietnam” Southeast Asia. They were certainly the pre-condition for subsequent Australian (and US, and Japanese) support for the New Order. The killings can be regarded as the constitutive terror of the New Order state.i Throughout the three decades of Suharto's New Order, these events were literally unspeakable: as if, in Germany, the Nazi crimes could not have been publicly discussed even in 1980. With the passing of Suharto there was some small shift, but essentially the mass trauma remains repressed. Until that trauma is directly and openly addressed, the much in the subjective life of Indonesian politics will remain literally explosive. However, my topic is not the killings themselves, but rather the smaller and less central issue of one aspect of the foreign response and understandings of the killings: contemporary Australian representations of the killings. My starting point is the fact that in Australia - the country next door to Indonesia - there is very little awareness of these killings. This was demonstrated soon after the events. The political sociologist Rod Tiffen carried out a well designed public opinion survey in the early 1970s in Melbourne. Almost 60% of the sample did knew who Suharto was, and most approved of him and Indonesia under his rule. In their account of Suharto's rise to power, most of these knowledgables referred to the coup - as Tiffen remarks, “the best remembered aspect of contemporary Indonesia”. -

Mullins Quick books, quick manoeuvres University of Canberra Patrick Mullins Quick books, quick manoeuvres: Disentangling the dangers and opportunities of the quickie political biography Abstract: The publication of the biography of the political leader is de rigueur in the Australian electoral cycle. Characterised by their haste of production, by their regurgitation of already-published articles, and by a liberal use of quotes attributed and not, such books are often ephemeral confections, destined for the dustbin whether their subject is successful or not (Blewett, 2007). But the political quickie is, on closer inspection, a mix of competing opportunities and dangers that belie its negative description. When considered, the quickie is revealing of the uses of biographical writing to perform, connect, and manoeuvre within a political context. Trafalgar Dinner Address by Vice Admiral Tim Barrett, AO, CSC, RAN Chief of Navy Australian Defence Force Academy 17 October 2014 Ladies and Gentlemen, good evening. It is a distinct pleasure to dine with you this evening, to mark what will, in just a few days, be the 209th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. There is reason for us being here tonight; a great and significant purpose. Some might think it because the Royal Australian Navy has four serving Vice Admirals for the first time in its history but, however impressive, that is not why we’re here. Some might think it because we can have an enjoyable evening together but, while I am sure we will, that is not why we’re here. Some might think it so I can quiz you on which of the RAN’s serving Vice Admirals is the same height as Lord Nelson – no pressure to get the right answer – but that is not why we are here. Ladies and Gentlemen, the reason we are here tonight is because we are different; different by virtue of our membership of the naval profession of arms. While we are rightly part of a joint force, the Australian Defence Force, and while you attend a tri‐service academy, you are still different from your army and air force peers. The value you will bring to the joint fight is your expertise, your skill, your mastery of warfare at sea – on, over, under and from the sea. Whether you are aircrew, supply, engineer, warfare officer, doctor, dentist or submariner, you are first and foremost a naval officer – it is a unique profession in its benefits and challenges – it is anything but ordinary and it is immensely important to Australia. -

Raytheon Australia 4 Brindabella Cct Brindabella Park Canberra Airport, ACT 2609 Andrew Whittaker General Manager Above Water Systems Andrew Whittaker is the General Manager of the Above Water Systems Product Line for Raytheon Australia. In this role he is accountable for Raytheon Australia’s performance on a range of maritime programs, including the complex multi-billion dollar Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) Program. With skilled resources in Adelaide, Sydney and Perth, he is responsible for the sustainment and growth of Raytheon Australia’s surface ships capability, including Combat System integration, enterprise services, sustainment and training services. Andrew has over 33 years experience as a professional engineer, including 23 years experience in senior leadership positions. He has an extensive background in project management, systems engineering, and in the, specification, development, and implementation of electronics and software based systems. He joined Raytheon Australia in 2005 as Engineering Director in the Naval Systems Business Unit and has served as a member of AWD Alliance Management Team since 2007. He held the Navy delegation as the senior engineer on the AWD Program between 2007 and 2017. Andrew started his professional career in 1987 with Cossor Electronics (a Raytheon company) as an electronics design engineer. In 1991 he migrated from the UK to Australia joining Stanilite and then ADI Limited (now Thales). He was responsible for the design and development of communications switching systems that were integrated into the ANZAC frigates, Military Air Traffic Control systems and Cellular telephony systems exported to PNG and China. He was also the technical lead for the JTFHQ integration into HMAS Manoora and a number of other successful projects and bids. -

USS Iowa – Prologue Let me tell you about BB-61, The USS Iowa, since it‘s a part of what happened: USS Iowa (BB-61), the lead ship of the Iowa class battleship, was the fourth United States Navy ship, and the second commissioned one, to be named in honor of the state of Iowa. Iowa's keel was laid down on 27Jun40 at the New York Navy Yard. Nicknamed "The Big Stick," the battleship was launched on 27Aug42 sponsored by Ilo Wallace, and commissioned on 22Feb43 with Capt. John L. McCrea in command. On 24Feb43, Iowa put to sea for shakedown in Chesapeake Bay and along the Atlantic coast. She got underway on 27Aug for Naval Station Argentia, Newfoundland, to neutralize the threat of German battleship Tirpitz, which was reportedly operating in Norwegian waters. In the fall, Iowa carried President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Casablanca, French Morocco, on the first leg of the journey to the Tehran Conference in November. After the conference, the ship returned the president to the United States. As flagship of Battleship Division 7, Iowa departed the United States 2Jan44 for the Pacific Theater and the ship's combat debut in the campaign for the Marshall Islands. From 29Jan to3Feb, she supported carrier air strikes made by Rear Adm. Fredrick C. Sherman's task group against Kwajalein and Eniwetok Atolls. Iowa's next assignment was to support air strikes against the Japanese naval base at Truk, Caroline Islands. In company with other ships, Iowa was detached from the support group 16Feb44 to conduct an anti-shipping sweep around Truk to destroy enemy naval vessels escaping to the north. -

The Nautilus Institute for Security and Sustainability The corporatisation of Pine Gap Desmond Ball, Bill Robinson, Richard Tanter, and Philip Dorling Nautilus Institute for Security and Sustainability Special Report 25 June 2015 Summary The Joint Defence Facility Pine Gap, located just outside the town of Alice Springs in Central Australia and managed by the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), is one of the largest U.S. technical intelligence collection facilities in the world. The corporate presence at Pine Gap has expanded substantially in terms of both the number of companies involved and the total number of civilian contract personnel, and has changed significantly in functional terms, since the 1990s. It includes some of the major US aerospace and defence companies, such as Raytheon, Boeing, Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics, as well as major computer companies, such as IBM and Hewlett-Packard. It also includes an increasing number of ‘pure play’ companies, who focus almost entirely on contracts from the National Reconnaissance Office, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and National Security Agency (NSA), such as Scitor Corporation, SAIC and Leidos. In addition to the supply of equipment (such as satellite dishes/radomes and computers) and the provision of specialised technical services (such as satellite control and antenna alignment), these companies are now also engaged in a wide variety of management, operations and maintenance roles. While the base is nominally a ‘joint’ United States-Australian facility, virtually all of the major companies involved are U.S. corporations or their Australian branches – further emphasizing the already heavily asymmetrical character of the ‘jointness’ of Pine Gap. -

Australian Participation in the G20
Australian Participation in the G20 Xu Yi-Chong Australia is committed to active participation and policy leadership within the G20. Indeed, Prime Minister of Australia in 2007-09, Kevin Rudd, is often credited with bringing the leaders of the G20 together for their first summit in September 2008. Four years later, the public, media and the international community have taken the G20 as a given and they expect that the old powers under the umbrella of the G8 would sit down at the table to discuss urgent international issues with the emerging economies as equals. In retrospect, this may be the case. History, however, could have gone in a different direction. In 2008, many multilateral and regional venues had existed for countries to manage their common problems: on macroeconomic issues, there were the remnants of the Bretton Woods system, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank; the old power club, the Financial Stability Forum of G7, G8; the World Economic Forum (WEF); the Bank of International Settlement (BIS) of central banks, and the list goes on. With many multilateral institutions available, there were still concerns about the relevance of these institutions. The Economist commented on the G8 summit in July 2008 as all the signs showed a coming recession in many developed countries: What is the point of their discussing the oil price without Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest producer? Or waffling about the dollar without China, which holds so many American Treasury bills? Or slapping sanctions on Robert Mugabe, with no African present? Or talking about global warming, AIDS or inflation without anybody from the emerging world? Cigar smoke and ignorance are in the air.1 It became clear that, even though emerging economies, especially BRICs, drew increasing worldwide attention, many still held that the “decoupling the- ory” was more of a dream than a reality, as evidenced in 2008 when emerging economies were affected by the economic down-turns in developed countries as they started reducing their imports.
