Katie Lowe Pastoral Case Advisor Our ref: NB35/149/kl 26 April 2021 Mission and Pastoral Measure 2011 Diocese of Sheffield Benefice of Thurnscoe, Saint Helen and Saint Hilda The Bishop of Sheffield has asked us to prepare a draft Pastoral Scheme in respect of pastoral proposals affecting this benefice. I attach a copy of the draft Scheme and a glossary of terms used together with the Notice. I am sending a copy to all the statutory interested parties, as the Mission and Pastoral Measure requires, and any others with an interest in the proposals. Anyone may make representations for or against all or any part or parts of the draft Scheme (please include the reasons for your views) by post or, preferably, by email to reach me no later than midnight on Tuesday 1 June 2021. If we have not acknowledged receipt of your representation before this date, please ring or e-mail me to ensure it has been received. For administrative purposes, a petition will be classed as a single representation and we will only correspond with the sender of the petition, if known, or otherwise the first signatory for whom we can identify an address – “the primary petitioner”. If we do not receive representations against the draft Scheme, we will make the Scheme and it will come into effect as it provides. A copy of the completed Scheme will be sent to you together with a note of its effective date. If we receive any representations against the draft Scheme, we will send them, and any representations supporting the draft Scheme, to the Bishop whose views will be sought. -

The events of 2020 have created as near to a blank page for the future as our beloved Cathedral has known since its creation in 1914 (with the possible exception of 1945). Two related but separate experiences have combined to create this situation. First and foremost, of course, there has been the COVID-19 pandemic. This has affected Sheffield Cathedral much as it has affected most organisations: it has interrupted every pre-existing routine (patterns of worship, visitor welcome, enterprise activity, staff working rhythms), presenting new challenges (not least financial) and generating -

Ad Clerum: March 2020 Dear Friends I hope the season of Lent has begun profitably for you, as we seek to grow in holiness, to deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow our crucified Saviour. In my lengthy Ad Clerum issued in February, I undertook to write a monthly update, in the first week of every month. Forgive me, please, for missing the very first deadline by a few days: as many of you know I spent the first week of March in our link Diocese of Argentina, and this is the earliest opportunity I have had to write to you all since my return. But I bring you greetings from our brothers and sisters in Christ in Latin America! When I last wrote, as I explained in paragraph 3 of the summary of developments, we were early in a two month period (ie February and March), where Area Deans and Deanery Lay Chairs were facilitating local consultation in each pair of deaneries. This was being carried out with respective Deanery Mission & Pastoral Committees, Chapters, Deanery Synods and PCCs, to gather responses to both the proposed ‘mission areas’ and the proposed deployment of stipendiary oversight ministers. As I write today, that process is still ongoing — and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Area Deans and Deanery Lay Chairs for all they have done so far to facilitate this. We are looking forward to receiving responses by the end of this month. Again, when I last wrote, we had not yet announced the appointments of a new Archdeacon of Doncaster and a new Diocesan Secretary. -

A Few Words on the Readings Opportunities for Worship, Prayers
A few words on the readings Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-end. Ezekiel speaks of God’s desire for repentance. He argues that we are each responsible for our actions before God but all God wants is a repentant heart. Forgiveness comes to those who turn from their wrongdoing. Philippians 2:1-13. Paul preaches humility. Humility can be found in serving the needs of others. Christ offers us the supreme example of humility because he put aside his divinity to submit himself to human suffering. Paul’s words concerning Christ as Lord and Saviour are sometimes repeated in church as a form of creed. They are also taken up in the great hymn ‘ At the name of Jesus’. They remind us of the great debt we owe Jesus and our need to make our lives reflect all that he has done for us. Matthew 21:23-32. The religious leaders wanting to fulfil their role as guardians of the faith challenge Jesus by asking him to say by whose authority he was carrying out his actions and teachings. Jesus refers to their attitude towards John the Baptist who was considered by the people as a prophet but whom they did not recognise. Put on the spot by Jesus they refuse to reply leaving Jesus to withold his own answer. Instead he tells the parable of the two sons and invites them to answer a simple question on the parable. They are obliged to give the correct answer, namely that the son who had disobeyed in the first place repented and carried out his father’s will.
