Changes across Museums Sheffield: DCMS Project: Ancient Egypt & Sheffield Stories galleries at Weston Park Museum

Exciting changes are currently underway at Weston Park Museum. After successfully securing a bid for £187,000 from the DCMS/Wolfson Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund, two galleries at the museum will be experiencing major refurbishment. Project Manager Ayesha Heaton has updated us on the progress of the project so far: ‘We are starting to build good links with the community groups across the city that will be working with us to co-curate the new Sheffield Stories gallery, which replaces the current Treasures gallery. The displays in Sheffield Stories will change more frequently and will be co-curated by people from across the city – our initial focus will be on stories from Sheffield in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. ‘During June we welcomed several Ancient Egypt specialists to Sheffield as we continued the research for the museum’s new Ancient Egypt gallery. Dr Ashley Cooke, Senior Curator of Antiquities at National Museums Liverpool, Dr Anna Garnett, Curator at Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology and Dr Campbell Price, Curator of Egypt and Sudan at the Museum explored our Ancient Egyptian collections on display and at the store. They were very impressed with Sheffield’s collection and have been very generous in sharing their knowledge on how we can create an exceptional gallery for visitors. The new Ancient Egypt gallery will replace Arctic World, with the museum’s ever-popular mummies taking pride of place in the new space. ‘Our focus over the next couple of months will be to develop the themes and designs for the galleries, identifying objects and stories to share with visitors and of course, moving Snowy the Polar Bear into her new home in What an Earth.’ The new Ancient Egypt and Sheffield Stories galleries are due to open in spring 2020.

Proud! Telling Sheffield’s LGBT+ stories

Earlier this year Clara Morgan, Curator of Social History and Louisa Briggs, Exhibitions & Display Curator applied for funding to improve and grow the representation of the LGBT+ community in Sheffield’s collections. We were successful with our funding bid to the National Heritage Lottery Fund, and the Proud! Telling Sheffield LGBT+ stories project was born, which strives to make the city’s collection more representative of its diverse communities. Clara shares why the project is so important to Museums Sheffield’s collections: ‘The project has several different strands which explore Sheffield’s LGBT+ history, including the life of Edward Carpenter, whose 175th birthday was the 29 August this year. ‘A really important part of the project has been to recruit people from Sheffield’s LGBT+ community as co-curators. This amazing group of people have volunteered their time and shared their personal stories and thoughts to help create two new displays. At Weston Park Museum, the displays explore local LGBT+ history and contemporary life, while the Millennium Gallery the focus is on Edward Carpenter and his lasting legacy. ‘A writer and activist, Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) spent his life campaigning on a wide range of social and political issues and for over forty years formed a strong bond with the people of Sheffield. ‘Carpenter lived openly with his lover, George Merrill and his writings laid the foundation for the gay liberation movement of the twentieth century. He was also an advocate of socialism, anarchism, feminism, vegetarianism and clothes reform. ‘To celebrate Carpenter’s life we recently commissioned artist Paul Morrison to design a portrait mural of Carpenter, which is on display at Millennium Gallery. ‘Before starting the Proud! project we were very aware that the city’s collections contained very little material relating to local LGBT+ history. In the Social History collection there were a few leaflets and tickets relating to the ’s LGBT society, a t-shirt, some badges, a couple of paintings – but that was about it! ‘One of the main aims of the project has been to collect more objects that reflect the city’s LGBT+ history and to better tell the stories around them. It’s great that the display at Weston Park Museum includes so many new items lent and donated by local people. We hope that this display, and the collecting so far, will encourage more people to donate their LGBT+ related items to the city’s collections.’

Recent donations to the collections as part of the Proud! Telling Sheffield’s LGBT+ stories project include:

Rugby boots and rainbow Trans Health t-shirt. Stewards badge from Chequers Disco, laces, Donated by Sheffield organised by Sheffield Campaign for

Vulcans RUFC. Homosexuality Equality, late 1970’s – early 1980’s.

We hope you enjoyed the Friends autumn newsletter. Your membership means a lot to us and helps to ensure the museums and galleries you love can continue to thrive. Thank you.
