Verdict notwithstanding Grim ‘list’ of deaths at hands of police grows WASHINGTON, April 22, (AP): Just as the guilty verdict was about to be read in the trial of former Minneapolis po- lice offi cer Derek Chauvin, police in Ohio shot and killed a Black teenager in broad daylight during a confrontation. The shooting of Ma’Khia Bryant, 16, who was swinging a knife during a fi ght with another person in Columbus, is in some ways more representative of how Black and other people of color are killed during police encounters than the death of George Floyd, pinned to the ground by Chauvin and captured on video for all the world to see. Unlike Chauvin’s case, many killings by police involve a decision to shoot in a heated moment and are notoriously diffi cult to prosecute even when they spark grief and out- rage. Juries have tended to give offi cers the benefi t of the doubt when they claim to have acted in a life-or-death situation. While Tuesday’s conviction was hailed as a sign of progress in the fi ght for equal justice, it still leaves unanswered diffi cult questions about law enforcement’s use of force and systemic racism in policing. The ver- dict in the Chauvin case might not be quickly repeated, even as the list of those killed at the hands of police grows. Chauvin “This was something unique. The world saw what happened,” said Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill, who has examined over 100 use-of-force cases there. Coronavirus

Adds global high 314K cases Why India shattering global ‘virus’ records NEW DELHI, April 22, (AP): The world’s fastest pace of spreading infections and the highest daily increase in corona- virus cases are pushing India further into a deepening and deadly health care crisis. India is massive - it’s the world’s second-most populous country with nearly 1.4 billion people - and its size presents extraordinary challenges to fighting COVID-19. Some 2.7 million vaccine doses are given daily, but that’s still less than 10% of its people who’ve gotten their first shot. Overall, India has confirmed 15.9 million cases of infection, the second highest after the United States, and 184,657 deaths. The latest surge has driven India’s fragile health systems to the breaking point: Understaffed hospitals are overflowing with patients. Medical oxygen is in short supply. Intensive care units are full. Nearly all ventilators are in use, and the dead are piling up at crematori- ums and graveyards. How Did We Get Here? Coronavirus Despite warnings and advice that precautions were needed, authorities were unprepared for the magnitude of the surge, said K Srinath Reddy, president of the Public Health Foundation of India. Elections How long does protection from virus vaccines last? Critics have pointed to the government deciding to not pause Hindu religious festivals or elections, and experts say that these may have exacerbated the surge. “Authorities across India, without exception, put public ‘COVID jab in pregnancy is safe’ health priorities on the back burner,” Reddy said. ‘Cartoon Saloon’ How Irish town became animation powerhouse By Jake Coyle he medieval town of Kilkenny in the southeast of TIreland is an unlikely home for a perennial Oscar contender. But there, among cathedral spires and cas- tle parapets, the animation studio Cartoon Saloon has carved out a factory of hand-drawn artistry and local folklore that has persisted and flourished well beyond its creators’ expectations. When Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart, directors of the enchanting Oscar-nominee “Wolfwalkers,” met growing up in Kilkenny — or even after they fi nished college and were setting out as animators — any suc- cess seemed sure to be found in typical entertainment epicenters like London, New York or Los Angeles. Instead, they decided to stay in Kilkenny with the mission of making a single fi lm. (It turned out to be 2009’s Oscar-nominated “The Secret of Kells”.) Their beginning staff of 12 worked out of an old orphanage. Twelves years lat- er, there are nearly 400 work- ing for Cartoon Saloon and their sister studio, Lighthouse Studios, in the heart of Kilken- ny.
