Ansari said he had paid over Rs 33 lakh in about six quarter-ly installments of Rs 5,60,594 each on self-assessment under the amnesty scheme announced by the government. His persistent request to the authorities to imple- ment the Supreme Court orders for fresh assess¬ment also did not bear fruit, he said, adding they attached our properties with the help of two companies of CRPF and without any prior notice. Ansari said he would launch contempt proceedings against the authorities. When contacted, the deputy commissioner, sales tax (recovery), Mushtaq Ahmad, told Observer News Service late this evening An- sari Motors had run into arrears of sales tax for the period from 1988- 89 to 1993-94 to the extent of Rs 1.41 crore on the basis of assessment in which the company had cooperated. As they did not show any positive response, the department attached the properties during an operation carried out between noon and 2 pm today. He said Abid Ansari,who was present in the premises, identified the portions belonging to Ansari Motors on the basis of the documents with which he was confronted. He de- nied this period of sales tax assessment was the subject of any court proceedings. Mushtaq said the department had assessed an¬other Rs 13 crore as sales tax arrears for the period 1994-95 to 1996-97. However, the amount was based on an ex-parte assessment against which the company had approached the Supreme Court. In March this year, he said, the apex court had directed de-novo (afresh) as- sessment and restoration of its CST/GST registration. It also asked the firm to deposit Rs 50 lakh in two installments.
