Neale and others A Reading: Jacob and the Angel Genesis 32:22-33 The same night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two maids, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. He took them and sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that he had. Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob?s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. Then he said, ?Let me go, for the day is breaking.? But Jacob said, ?I will not let you go, unless you bless me.? So he said to him, ?What is your name?? And he said, ?Jacob.? Then the man said, ?You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have prevailed.? Then Jacob asked him, ?Please tell me your name.? But he said, ?Why is it that you ask my name?? And there he blessed him. So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, ?For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved.? The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip. Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the thigh muscle that is on the hip socket, because he struck Jacob on the hip socket at the thigh muscle.

A Reading: Gabriel and Mary Luke 1:26-38 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin?s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, ?Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.? But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, ?Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.? Mary said to the angel, ?How can this be, since I am a virgin?? The angel said to her, ?The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.? Then Mary said, ?Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.? Then the angel departed from her. Blessed are you Music (Op. 2 No. 2) by Edward Elgar (1857-1934) Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum, Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you, benedicta tu in mulieribus, blessed are you among women, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus. and blessed if the fruit of your womb, Jesus. A Reading: Michael and the Dragon Revelation 12:1-10 A great portent appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant and was crying out in birthpangs, in the agony of giving birth. Then another portent appeared in heaven: a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. Then the dragon stood before the woman who was about to bear a child, so that he might devour her child as soon as it was born. And she gave birth to a son, a male child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron. But her child was snatched away and taken to God and to his throne; and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, so that there she can be nourished for one thousand two hundred sixty days. And war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world? he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming, ?Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.

Give ear to our voice Music by John Abdenour (b. 1962) A Sequence for St. Michael, which Alcuin wrote for the Emperor Charles MICHAEL, Archangel Of the King of Kings, Give ear to our voices. We acknowledge thee to be the Prince of the citizens of heaven : And at thy prayer God sends His angels unto men, That the enemy with cunning craft shall not prevail To do the hurt he craves To weary men. Yea, thou hast the dominion of perpetual Paradise, And ever do the holy angels honour thee. Thou wert seen in the Temple of God, A censer of gold in thy hands, And the smoke of it fragrant with spices Rose up till it came before God. Thou with strong hand didst smite the cruel dragon, And many souls didst rescue from his jaws. Then was there a great silence in heaven, And a thousand thousand saying "Glory to the Lord King.? Hear us, Michael, Great archangel, Come down from thy high seat, To bring us the strength of God, And the lightening of His mercy. And do thou, Gabriel, Lay low our foes, And thou, Raphael, Heal our sick, Purge our disease, ease thou our pain, And give us to share In the joys of the blessed. Alcuin (735-804); translated by Helen Waddell (1889-1965), alt.

A Reading: Holy, holy, holy Isaiah 6:1-8 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: ?Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.? The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: ?Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!? Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: ?Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.? Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ?Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?? And I said, ?Here am I; send me!?

A Reading: George and Clarence From It's a Wonderful Life (1946) Gazing at Clarence, George asked, ?Look, who are you?? ?I told you, George,? Clarence replied, ?I?m your guardian angel.? ?Yeah, yeah, I know. You told me that.? George poked Clarence in the chest to make sure he was real. ?What else are you? Are you a hypnotist?? ?No, of course not.? ?Well then why am I seeing all these strange things here?? ?Don?t you understand, George? It?s because you were not born . . .? ?Well if I wasn?t born, who am I?? ?You?re nobody. You have no identity.? ?What do you mean, no identity? My name?s George Bailey . . .? ?There is no George Bailey. You have no papers, no cards, no driver?s license, no 4F card, no insurance policy . . .? George rifled his clothes fruitlessly. ?They?re not there either.? ?What?? ?Zuzu?s petals.? And Zuzu?s petals had indeed vanished. Clarence continued, ?You?ve been given a great gift, George, a chance to see what the world would be like without you.? ?Now wait a minute here,? George shook his head to clear it. ?This is some sort of a funny dream I?m having. So long, mister, I?m going home.? ?Home?? queried Clarence, ?What home?? ?Aw shut up! Cut it out! You?re crazy! That?s what I think. You?re screwy. You?re driving me crazy too ? I?m seeing things here. I?m going home and see my wife and family. You understand that? And I?m going home alone.? George stalked off to discover that his wife and family did not exist. Clarence glanced heavenward. ?How am I doing, Joseph? Thanks! No I didn?t have a drink!?
