N E W S Cunard Unveils Expanded Program of 2020 Summer Voyages N E W S Cunard Unveils Expanded Program of 2020 Summer Voyages Eight brand new port calls for the Cunard fleet, more Transatlantic Crossings, and new Japan itineraries on the horizon for Cunard Early booking benefits offer up to $1,000 Onboard Credit on select itineraries when booked by November 30, 2019 Voyages on sale for Cunard World Club Members starting September 24, 2018 and for first-time guests on September 25, 2018 VALENCIA, Calif., September 13, 2018 – Luxury cruise line Cunard has announced its expanded voyage program for the remainder of 2020, including new voyages to the Norwegian Fjords, Japan and Australia. Guests will have the opportunity to experience true luxury and relaxation on Cunard’s iconic ships – Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria – while traveling around the world. Cunard will continue many of its classic voyages, including its signature Transatlantic Crossing between New York and London, while adding new itineraries in Western Europe and Southeast Asia. Whether choosing a three-night short break or a 19-night Grand Voyage, Cunard guests will enjoy a blend of iconic, world-class cities and lesser- known, charming destinations. In total, the Cunard fleet will travel over 169,000 nautical miles with calls at 110 destinations in 34 different countries, with eight maiden calls including Bornholm, Denmark; Nordfjordeid, Norway; Ringaskiddy, Ireland; Jakarta, Indonesia; as well as Kurhiro, Ishigaki and Tokyo, Japan. Cunard will also offer a selection of two-night calls in major cities including Barcelona, Hong Kong and Québec and late evening departures which allow guests more time in port for deeper exploration in places such as Juneau, Alaska, Aomori, Japan , Malaga, Spain, and Tromsø, Norway. “2020 represents the most expansive deployment of Cunard ships ever,” said Josh Leibowitz, SVP Cunard North America. “In addition to visiting incredible destinations such as Norway, Japan, and Asia, we are excited to offer guests longer time in port to enjoy these iconic destinations. Nearly 90% of all port calls on voyages in Summer 2020 are in port 10 hours or longer.” Queen Mary 2 Flagship ocean liner Queen Mary 2 will continue to be the only ship to offer regularly-scheduled service between New York and London, making 19 7- to 8-night Transatlantic Crossings from April through December in 2020. Voyage itineraries range from seven to 21 nights and include port calls in Canada, Iceland, Scotland and Le Havre, France, along with overnight calls in Québec and Reykjavik and evening departures in Boston and Halifax. Queen Mary 2 will also sail two Norwegian Fjords voyages ranging from seven to 25 nights and five Western European voyages for three to five nights. Queen Mary 2 voyage highlights include: Nine 14- to 15-night Transaltantic Crossings roundtrip from either New York or London Two 21-night sailings with calls to Canada, Iceland and Scotland – one sailing roundtrip from New York, the other roundtrip from London Fourth of July seven-night Independence Day cruise roundtrip from New York Four seven-night voyages between New York and Québec Eight 14-night New England & Canada voyages which begin and end in ports of New York, Québec, Southampton or Le Havre Queen Elizabeth Continuing with the exciting new voyage types first introduced in 2019, Queen Elizabeth, will continue to roam among far-flung and beloved destinations to bring our guests a taste of the exotic in Fall 2020. Starting in September, Queen Elizabeth will embark on three roundtrip voyages from Tokyo as well as Grand Voyages that cover the North Pacific, East Asia and Australia. These can be taken as shorter individual voyages from two to 18-nights, or grouped together into longer combinations of up to 40 nights, to satisfy any discerning guest’s need for exploration. Queen Elizabeth highlights include: Five Roundtrip Tokyo itineraries with varying lengths and destinations Five Southeast Asia voyages, ranging from seven to 23 nights Queen Victoria Cunard’s Queen Victoria will return to Southampton in early spring after embarking on a circumnavigation of South America. She will continue to sail Northern Europe itineraries in addition to seven shorter Western Europe voyages ranging from two to seven nights. She will make seven maiden calls with overnight stays in the major cities of Amsterdam, Barcelona, Reykjavik and St. Petersburg, and evening departures in Bodo, Narvik and Tromsø, Norway, Dublin, Ireland, Hamburg, Germany, Malaga, Spain, and Rotterdam, Netherlands.     Being Lord Grantham: Aristocratic Brand Heritage and the Cunard Transatlantic Crossing 1 Highclere Castle as Downton Abbey (Photo by Gill Griffin) By Bradford Hudson During the early 1920s, the Earl of Grantham traveled from England to the United States. The British aristocrat would appear as a character witness for his American brother-in-law, who was a defendant in a trial related to the notorious Teapot Dome political scandal. Naturally he chose to travel aboard a British ship operated by the oldest and most prestigious transatlantic steamship company, the Cunard Line. Befitting his privileged status, Lord Grantham was accompanied by a valet from the extensive staff employed at his manor house, who would attend to any personal needs such as handling baggage or assistance with dressing. Aboard the great vessel, which resembled a fine hotel more than a ship, passengers were assigned to accommodations and dining facilities in one of three different classes of service. Ostensibly the level of luxury was determined solely by price, but the class system also reflected a subtle degree of social status. Guests in the upper classes dressed formally for dinner, with men wearing white or black tie and women wearing ball gowns. Those who had served in the military or diplomatic service sometimes wore their medals or other decorations. Passengers enjoyed elaborate menu items such as chateaubriand and oysters Rockefeller, served in formal style by waiters in traditional livery. The décor throughout the vessel resembled a private club in London or an English country manor house, with ubiquitous references to the British monarchy and empire.

    THE QUEEN MARY 2 Introduction The Queen Mary 2 (QM2) is the world’s biggest cruise ship. It is 1,132 feet long (147 feet longer than the Eiffel Tower is high) and it weighs 150,000 gross tons. The vessel will carry 1,253 crew and 2,620 passengers and will be based at Southampton. The total cost of QM2’s construction was approximately £550 million. The owners of the cruiser are Carnival through their Cunard brand. The QM2 was built by the French engineering group Alstom over a period of two years at Alstom Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard at St Nazaire in western France. The QM2 was officially launched on the 8th January 2004. The naval architect for QM2 was Stephen Payne. He played a large role in the success of the project and it should be noted that his responsibilities went beyond those that would normally rest with a Naval Architect. After designing the ship he acted as the pre-construction Project Manager before being promoted to Director of Project Management for this ship and others Carnival had under construction at the time. His endeavours have recently earned him recognition in the form of an OBE. He accepted this award “as recognition of the whole team’s effort that contributed to such a wonderful result”. The Royal Academy of Engineering has also awarded him a “special” prize in January 2006 for his work related with QM2.
