Earls Court was once a rural area, covered with green fields and market gardens. The Saxon Thegn Edwin was the lord there before the Norman Conquest. For over 500 years the land, part of the ancient manor of Kensington, was under the lordship of the Vere family, the Earls of Oxford and descendants of Aubrey de Vere I, who held the manor of Geoffrey de Montbray, bishop of Coutances, in Domesday Book in 1086. By 1095, his tenure had been converted, and he held Kensington directly from the crown. A church had been constructed there by 1104.The earls held their manorial court where Old Manor Yard is now, just by the London Underground station. Earls Court Farm is visible on Greenwood's map of London in 1827.
There are some impressive examples of early- to mid-Victorian architecture in the Earls Court ward. Gardens such as Bramham Gardens and Courtfield Gardens are beautiful traditional residential squares with many imposing properties fronting onto them and in the case of Courtfield Gardens, traditional cast iron railings around the enclosed gardens have just been restored (the originals were removed in 1940 for scrap iron during World War 2) creating a more authentic Victorian ambience. Further West, Nevern Square and Philbeach Gardens are built around impressive formal garden settings (access limited to key holding residents). Collingham Road and Harrington Road, also have some unique buildings, many of them very large and currently used as Embassies.
A little further north, just south of the Cromwell Road, the tranquil conservation area comprising Childs Place, Kenway Road, Wallgrave Road and Redfield Lane contains fine examples of more modest terraced townhouses painted in pastel shades in a very picturesque setting with some fine floral displays. Hidden in the middle of this area is London's smallest communal garden, "Providence Patch" built on the site of former stables serving the surrounding houses, which were destroyed by a bomb in 1941. A glimpse of the (private) gardens can be seen via the original stable entrance way in Wallgrave Road. Earls Court is within easy walking distance of High Street Kensington, Holland Park, Kensington Gardens/Hyde Park, the Royal Albert Hall, Imperial College, the Natural History, Science and Victoria and Albert Museums

CHECK-OUT On the day you check-out be sure to turn everything off and close all windows securely. Make sure you have packed all your belongings. Once ready to vacate leave the keys together inside the apartment then shut the door firmly behind you making sure it is closed properly.
NOISE ALERT! Sound carries in London flats. Please be respectful and don’t play the TV or music loudly. Please don’t use the washing machine after 9 pm. Please be gentle with the front door to avoid slamming. Please don’t roll luggage at night or too early on the floor. Have your luggage ready in the hallway to avoid disturbing the neighbours in the morning.

The building is very secure and without the keys you will not be able to enter the apartment. Please feel free to use any food in the cupboards but replace anything you finish! Should anything break or be damaged in any way during your stay just let us know. When checking out, please leave the keys inside the apartment and close the door behind you. Please be aware of noise in the shared-space of the building, and shut the door quietly Don’t forget to take your key when you Entryphone buzzes when someone presses front door bell. Press Top button to speak to them and gobottom out. to let them in.
The Telephone and International Calls The phone will allow you to make local calls —landlines only— Otherwise (for international calls, and for mobiles), please use a phone card. The phone number for the apartment is +44 207 373 0624. The apartment also has a fax machine which can be used by guests. The number is + 44 207 244 0694.
Television/Cable/DVD Player
To watch TV, first turn on the TV with the corresponding remote by pressing any number. This will only work if the TV is in standby mode– if nothing happens, press the power button on the TV first and try again. You may choose to leave the TV in standby mode. To use the DVD player you will need to turn it on by pressing the standby button on the Toshiba remote or the standby button on the DVD player. You will just need to put the DVD in the player and it will play automatically. To return to your normal stations you will just need to turn the DVD off by pressing the standby button again. The DVD box is under the television and the control is sitting on top of it. All further instructions can be found in the book in the black file. (Polite request - if you change letterbox to full screen on the television it would be helpful if you could return it to its original after you have seen the programme, because it distorts the picture somewhat when you watch a film in a format for which it was not intended - the faces get squashed a bit! )
High Speed Internet Access
The flat is equipped with Wifi. Access is in the sitting room where the Hub is located on top of the ornamental fire.
The internet is always ON and the information is written in the black file in the hall under internet. For the Wifi you click on the airport icon and choose: BTHomeHub2-T2QF The password is : e5e7c6f46d

Working the Oven/Stove
The stove is gas and you press the button on the left side while turning the gas dial on for the gas ring you want. The same with the grill and the oven.
It may take a few seconds before the fire ignites so be sure that the fire is lit before you take your finger off the gas button especially the oven which takes longer to ignite
Washer Load the clothes into the machine and close the door. Next put the laundry detergent in the left hand drawer compartment or the right hand compartment for pre wash. There are instructions in the booklet located on the wall as well as on the dials of the washer.
Do not use too much liquid or powder! These machines are very efficient and a small amount is better for your clothing, the environment and the machine.
If you prefer to take your washing to a launderette there is “Suds” just near the flat who will do a service wash for you.
Boiler System - in Kitchen The boiler is usually always on. The lower front of the boiler lifts down to view the dials. There should be no need to change anything.
Should there be no hot water it is possible that there is low pressure. If so there will be an error signal E1— E19 . The pressure gauge will show 0.5 or less.
To top up the pressure look directly under the boiler to the right—you will see 2 black dials/knobs that are located towards the front in a horizontal position one on the left and one on the right. Turn one anti-clockwise until it is fully opened then turn the other one anti-clockwise quite soon you will hear water coming into the system—watch the pressure gauge and when it reaches the middle of the 1 (in the green block) turn that knob to close it. Then close the first knob.
Heating System
The hot water is always ON. The dial for both the hot water and the radiator can be switched off or on the boiler. The main thermostat for controlling the heating is located in the hallway and can be turned down or up—the readings are in centigrade. In winter 21-25 is a normal setting.
The apartment will warm up in 5 minutes. (The individual radiators can be turned off at the bottom of the radiators as well). Please make sure you are turning the heating knob off at the right side of the radiators if you do, and not the water taps on the left side.)
Waste and Recycling There are different garbage bins, depending on what you have to discard.
Black bags are for food trash and orange /transparent bags are for recycling (see list) Both can be found in the hall desk, There are kitchen supplies, telephone books and hoover bags. Bin bags should be placed downstairs in the basement dustbin room for collection.
ORANGE / TRANSPARENT BAGS: Glass bottles, jars Tins Plastic and plastic bottles, Paper , newspapers magazines etc Please be sure to separate your Rubbish and recycling are collected garbage. Mondays and Thursdays from 7.00am in the morning
Please make sure not to dump any waste outside the building or in the street. All waste should be left in the required area prior to collection.
Tube Station (Subway) There are two c lose tube stations, Earls Court on the Piccadilly, District and Central line or West Brompton District and overland train . To reach Earls Court turn right out of the building and walk straight, cross Warwick Street and follow the road which becomes Penywern Road then turn left on the main road: Earls Court road. To get to West Brompton station turn left out of the building and walk to the end of the street, then turn right on Old Brompton Road and cross the road—the station is a little on the right. See map pages 8 and 9.
Tips for your London Holiday –Oyster Card
Buy an “Oyster” card from any small grocery store—it costs £5 fore the card and then you buy a certain amount of credit on it—this allows you to have cheaper fares throughout London on the tube and buses. You can top up the credits in any tube station as you need it. The London tube is a very efficient way to Or you can opt for a “Day Travel Card” for zones 1 &2 this costs about £6.50 and allows get around London you unlimited usage in the zones you stipulate for a day.
Food, Wine and a Whole lot more
Earls Court Road and Old Brompton Road are full of banks, eateries ranging from sushi, pizza to pub meals and shops of every description. We have left the cards of some of our preferred restaurants in the Black File.
On Earls Court Road we recommend Marks and Spencers for a good food supermarket. There is also Somerfields and a small Sainburys. There is a huge Tesco at the top Of Warick Road.
