NOOK Book. Andrea di Robilant was born in and educated at , where he specialized in international affairs. He lives in . In the beginning it was just a lovely scented pink rose that grew wild in the woods on land on the Venetian mainland that had once belonged to my family. This mysterious rose had attracted the curiosity of a few local residents, but no one could figure out what it was or where it came from. Q: Would you describe this rose and what makes it so charming and special among roses? A: It is a shrub with a lovely silvery pink rose, clearly an old Chinese rose, semi-double, very sturdy and exceptionally fragrant. Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside smells of raspberries and nectarines. I planted one in my garden. It blooms all year round very profusely and the flowers get prettier and fuller every year. It looks like an Old Blush but the blooms are more beautiful and much more scented. Q: The book reads as if a detective story, full of labyrinths, stops and starts, false leads, and occasional happy surprises. Did you feel like a detective? A: Well, more like a reporter. Which is what I have been all my life. Initially I thought of it as an interesting piece of news. But it was never a straight line. Mostly twists and turns that led me to interesting people, charming gardens, unexpected places. And every time I thought I had reached a dead end someone appeared on my path to get me going again. Q: What, if anything did you know about roses before you began this book? I certainly never thought of myself as a gardener. Poking around old roses I often felt like an impostor as I was often with people who knew a great deal about roses. I have Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside to love roses and now I know a little bit about them — what I learned in the course of a year. So not much at all, really. And when I am asked to talk to rosarians I still feel like an impostor! Q: It seems that most of the interesting roses come from China originally and then spread to the West through England and France. Is it a cultural or artistic thing or was it the climate, and is that even accurate to say? A: The arrival of Chinese roses in Europe in the eighteenth century caused a revolution in the world of roses. Chinese roses brought remontancy — repeat flowering — and colors never seen before, including red and yellow. So you can imagine the impact these roses had once they were crossed with European species and varieties. There was a big bang effect. A hybridization frenzy took over, especially in nineteenth century France, and the staid old world of roses exploded in many directions. Q: Although this started for you as a light-hearted quest, you learned a great deal from several of the rose-o-philes you met along the way. Can you talk about the discoveries you enjoyed or some of the fascinating people you met? A: I have to say that the biggest thrill was to spend time in the garden of Eleonora Garlant and her husband Valentino. It is a rustic rose garden of great beauty and sophistication. Eleonora is entirely self-taught and had never seen a rose garden or a formal garden before she started planting her roses around her vegetable plots. She has created such a perfect environment for roses that new varieties grow spontaneously in her garden: as many as five or six new roses come to life there every year. I was taken by the notion that her garden was a fountainhead of roses in a world of rapidly diminishing biodiversity. What is it that draws you to these subjects? Are you a romantic? I suppose I have a romantic sensibility within a classical frame of mind. Goethe is my man. Certainly the Goethe of Italian Journey. And I have always been a traveler. And a journalist. So: a Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside romantic on a quest. That sums it up. Home 1 Books 2. Read an excerpt of this book! Add to Wishlist. Sign in to Purchase Instantly. A charming account of the author's quest to Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside an anonymous but beautiful "lost" rose growing on his family's old estate. Full of delightful facts on the history and propagation of the rose, plenty to interest any rose fancier, novice or long-standing expert. The author makes roses come alive, inspires and invites the reader to view them through his eyes, as individual personalities, each unique with a history to match. She did not know who the parent roses were, Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside did she seem particularly interested. When I saw the 'Empress Josephine' spread out against Elenora's corner pergola, I inevitably conjured up the real Josephine. And so it was with the other roses arrayed around it. I was no longer simply walking along a path looking at the roses on display. I had stepped into a crowded, lively room filled with roses that were Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside at me. A magical place born of love and intuition rather than any formal design. A place I would truly love to visit and ramble through. This book is a lovely blend of mystery, memoir, history, and personal quest. It's highly informative but never dry, constantly delightful. Recommended for any gardener or rose enthusiast. The quality of this book is almost unparalleled. Simply gorgeous. The cover is beautiful and it was the main reason I purchased this book more on that below. The pages are so thick I often thought I accidentally turned more than one page at a time. The illustrations, by Nina Fuga, are outstanding! I want to see more books like this!!! If you plan on getting this book and you don't have a book marker please get one. Do no Wow this book! Do not dog ear this book! And now on to the actual book. As I mentioned I purchased this book pretty much because of the cover. Pink and green with roses. Pretty much everything in my house is shabby chic and I honestly thought this would go quite nicely. I have the opposite of a green thumb and I care nothing about changing that so I didn't think this book would interest me. Boy was I wrong. In a nut shell this book was about one person's quest to identify an old rose. Does that sound boring? Guess what? It is not! I was mesmerized. This was one part history, one part geography, one part botany and one part biography. And that my friends is the making of a perfect book! View all 4 comments. Apr 23, Jaylia3 rated it it was amazing. His grandmother got her interest in roses from Josephine Bonaparte, a dear friend, and the book is rich with fascinating rose related history stories about Josephine and other rose aficionados from 18th and 19th century Europe, a time when collectors roamed the world looking for the loveliest flowers. Readers are also introduced to Eleonora Garlant and her husband Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside, a charming Italian couple who are spending their retirement tending to the thousands of rose varieties they have planted on their property. I read an advanced review copy of this book so the illustrations, while beautiful, are black and white, but in the book for sale the watercolor sketches will be in full color and that should be breathtaking. The author has also written several other books including Lucia: A Venetian Life in the Age of Napoleon, a biography of his great-great-great-great grandmother, which based on what I learned of her in this volume I am eager to read. I know nothing about roses and only have the most passing knowledge and interest in plants, and yet I found this book captivating. The history and anecdotes behind some of Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside roses is so interesting and the people Andrea meets along the way are as enchanting as the roses they cultivate. Dec 01, Patricia rated it really liked it Shelves: botany-garden-nature. Fun vicarious trip through some well-stocked gardens and enjoyable meetings with rose obsessives. The little bit of information about the original China roses was fascinating. Jul 24, Valerie rated it it was amazing. Fascinating read about the history of roses. Jan 28, Ruth rated it liked it. I was very excited when I received this book from the Goodreads giveaway contest. The book was described as an adventure in the Venetian countryside, so I was looking forward to reading something a little bit more like "Under the Tuscan Sun", so I was a little bit disappointed when the writers idea of adventure differed a bit from my idea of adventure. The book was well written, but was kind of a cross between a documentary, and a rose catalogue. I felt like the book became a little bogged down i I was very excited when I received this book from the Goodreads giveaway contest. I felt like the book became a little bogged down in all the latin names of roses, and all of the detailed descriptions of the many different types Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside roses. I enjoyed some of the characters that the writer encountered during his quest to find the origins of the "Moceniga" Rose. After reading this book, Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside think I would be more interested in reading the book that he wrote about his great, great, great grandmother, Lucia, and her friendship with Empress Josephine of France, but I did not get the same rush of adventure from Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside this book. I probably would really enjoy taking a trip and visiting some of the gardens that the author described in this book, and also seeing how the illustrations would look in full color as the edition that I received was not priinted in full color. Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside by Andrea di Robilant

It's no exaggeration to say this is a lovely little book, evoking the heady scents and exquisite colors of antique roses as Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside author recounts his quest to learn the identity of the delicate pink rose, smelling of raspberries and peaches, that grows wild all over his family's now abandoned country estate near Venice. That rose was brought to Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside from France by the author's great-great-great-great grandmother, though the rose's original ancestry is in China. Readers are also introduced to Eleonora Garlant and her husband Vincent, a charming Italian couple who are spending their retirement tending to the thousands of rose varieties they have planted Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside their property. I read an advanced review copy of this book so the illustrations, while beautiful, are black and white, but in the book for sale the watercolor sketches will be in full color and that should be breathtaking. The author has also written several other books including Lucia: A Venetian Life in the Age of Napoleona biography of his great-great-great-great grandmother, which based on what I learned of her in this volume I am eager to read. An utterly delightful book. I love old roses, and, since the day, many years ago, when I looked up 'Souvenir de Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside and discovered its story I have been enchanted by the romance of their names. I was hooked from the start by the voyage of discovery, leading the author to a variety of interesting and out of the way places in parts of Italy largely unknown by outsiders. Old Roses and the Napoleonic court made an irresistible combination. The people di Robilant met on this journey were great characters, and described with such warmth and charm. The author learned much about old roses on his journey, and so did I. It was such a joy to learn at the end that, against all the odds, the Rosa moceniga was registered. The only downside is that I now want it for my own garden, and it appears not to be commercially available. Here at Walmart.
