FOCUS ON OUR LINKED DIOCESE – THE DIOCESE OF LEICESTER, ENGLAND What is a Linked Diocese? The Lambeth Conference (the decennial assembly of bishops of the Anglican Communion convened by the Archbishop of Canterbury), declared in 1998 that “the time has come for significant new initiatives in encouraging all dioceses to develop companion relationships across provincial boundaries, as part of the process of developing the cross-cultural nature of the Communion.” The bishops resolved that by the next Conference, every diocese should have made “a serious effort to identify one or more dioceses as a companion, in formal and informal ways.” As bishops, clergy and lay people meet and find a commonality in mission and purpose, this often develops into a mutual sharing together of resources. The Diocese of Wyoming has a Linked Partnership among five Anglican Communion dioceses on four continents. The links are formed and are strongly based on relationships. This week, we want to focus on one - the Diocese of Leicester, England. Wyoming and Leicester Pioneers with Bishop Martyn Snow The recent trip of our 10 Seed Pioneers for Fresh Expressions of Church to be embedded in a variety of Fresh Expressions experiences and learning laboratories is one such result of the linked relationship with the Diocese of Leicester. The Diocese of Leicester (pronounced Lester), is located in central England approximately 2.5 hours northwest of London. It is surrounded by the County of Leicestershire (pronounced Lestersure). In Leicester City, no one ethnic group is in the majority, with 45% white and 28% Indian being the largest ethnic groups. 33% of the city population identify as Christian. The surrounding county is both more white (85%) and more Christian (60%). * There are 320 established churches in the Diocese with 18,450 regular worshipers. The Diocese of Leicester received recent fame when the remains of King Richard III were discovered in a nearby parking lot and reinterred in the Cathedral in 2015.
