Giffoni Film Festival, the most important film festival for kids is back again, stronger than ever from 18 to 31 July 2010 . “A miracle once more. – says Claudio Gubitosi , director and creator of the festival – the driving force of Giffoni, the Energy it produces , the desire of a smile, love, discovery, participation and the desire of being protagonists are all clear elements of the 40th Giffoni Film Festival. Fourteen intense days, full of moments of reflection but also amusement. This is how we present ourselves to the national and international attention aware of the importance of our job in representing the world an life of new generations. The films we suggest are the more and more aware and distributed in seven sections, 3000 jurors from 3 to 23 years, film premieres form important majors, Italian talent and A-list international stars, lots of music and attention to social, environmental and human issues. A complex programme where you can find our heart and passion. We have therefore accepted all the challenges, acting and reacting in times of great confusion in which culture, entertainment and art, real National pride and heritage on a whole, are forced to cry out a feeling of uneasiness. Giffoni has demonstrated, and Today more than ever this is true to be a great creator and generator of resources i.e. creative, human and social, attracting clever minds and it has also demonstrated it is an event which can be exported anywhere. The great cohesion with the Campania Region which is our most important supporter is stronger than ever. This is the time when choices need to be made. The Campania region has chosen and I am sure that the complexities of its cultural excellence will be supported and valued more than ever as fundamental primary resources. Giffoni wishes, therefore, to bring forth at its best the quality of the cultural offer from its territory, with the aid of the Salerno Province, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage within the European and extra-European context”. THE THEME LOVE will be the thin white line and theme of the Festival this year . In all its various facets, this feeling will be the focus around which all discussion, meetings, and screenings will revolve. THE JURIES The films, as every year, will be judged by the juries real heart and soul of the Festival, which this year are made up of 3000 kids (200 more than last year) from 43 Countries, aged between 3 and 23. The jurors come from all the 5 continents, from countries like Israel, Palestine, Jordan, India, Nigeria, South Africa, Lithuania, etc. This year will also see for the first time the participation of 8 new Countries: Syria, Turkey, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Lithuania, Croatia, Uzbekistan and Honduras. THE FILMS The fourteen days of the festival will be divided into two parts: the first week (from 18 to 23 July) for children from 3 to 12 years, and a second (from 23 to 31 July) for youth aged from 13 to 23. Children and youth will see and judge the 162 films including feature films and short films in competition and out of competition. The competitive sections are 7: Elements +3 (3-5 years), Elements +6 (6-9 years), Elements +10 (10-12 years), Generator +13 (13-15 years), Generator +16 (16-18 years), Sguardi Inquieti/Troubled Gaze (university students + adults), MyGiffoni (section dedicated to films produced by schools). There are 5 non competitive sections : Comizi d’Amore/Love Speeches (Italian love films in collaboration with the Cineteca Nazionale/National film library), Reload/Parental Control (the best children and teens flicks distributed in italian cinemas in 2009/2010), Shorts of Love (short animated films on Love), Diritto D’Amore/Right to Love (shorts on human rights, in collaboration with Amnesty International) and Verso Sud/Heading South (shorts produced by young Italian filmmakers). THEMES OF FILMS IN COMPETITION Love, showing its universality, is always there in the sections ELEMENTS +6 and ELEMENTS +10 . Love and friendship overcome all religious, social, cultural differences all over the world. In I am Kalam, set in India, a prince and a poor boy become friends while in the background there’s a charming and wonderful mansion turned into a resort. In Harun, Harun is a Muslim child who is accepted by a group of Hindu children. In Japan, in the heartbreaking Snow Prince a poor kid is the beloved childhood friend of a wealthy girl despite her father’s opposition. In Northern Europe Karla ( Karla and Jonas ) must help troubled kid Jonas, who lives in a care home. While in the USA ( The Perfect Game ) a young talented Mexican baseball team, will have to face bravely prejudice and hostility. Friendship enables young, rich but disabled Indonesian kid Garuda help his orphan friend become a champion. Bizarre Lola could definitely do with a friend to play with in ( Here Comes Lola ). In Rafiki , friendship helps a little girl stay in Denmark and not go back to her own Country. in East End Angels a group of feisty little angels will have to stand up for the family of their middle Eastern friend accused of drug smuggling. In The Indian the hero will have to deal with his own origin in order to fully understand the love of his adoptive parents despite the birth of a natural child. Brotherly love keeps the young knights together in Little Knights’ Tale . In The Crocodiles Strike Back family love and friendship in which the group of the crocodiles investigate to understand the true causes that have led to the closing down of the factory in which their parents work. While a furry and agile friend will help Freddie in Storm , come to terms with loneliness after losing his mother and find a new balance with his beloved father. Magic is in the air in the fairytale Magic Silver where we will meet gnomes and learn about their secrets and where a princess and her best friend will have to face the dangerous world of men. Parents don’t love their children anymore. This is the sad and final verdict that stems out from the selection (and from many other films which didn’t make it to the festival) in the section GENERATOR +13 . As simplified as it may sound it is very interesting how in almost all the films parents seem to think more about themselves letting their children derange. For instance in Swedish film Sebbe a mother refuses to take care of her child as she is tired of being a single parent. In New Zealander Boy , a young kid must look after his own house, his little brother and himself as his mother has died and his father who hangs around all day long has abandoned them. In the French Oscar et la Dame Rose the situation is a little bit more complicated: The parents cannot come to terms with the tragedy of their cancer strike child and for this reason end up running away from him fleeing the pain he embodies. In Brazilian O Contador de histórias degradation and pain in the Brazilian favela. The life in a poor South African village is full of drama as a clever girl must fight hard to come to terms with the loss of her father and her mother’s escape (who has aids and who for this reason must leave her daughter to face shame and disapproval from the entire community) In the half South African and half German film: Life Above All . Another troubled relationship between an adolescent and a mother is told in a more light-hearted way and in a completely different context. in Canadian flick Le Journal D’Aurélie Laflamme . The lack of a father and the troubled relationship between a girl and her mother. In French kolossal La Rafle , starring Jean Reno and Melanie Laurent Nazi atrocities and deportation of the Jews in occupied and collaborationist Paris parents are ready to face anything as long as their most loved and cherished treasure in not taken away from them: their children. The story is told and seen through the eyes of children who lost everything in the shame of the concentration camps during the atrocious war.
