Little River Boat Ramp from Anderson, Travel West on Hwy Little River Sumter National Forest U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service Boat Ramp Southern Region May 2010 Fees: None Located on Little River in the western part of the Long Cane Ranger District, Little River Boat Ramp From Anderson, travel west on Hwy. 28 provides access to some of the finest fishing along the Directions: to the four-way stop in Abbeville. Turn right and travel backwaters of Clark Hill Reservoir. 3.3 miles to the intersection of Hwy. 28 and Hwy. 72. Continue on Hwy. 28 for 11.7 miles. Turn right onto A specially designed boat ramp, which is level and Richey Road (S 33-25), and travel for 1.7 miles. Turn incorporates plenty of open space, makes it easier to right onto Hwy. 81 and travel 1.6 miles. Immediately put in or take boats out of the water. after bridge, bear left onto S 33-7.     A STORY OF THE WASHINGTON COUNTY UNORGANIZED TERRITORIES Prepared by John Dudley for Washington County Council of Governments March 2017 The story of the past of any place or people is a history, but this story is so brief and incomplete, I gave the title of “A Story”. Another person could have written quite a different story based on other facts. This story is based on facts collected from various sources and arranged in three ways. Scattered through one will find pictures, mostly old and mostly found in the Alexander- Crawford Historical Society files or with my families’ files. Following this introduction is a series on pictures taken by my great-grandfather, John McAdam Murchie. Next we have a text describing the past by subject. Those subjects are listed at the beginning of that section. The third section is a story told by place. The story of each of the places (32 townships, 3 plantations and a couple of organized towns) is told briefly, but separately. These stories are mostly in phrases and in chronological order. The listed landowners are very incomplete and meant only to give names to the larger picture of ownership from 1783. Maps supplement the stories. This paper is a work in progress and likely never will be complete. I have learned much through the research and writing of this story. I know that some errors must have found their way onto these pages and they are my errors. I know that this story is very incomplete. I hope correction and additions will be made. This is not my story, it is our story and I have made my words available now so they may be used in the Prospective Planning process.

To promote and protect the availability of outdoor recreation opportunities for all Maine citizens, including access to surface waters. B. Local Goals: For Discussion: Goal from the 1999 Comprehensive Plan: GOAL: To promote and protect the availability of outdoor recreation opportunities for all Biddeford citizens, including access to surface waters. 2. What is happening? (Conditions and Trends) A. Background: The City of Biddeford has many recreational opportunities open to residents and visitors. With eighteen parks including three salt water beaches, seven recreational facilities and ten other recreational-type facilities, Biddeford supports a strong recreational environment. As the population grows and/or changes demographically (refer to Demographics), however, the demand and need for recreational options evolves. B. Current Recreational Facilities and Programs in Biddeford: 1. Biddeford’s Beaches, Open Spaces, and Parks: Biddeford City Square. Biddeford City Square is located adjacent to City Hall at 205 Main Street. Erosion or accretion can reshape the beach and dunes over time so EHA remapping is needed for resource protection and coastal develop- ment. This map updates and supersedes the previous Beach and Dune Geology Aerial Photo series maps (Dickson, 2001) that were based on 1986 aerial photographs and field work. Using ESRI ArcGIS, each 1986 photograph was georeferenced, using a minimum of four ground control points per image, to orthophotographs from spring 2003 ORTHO_1F (1-ft resolution) and April 2001 ORTHO_HF (0.5-ft resolution) from the Maine Office of GIS. Previously mapped frontal dune and back dune boundaries were digi- D1 Frontal dune.     Hiking the Little River Community Trail, Belfast (South to North, from Rt. 1 to Rt. 52) (See page 2 for North to South) Difficulty: moderate Distance: Total is 4 miles one way. (Section 1 is 1 mile. Section 2 is 3 miles.) Hiking time: Total 3 hours. (Section 1 is 45 minutes. Section 2 is 2 hours 15 minutes.) Vertical rise: 400 feed, but terrain is rugged with gully crossings. Maps: Main Atlas and Gazetteer, map 14, B4 Directions: From the US1 and ME 52 traffic light in Belfast, drive US 1 south 2.4 miles, and turn right into the Belfast Water District. Park at the back of the lot (sign) where the trail starts at a kiosk, the trail follows blue blazes one mile to the Perkins Road, crosses, and continues 3 miles to Rt. 52 at the Walsh Ball Fields, diagonally across the street from the YMCA. The trail can be hiked as two separate hikes or as one. This is a good trail to hike, cross-country ski, or snowshoe. In any season it is a gem, and its location right in town makes it easy to get to. The two reservoirs and the Little River are picturesque, peaceful, and hospitable to wildlife. The Hike: Before leaving the Water District parking lot, have a look at the Lower Reservoir. Many species of waterfowl live and feed around its margins. The trail skirts its north shore under tall white pines, and as the reservoir narrows into the river, the trail ascends and descends hilly terrain. The mature woods are populated by nesting songbirds in spring and summer, and offer habitat for resident winter birds.

    MDEP NPS Management Program Annual Report - 2005 Branch Brook, Merriland River, Little River Watershed Management Plan #2001P-15 Waterbody Name: Merriland River, Branch Brook and Little River Location: Wells, Kennebunk and Sanford, York County Waterbody Status: Branch Brook - NPS Priority Watershed Project Sponsor: Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve Project Duration: May 2001 – February 2005 319 Grant Amount: $19,800 Match: $26,005 PROBLEM: The Little River watershed (31.5 square miles) includes two major tributaries – Branch Brook and Merriland River. Both tributaries begin near the Sanford airport, flow southeasterly and drain land from Wells and Kennebunk. They join together in the upper mile of the Little River estuary. Estuary water quality is considered poor due to high fecal coliform levels, and shellfish harvesting has been closed for the past twenty years. Microbial source tracking in 2002 indicated that about two-thirds of the identified E .coli samples were related to human activity including septic, pets and livestock. The watershed includes a municipal airport at the headwaters of Branch Brook, the aquifer of the Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Wells (KKW) Water District and several conservation lands including Laudholm Farms, Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR), and KKW Water District lands. There is an ever-growing threat of nutrient and toxic contamination from burgeoning commercial, recreational and residential development, much of which is located within 250 feet of the water. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The purpose of the project was to produce a community-based watershed management plan for the Branch Brook, Merriland River and Little River combined watershed. Watershed stakeholders met 9 times to identify current and emerging threats to water quality and develop strategies to manage them.
