BAROOSHIAN • MARCH 17, 2017 How much were the late King of Pop’s name and image worth when he died? His estate put the figure at $2,105 but the IRS believes the value is at least $434 million. That’s a huge discrepancy and with penalties and interest the total could exceed $1 billion. During the trial that ended on February 24th, the estate of Michael Jackson pointed to a lack of endorsement deals and accusations of child abuse to support its $2,105 value. The IRS, citing the success of Jackson’s estate in monetizing the singer’s name and image to gross more than $1 billion through licensing deals, believes that amount should be closer to its assessment of $434 million. When Michael Jackson died, he was entangled in legal battles, had taken major hits to his public image and was deeply in debt. After his death, the executors of Michael Jackson’s estate orchestrated a masterful turnaround and generated more than a billion dollars in revenue using the King of Pop’s likeness. While the concept of infringement upon an individual’s right to his or her image and right of publicity as a distinct commercial tort was recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1977, the issue of a celebrity’s estate being responsible for tax on the individual’s right of publicity was not addressed until a 1994 case involving the estate of V.C.

Biography Mark Ronson is an internationally renowned DJ and five-time-Grammy-Award-winning and Golden Globe-winning artist and producer. Ronson spent the first eight years of his life growing up in London, England. Having played guitar and drums from an early age, it wasn't until moving to New York City following his parents’ divorce, that he discovered DJ culture. At age 16, and already a fan of artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Run DMC and the Beastie Boys, Ronson began listening to mixtapes released by various hip hop DJs. Inspired, Ronson confiscated his step-father's vinyl collection and tried his hand at mixing. It was the first step in a career highlighted by work on a multi Grammy-winning album by Amy Winehouse, as well as his own Grammy-winning, global smash hit with Bruno Mars, "Uptown Funk." In the late 1990s into the early 2000s, the New York club scene was percolating with booming hip-hop and glitzy R&B. Ronson quickly earned himself a reputation through stints on the decks in downtown clubs before becoming the DJ of choice for many noteworthy parties. Hip-hop mogul Sean "P. Diddy" Combs hired Ronson to DJ his fabled 29th birthday bash. These and other high-profile gigs boosted Ronson's profile and connected him with other artists, many of whom were interested in collaborating. His first production gig came from British soul singer Nikka Costa and he found that his experience of working a club crowd informed his production skills. Fusing his eclectic turntable skills with his knowledge of musical instruments and songwriting, Ronson soon embarked on his first solo record.

Jesus said, Matthew 5:3–6 (NRSV) “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” Paul keeps us off balance when he writes: 1 Corinthians 1:18 (NRSV) For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. Humble pie goes down hard; the truth can be hard to swallow, but if we have the stomach for it, the truth will set us free. I believe that the present predicament that the Church in America finds itself in is a heaping helping of humble pie ala mode. Christians are perceived as judgmental, hypocritical, hateful, yet an article I read last year said that while the young adults interviewed had an unfavorable view of Christians, they did have a favorable image of Jesus. It is easy to judge those who judge us, but if we dare to be meek, humble, and teachable, our hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled.
