  • River Cam FACTS in BRIEF • the Cam Is 155 Km in Length and Covers a Catchment Area of 1,110 Square Km Within the Counties of Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Essex
NRA Anglian 91 FACT FI LE River Cam FACTS IN BRIEF • The Cam is 155 km in length and covers a catchment area of 1,110 square km within the counties of Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Essex. • Sourced near Henlow in Essex, the Cam is joined upstream of the city of Cambridge by three main watercourses, the Rhee, the Granta and Bourn Brook. This is'sliown in Figure 1, below. Downstream of Cambridge it joins the Old West River near Stretham, to become the River Great Ouse and 50 km later discharges into the Wash at Kings Lynn. / Y ^ • A range of chalk spring-fed water and peaty fenland rivers in the catchment has encouraged a richly diverse development of botanical and biological species. • Flowing through a region of rapidly expanding population the Cam’s catchment area is predominantly rural. Significant areas of light industry are found in Royston and Saffron Walden and also in Cambridge where many technological companies are located. Direction of flow (to sea) Many towns of historic interest and popular tourist f areas lie along the river. These include the university town of Cambridge with its colleges and charming streets, and Saffron Walden. They also have detailed newspaper cuttings files on over 750 topics that have been compiled since the 1960s. Newspapers sometimes get things wrong. I copy things out incorrectly. • Ely Standard Great War Articles 1914-1918: an Index, Compiled by Mike Petty
Mike Petty – Ely Standard 1914-1919 index Ely Standard Great War articles 1914-1918: an index, compiled by Mike Petty The Ely Standard articles give a detailed account of various aspects of local life during the Great War. It reports letters back from the front, lists casualties, mentions of Zeppelin raids, aircraft, conscientious objectors, German prisoners of war and local military hospitals. The paper also reports the heartbreak of Exemption Tribunal meetings where farmers plea to be allowed to keep workers on the land – these are particularly interesting, mentioning many names, and should be checked This index covers stories relating to the war and its impact on the villages around Ely including Adelaide, Coveney, Downham, Haddenham, Littleport, Manea, Mepal, Oxlode, Prickwillow, Pymore, Soham, Stretham, Stuntney, Thetford, Wentworth, Wicken, Witcham & Witchford. Some Chatteris and March stories are also mentioned. It does not cover many other aspects of ‘normal’ life that the paper reported These notes are not complete and there are inevitably mistakes. Please tell me those you notice. There are files of the Ely Standard on microfilm at Ely Library and in the Cambridgeshire Collection in Cambridge Central Library, who also hold the original volumes. Please make what use of these notes that you can. • CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY RAMBLING CLUB Lent Term 2014
CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY RAMBLING CLUB Lent Term 2014 To new ramblers and returning members alike, welcome to the Rambling Club! We invite you to leave the city for a few hours this term to enjoy the surrounding countryside with us. The pace of our walks is generally easy, as our main aim is to relax and appreciate the local scenery and villages. We sometimes stop at a village pub en route, but you should bring a packed lunch (except for half-day rambles) and a bottle of water anyway. Strong boots, waterproofs, and warm clothing are also recommended. Your only expense is the bus or train fare (given below), plus our £1 annual membership fee. There is no need to sign up in advance to join any of this term’s walks — just turn up at the time and place given. Our meeting points (unless otherwise noted) are: Bus: at the entrance to Drummer Street bus station, near the taxi rank / public toilets. Train: in the main hall of the Cambridge Railway Station. For more information and photos of past events, check out our website at www.srcf.ucam.org/curac Saturday 18th January “While I was going to St Ives” St Ives Circular 7.5 miles / 12 Contact: David km We start in the old market town of St Ives, famous for its most infamous inhabitant, Oliver Cromwell, its medieval bridge complete with a chapel, and its cameo in a well known nursery rhyme.
