{PDF} Avatar: the Last Airbender Ebook, Epub AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Gene Luen Yang | 242 pages | 26 Feb 2015 | DARK HORSE COMICS | 9781616555504 | English | Milwaukee, United States Avatar: The Last Airbender | Netflix The wars have been led by the flaming benders seriously, stop it who control fire and wiped out the air benders because they knew the Avatar was one of their number. With the air benders gone and the Avatar nowhere to be found, the benders are all under the thumb of the fire nation, with bending outlawed like it used to be in the Isle of Man. When sibling waterbenders Katara and Sokka discover a child frozen below the waters near their town they rescue him only to quickly learn he is the Avatar. They join him in his quest to learn to be bend the other elements and also free the kingdoms from the tyranny of the fire nation. I've not watched the original series so in a way I came to this film free of the built-in criticism of those who love the series and were always going to be upset by a poor copy. Normally this would mean that a poor version might still be a good film but obviously in this case I did come with the knowledge that it had been universally slated by critics and mostly ignored by audiences. So basically I had no preconceptions of how the film should look or be but at the same time my expectations were low due to all the criticism I had heard. So I guess it is understandable that I come out of the film saying "c'mon — it's not THAT bad" because it is not the crime against humanity that some have suggested. The effects are pretty decent and as a result some of the sequences are decent if only on a technical level. Well, I guess I'm done providing the critical balance here, so onto the parts of the film that are not the "pretty good" effects. Sadly this "rest of the film" is the vast majority of the two hour running time and it is pretty poor. Maybe the plot has potential but from the evidence of this it is a terrible heavy mess of mythology and nonsense that might have struggled to works in the hands of someone really able. Night Shyamalan is not an able person — he is someone who appears to have had a couple of good ideas Sixth Sense and Unbreakable , a couple of so-so films and then a growing collections of stinkers, in which camp this film belongs. In the hands of Shyamalan it is overly worthy, clunky, self-important and just a big bore full of gas. It is no surprise that within this frame he has written dialogue that is equally pompous with lots of terribly stiff lines which are almost a pain to listen to. As director he fails his cast. The adults seem to have enough about them to at least have presence but the younger cast members seem totally lost in terms of what they are doing and are painfully stiff and have no presence. As a director of action he is lacking as well; OK he handles the effects well but the fights lack tension and excitement and just seem silly most of the time. To those that say that the action sequences were cool then I would suggest you check out the countless martial arts films that do them better, with actual excitement and impressive director and choreography — because those on display here are a poor copy of the genre. Overall, it comes to something when the best that one can say about a film is that it is not the abomination that he majority say it is. However this is not me saying it is good; because I'm not; because it's not; not at all. It is clunky, stiff, self-important and lacks any sense of adventure, fun, character or charm — it is frankly a bore. I could care less if Shyamalan has upset fans of the original series with his version — he could have done that and still presented the rest of us with a decent film — but he hasn't He can get shirty with journalists who ask him about the downward trajectory of his career but ultimately he is doing nothing to suggest it is headed any other direction — The Last Airbender is not the worst film ever made, but it certainly another in the growing pile of stinkers that has his Shyamalan's name attached to them. I adore this show with every fibre of my being, and view it to be a piece of animated perfection. I implore people to avoid the disgusting live-action adaptation by director M. Night Shyamalan, as it is a disrespectful sham that mocks everything that the show stood for and mastered. So as for the show itself, where to begin? Well let's start with the story overall. Avatar tells a complete a perfectly paced epic plot over the course of 61 22 minute episodes. The show contains several unique and beautifully detailed characters among its main cast, all of whom are given consistent and engaging development throughout. From family related guilt and angst, identity dilemmas and the characters constant, overarching and looming quest, the characters are pressed with many trials which actually truly change them over the course of their magnificent journey. Aside from the primary cast, many intriguing and varied side characters appear throughout the adventure. They offer comedic levity, new forms of drama and help to add to the deep mythological and philosophical backbone of the show. All characters are exquisitely written and voice acted, with not a badly portrayed among them. Next I will cover the show's borderline legendary animation. It is a sight to behold indeed. I believe I am justified in believing that such stellar production values will never again be pared with this level of artistic imagination again, at least not in my lifetime. The scope, creativity and energy of the shows animation is second to no other show, and it's balance of colour is never anything less than sublime. Aside from sweeping and moving visuals, Avatar also offers fast paced and unbelievably well choreographed action scenes once again, second to none and well timed slapstick comedy.

In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 2 Abstract How and by what means is race ascribed to an animated body? My thesis addresses this question by reconstructing the production narratives around the Nickelodeon television series Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-08) and its sequel The Legend of Korra (2012-14). Through original and preexisting interviews, I determine how the ascription of race occurs at every stage of production. To do so, I triangulate theories related to race as a social construct, using a definition composed by sociologists Matthew Desmond and Mustafa Emirbayer; re-presentations of the body in animation, drawing upon art historian Nicholas Mirzoeff’s concept of the bodyscape; and the cinematic voice as described by film scholars Rick Altman, Mary Ann Doane, Michel Chion, and Gianluca Sergi. Even production processes not directly related to character design, animation, or performance contribute to the ascription of race. Therefore, this thesis also references writings on culture, such as those on cultural appropriation, cultural flow/traffic, and transculturation; fantasy, an impulse to break away from mimesis; and realist animation conventions, which relates to Paul Wells’ concept of hyper-realism.

    Pai Sho By Colleen Szeto University of Massachusetts Amherst Abstract There are innumerable innovative ways to use the technology of 3-D printing. It will redefine what becomes possible. Limitations cast by expenses, accessibility, tools, or materials, artists, engineers, enthusiasts, inventors, and even the average Joe will be capable of remixing, creating, and fixing products at the push of a button. While it does take some skill to learn the 3-D modeling software, users will find much of the software accommodating the printing world, such as SketchUp, to be approachable and relatively intuitive by design. Among many applications, 3-D printing launches fandom to a new level. Instead of waiting for replicas, fans can create their own, perhaps with an additional, more personalized twist. Instead of just giving a daughter a replica of the Master Sword from the Legend of Zelda, one could theoretically design one, engrave the sword with a favorite quote, a name, or a unique pattern, and hit, “print.” Pai Sho, a game from Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko’s Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra series, is not available on the shelves of Barnes and Noble. There is not a comparable computerized interpretation of the game, nor is there any indication that a mass-marketed version of the game will be launched, especially now that the series has come to an end.     Old West Investment Management, LLC January 11, 2021 Dear Investor, What a year!! 2020 will long be remembered for all the obvious reasons of pandemic, protesting, rioting and worldwide suffering. Had you told me one year ago what was coming, I would have predicted steep market losses. Of course, the market did fall dramatically by 34% during March, but then rallied throughout the balance of the year finishing in record territory. At Old West we participated in the March selloff, but then what happened to our portfolios was nothing short of remarkable. As you can see on your enclosed statement our portfolios had a fantastic year, eclipsing the benchmarks in each strategy. Our LP strategies returned an average of 65% and our SMA strategies returned an average of 66%. I have been investing for nearly fifty years and have been investing other people’s money for over twenty years, and I have never seen this type of out-performance of markets. One of the most difficult aspects of managing money is being early to ideas, and then waiting for the rest of the market to discover them. This requires a client base that believes in your team and investment process, and is willing to wait for your research to pay off. Well, pay off it did! Our team is thrilled for our clients and ourselves to have such an outstanding year. So how did we do it? Good old fashioned stock picking.
