Milton Public Schools Summer Reading Program Milton Public Schools Summer Reading Program © Collaborative Summer Library Program In Partnership with the Milton Public Library 2011 Grades K- 4 Summer Reading Program Milton Public Schools 2011 Dear Students and Parents, The Milton Public Schools’ Summer Reading Program is an extension of our commitment to a challenging education for all. This year we are partnering with the Milton Public Library’s Summer Reading Club. Please see the last two pages of this packet for further information regarding the Milton Public Library 2011 Summer Reading Club. Or log on to www.miltonlibrary.org . Look for Summer Reading club link of the Children’s Room page. Studies have shown that reading as a leisure activity is one of the most powerful tools to help student maintain skills and gain a better understanding of the world around them. You can help your child to keep his/her interest in reading and learning. Consider helping your child to find books that match his/her special interests or hobbies and look for a variety of reading materials. We have provided lists of books, which are only suggestions. Many of the authors have written other wonderful books, so please check out additional titles by your favorite author(s). These lists are not meant to be your only sources for reading suggestions. We encourage you to visit the public library or your favorite bookstore to find other books of interest. Most public libraries will also have prepared summer reading lists that might include great books not on these lists, so check them out! **We require that all students read a minimum of five books and keep a reading log! ** Students should fill in the titles of the books that they have read and return the reading log to their teacher during the first few days of school. We always strive to have 100% participation in our Summer Reading Program. In addition, all students entering grade four and five are required to complete a simple book project on TWO of their summer reading selections. These can be included as two of the five required books. These projects should be student created and are not meant to be an extensive activity. Students will be asked to present their book projects in the fall. Below you will find a short list of possible activities. Your child’s teacher or school may also provide a book project or template. All projects should contain the Title and Author. We look forward to hearing about books your child has enjoyed. Project ideas: Diorama – representing favorite scene or character Simple poster - (8 ½ X 11 – 11x14) Letter to the teacher - Describe why you liked the book, or talk about your favorite character. Book Response – Write a brief essay about the main events of the story, the characters and why you chose to read this book. Advertisement/ Book Review – Create an advertisement or write a book review to convince others to read this book. Log on to the Milton Public Library – Join the Summer Reading Club and post a book review These are just a few suggestions; your child may have an idea for another creative project. The Milton Public Library will have a copy of the summer reading list and the librarians will be happy to assist you and your child with selecting books. Reading offers enjoyment and opportunities to learn. Developing the life-long habit of reading is closely linked to success in school and in life. We hope your summer is filled with lots of books and lots of fun! • Appendix B: a Literary Heritage I
Appendix B: A Literary Heritage I. Suggested Authors, Illustrators, and Works from the Ancient World to the Late Twentieth Century All American students should acquire knowledge of a range of literary works reflecting a common literary heritage that goes back thousands of years to the ancient world. In addition, all students should become familiar with some of the outstanding works in the rich body of literature that is their particular heritage in the English- speaking world, which includes the first literature in the world created just for children, whose authors viewed childhood as a special period in life. The suggestions below constitute a core list of those authors, illustrators, or works that comprise the literary and intellectual capital drawn on by those in this country or elsewhere who write in English, whether for novels, poems, nonfiction, newspapers, or public speeches. The next section of this document contains a second list of suggested contemporary authors and illustrators—including the many excellent writers and illustrators of children’s books of recent years—and highlights authors and works from around the world. In planning a curriculum, it is important to balance depth with breadth. As teachers in schools and districts work with this curriculum Framework to develop literature units, they will often combine literary and informational works from the two lists into thematic units. Exemplary curriculum is always evolving—we urge districts to take initiative to create programs meeting the needs of their students. The lists of suggested authors, illustrators, and works are organized by grade clusters: pre-K–2, 3–4, 5–8, and 9– 12.
