Summer Reading Program Milton Public Schools 2011

Dear Students and Parents,

The Milton Public Schools’ Summer Reading Program is an extension of our commitment to a challenging education for all. This year we are partnering with the Milton Public Library’s Summer Reading Club. Please see the last two pages of this packet for further information regarding the Milton Public Library 2011 Summer Reading Club. Or log on to www.miltonlibrary.org . Look for Summer Reading club link of the Children’s Room page.

Studies have shown that reading as a leisure activity is one of the most powerful tools to help student maintain skills and gain a better understanding of the world around them. You can help your child to keep his/her interest in reading and learning. Consider helping your child to find books that match his/her special interests or hobbies and look for a variety of reading materials. We have provided lists of books, which are only suggestions. Many of the authors have written other wonderful books, so please check out additional titles by your favorite author(s). These lists are not meant to be your only sources for reading suggestions. We encourage you to visit the public library or your favorite bookstore to find other books of interest. Most public libraries will also have prepared summer reading lists that might include great books not on these lists, so check them out!

**We require that all students read a minimum of five books and keep a reading log! **

Students should fill in the titles of the books that they have read and return the reading log to their teacher during the first few days of school. We always strive to have 100% participation in our Summer Reading Program.

In addition, all students entering grade four and five are required to complete a simple book project on TWO of their summer reading selections. These can be included as two of the five required books. These projects should be student created and are not meant to be an extensive activity. Students will be asked to present their book projects in the fall. Below you will find a short list of possible activities. Your child’s teacher or school may also provide a book project or template. All projects should contain the Title and Author. We look forward to hearing about books your child has enjoyed.

Project ideas: Diorama – representing favorite scene or character Simple poster - (8 ½ X 11 – 11x14) Letter to the teacher - Describe why you liked the book, or talk about your favorite character. Book Response – Write a brief essay about the main events of the story, the characters and why you chose to read this book. Advertisement/ Book Review – Create an advertisement or write a book review to convince others to read this book. Log on to the Milton Public Library – Join the Summer Reading Club and post a book review

These are just a few suggestions; your child may have an idea for another creative project. The Milton Public Library will have a copy of the summer reading list and the librarians will be happy to assist you and your child with selecting books.

Reading offers enjoyment and opportunities to learn. Developing the life-long habit of reading is closely linked to success in school and in life. We hope your summer is filled with lots of books and lots of fun!

MILTON PUBLIC LIBRARY 2011 SUMMER READING CLUB FAQ’ S © Collaborative Summer Library Program

• What are the dates for the reading club? Registration starts June 13. You can begin “logging” reading June 20. Last date to sign up is August 5 and the last date to log your time is August 12. • What are the age limits for the reading club? Children from age 3 through 12 (entering grade 7 in September) may participate. • How can children who can’t yet read participate? By having stories read to them. Even children who are independent readers may count stories that are read to them. (Audio books also count!) • Does the club have meetings? The summer reading club is a club without meetings. Children are welcome to attend our summer programs whether they are club members or not. Club members do not have to be at the library at special times. It’s an “on your own” reading program • How do I register for the club? Children register on-line from home or at the library at www.miltonlibrary.org . Look for the Summer Reading Club link on the Children’s Room page and follow the directions there. Each child will need to select a user name and password as part of the registration process. Be sure to remember yours. (The Library can help if you forget, though.) • Why does the library need a phone number or e-mail address? Club members are eligible for special prize drawings during the program. We need to contact children whose names are drawn. An e-mail address also lets us send reminders of special events and of approaching deadlines. Contact information is never shared and is only used for library business. • How do I record my reading? On the Children’s Room Summer Reading web page you will find a link to print this year’s Time Log. Log sheets for listing your reading can also be obtained at the library. Or you can use the calendar log on the back of this page. • How does the log sheet work? This year children will be keeping track of time read, with our goal being to earn a donation to Heifer International. Our Time Log is set up to count minutes in 15 minute blocks. Follow the directions on the log sheet. If you prefer you can make up your own time log. Just be sure to come back to the summer reading page and enter your times on your club page. We’ll track the overall total in the children’s room so you can come in and see how we’re doing toward our town goal of 100,000 minutes. • What should I read? You may read whatever you want! The choice is yours – stories, information books, magazines, graphic novels, audiobooks, whatever. Books that you read from school lists can also be counted. You can also submit short book reviews through your club page. • How do I contact the library? Call the Children’s Room at 617-898-4957. Our summer hours are Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday 9am to 9pm, Thursday 1pm to 9pm, Friday 9 am to 5:30pm, and Saturday 9am to 5pm.
