JOHN NEWBERY AWARD COMMITTEE MANUAL October 2009 John Newbery Award Committee Manual – Formatted August 2015 1 FOREWORD John Newbery The Newbery Medal is named for John Newbery (1713-1767), known as the first publisher of books for children. The son of a farmer, he married a widow who owned a printing business in Reading, England. They moved to London and, in 1743, Newbery published “A Little Pretty Pocket-Book, intended for the Instruction and Amusement of Little Master Tommy and Pretty Miss Polly, with an agreeable Letter to read from Jack the Giant-Killer, as also a Ball and a Pincushion, the use of which will infallibly make Tommy a good Boy and Polly a good Girl.” Although this was not the first book published for children (A Play-Book for Children was published by “J.G.” as early as 1694), Newbery was the first person to take children’s book publishing seriously, and many of his methods were copied by other authors and publishers. Newbery was an admirer of John Locke, who advocated teaching children through “some easy pleasant book, suited to his capacity.” Newbery’s books invariably had their didactic side, but he tempered instruction with a sense of humor. Works like Goody Two-Shoes, in which a poor but virtuous young woman is rewarded with riches, satisfied the moralists while providing a story with all the ups and downs of a modern soap opera. Other books on Newbery’s list included Aesop’s Fables, books of history and science, miscellanies, and even a children’s magazine, The Lilliputian Magazine, which contained stories, riddles, and songs. -

The Children’s Books of Nancy Willard page 1 Cover Photograph by Eric Lindbloom page 2 2 Inside Cover An Exhibition Vassar College Library 2017 ˙ 3 page 3 Checklist # 16 4 page 4 Preface For many years Nancy Willard (1936-2017) was one of Vassar’s most colorful and beloved faculty members. She could often be seen riding her bike across campus, and always took time to talk with others. Willard taught in the English Department, and in her classes she encouraged students to develop their imaginative skills and tell their own stories. She was also a major writer who published many works and won a number of literary awards. Her output was wide-ranging, and included poetry, novels, short stories, and scholarly articles. In addition, Willard was especially well-known for her stories for children. This fall’s library exhibition, The Children’s Books of Nancy Willard, therefore focuses on one remarkable aspect of the author’s writing life. Forty books are on display here, dating over a period of several decades. Many of the books were collaborations with important artists. Perhaps the most acclaimed title is A Visit to William Blake’s Inn, which won the John Newbery Medal in 1982. As a group these titles represent Willard’s amazing creativity and substantial contributions to the field of children’s literature. The exhibition takes place during the same year as the 90th anniversary of Vassar’s Wimpfheimer Nursery School. Throughout its long history, the school has offered a child- centered environment and a developmentally appropriate curriculum on Vassar’s campus. -

Course/Grade Text Type Grade 7 Book Unit Cathedral: The Informative/ Explanatory (15 Days) Story of Its Construction (1120L) Portfolio Writing Prompt: After reading Cathedral, write an essay that describes how a famous building or a specific building in your community was constructed. Research the reasons the structure was built and the way the structure has been used over the years. Include multimedia resources such as a power point, video, posters or other multimedia to clarify your essay. Common Core Writing: Text types, responding to reading, and research The Standards acknowledge the fact that whereas some writing skills, such as the ability to plan, revise, edit, and publish, are applicable to many types of writing, other skills are more properly defined in terms of specific writing types: arguments, informative/explanatory texts, and narratives. Standard 9 stresses the importance of the reading-writing connection by requiring students to draw upon and write about evidence from literary and informational texts. Because of the centrality of writing to most forms of inquiry, research standards are prominently included in this strand, though skills important to research are infused throughout the document. (CCSS, Introduction, 8) Informational Text Informational/explanatory writing conveys information accurately. This kind of writing serves one or more closely related purposes: to increase readers knowledge of a subject, to help readers better understand a procedure or process, or to provide readers with an enhanced comprehension of a concept. -

Appendix B: A Literary Heritage I. Suggested Authors, Illustrators, and Works from the Ancient World to the Late Twentieth Century All American students should acquire knowledge of a range of literary works reflecting a common literary heritage that goes back thousands of years to the ancient world. In addition, all students should become familiar with some of the outstanding works in the rich body of literature that is their particular heritage in the English- speaking world, which includes the first literature in the world created just for children, whose authors viewed childhood as a special period in life. The suggestions below constitute a core list of those authors, illustrators, or works that comprise the literary and intellectual capital drawn on by those in this country or elsewhere who write in English, whether for novels, poems, nonfiction, newspapers, or public speeches. The next section of this document contains a second list of suggested contemporary authors and illustrators—including the many excellent writers and illustrators of children’s books of recent years—and highlights authors and works from around the world. In planning a curriculum, it is important to balance depth with breadth. As teachers in schools and districts work with this curriculum Framework to develop literature units, they will often combine literary and informational works from the two lists into thematic units. Exemplary curriculum is always evolving—we urge districts to take initiative to create programs meeting the needs of their students. The lists of suggested authors, illustrators, and works are organized by grade clusters: pre-K–2, 3–4, 5–8, and 9– 12. -
