Back in 2003, Canadian trainers Mark Casse and Catherine Day Phillips both found themselves bidding on hip 3133, a bay Langfuhr colt bred by Gustav Schickedanz in On- tario. Casse wound up having the final winning bid of $2,500, but offered the yearling to Day Phillips, who signed for him in the name of her family=s Kingfield Racing Stable. While it took Jambalaya four tries to break his maiden, he did so with aplomb in his turf bow and promptly rattled off four straight victories, includ- ing an eight-length triumph in the Breeder=s S. at Wood- bine and the GIII Saranac S. at Saratoga. The gelding won just once in his next eight starts, the Singspiel S. at Woodbine last June, but ran Better Talk Now to a head in the GII Sky Classic H. over the same course Sept. 24 before closing out 2006 with a ninth in the GI Canadian International Oct. 22. After finishing third in the GIII Canadian Turf H. Feb. 3 at Gulfstream, Jambalaya gave Day Phillips her first Grade I win as a trainer when he outfinished Honey Ryder and Einstein (Brz) in the Gulfstream Park BC H. Feb. 24, then added the GIII Pan American H. over that course Mar. 31. Given a well-deserved vacation, the five-year-old was beaten 3/4 of a length when third in the GII King Ed- ward BC H. at Woodbine July 2 and, 20 days later, filled the same spot in the GII Northern Dancer S. at the Toronto oval. Breaking from the rail, Jambalaya saved ground in fourth as Sunriver (Saint Ballado) led from The Tin Man through splits of :26.34, :50.88 and 1:16.15, which were far slower than the other Festival races.
