It’s a pleasure for me to welcome all of you to Seoul. For many of you it has been a long trip, for others at last a short one. But in any case, the SED meeting is home to all of us. Thanks to the excellent work of the program chairs, Virgiliu Midrigan and Josep Pijoan-Mas, and their collaborators, we have an exciting program and in our exchange of ideas, distances blur. As in previous years, many papers presented here will later appear in RED and other leading economic journals; I am sure they will benefit from discussions in and out of our sessions; so, there is much to thank the program organizers for. Great papers, sessions and discussions are the landmark of our meetings, but the place, logistics and social events also define their success. On this score we should thank Yonsei University for hosting us, as well as thanking those who have provided financial support (Korean Ministry of Strategy and Finances, Bank of Korea, Korea Development Institute, and Samsung Corporation) and especially the local organizers who, behind the scenes, have collaborated through their efforts: Yongsung Chang, Jang-Ok Cho, Sun-Bin Kim, Hyun Song Shin, Kwanho Shin and Tack Yun. I am sure this year’s meeting is going to be fun too! What is new for us – having a meeting in Asia – is only a reflection of something that is certainly not new in Economic Dynamics: the increasing number of Asian scholars contributing to our research, meetings, and journals. For many of you this meeting in Seoul may be a discovery of a vibrant city, while for the Society it is no more than an overdue recognition that excellent economic research is also spreading East. Enjoy the meeting! Ramon Marimon President of the Society for Economic Dynamics 3 SED 2013 | Society for Economic Dynamics Program Committee Members Program Chairs Virgiliu Midrigan New York Univ. Streets and Open Spaces in Seoul (1995– 2010) : A Cultural and Geographical View of Local Neighborhoods* Valérie GELÉZEAU Introduction The transformation of Seoul’s cityscape and urban morphology since the 1970s has been the topic of a tremendous body of research in various fields of the social sciences interested in the construction of landscape. Based upon the perspective of cultural geography, this chapter proposes a particular focus on what is generally considered as “open space,” grounded on a two-fold entry: first, the analysis is centered on a particular urban object, the street, one of the matrix of urban tissue; second, the analysis is oriented more specifically on the scale of neighborhood communities in residential areas.

We have a very exciting program for this year’s meeting. There are 432 papers in 108 sessions covering all areas of macroeconomics. Our plenary speakers are Susan Athey (Harvard), Bob Hall (Stanford), and Ellen McGrattan (Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis). We set a new record with 1310 submissions, and because of space limitations a number of excellent papers did not make it onto the program. Under the guidance of our past presidents Tom Sargent, Ed Prescott, Dale Mortensen, Tom Cooley, Boyan Jovanovic, and David Levine, all of you have helped our meetings grow from the first one (Minneapolis, 1990) into the large and intellectually significant affair they are today. Putting together a meeting on such a large scale involves a lot of work. So, thanks go to the 41‐member program committee who selected the papers in a timely manner. A particular thanks go to our local organizers, Rui Castro and Francisco Ruge‐Murcia, who pulled this all together. Our officers, Ellen McGrattan (Treasurer) and Christian Zimmermann (Secretary) also played a key role. As you know, these meetings are costly endeavors.

    1. WHERE TO STAY There are a number of possibilities for hotels. (1) Yonsei Guest House Yonsei University has a very nice guest house in the campus. From the guest house, you can walk to the meeting room in about 10 minutes. The room has a good working desk and has a good price (KRW 70,000 (about US$60) for single occupancy, KRW 80,000 for double occupancy, KRW 120,000 for suite). Equivalently equipped hotels would cost 2-3 times. Yonsei University is in the center of Seoul and a variety of public transportation is available. So you will have easy access to the city. Since there are only 38 rooms, I already made a block reservation for 20 persons (Oct. 16-24). However, the guest house wants each reservation confirmed in a week or two. Please note that you need to make a reservation through me since the guest house does not take reservations from public. So if you want to stay in the guest house, please let me know your arrival and departure dates as soon as possible. Then I will send you a required form. Internet will be freely provided in the campus. Each room of the guest house has an internet port. However, they say that some recent notebooks do not work properly. Yonsei Campus Map (2) Hotels There are a number of hotels in all classes around the university. Deluxe hotels will cost about $150-200 and will take 10 minutes by taxi (cost $4-5). I found the following websites provide hotel reservation in English.
