BONOMELLI Heteroptera on flowering spontaneous herbs in differently managed orchards (*) Abstract - Heteroptera were collected on spontaneous herbs, during flowering, in two environments with different mowing management. The highest number of Heteroptera was collected on Medicago sativa, Daucus carota, Centaurea nigre- scens and Erigeron annuus. As foreseeable, a higher number of species was found in the environment less influenced by traditional farming methods and with a higher number of plant species. Sono state considerate le specie di Eterotteri raccolte su piante spontanee, al momento della fioritura, in due ambienti con diversa gestione degli sfalci. Le pian- te su cui sono stati catturati più Eterotteri sono Medicago sativa, Daucus carota, Centaurea nigrescens ed Erigeron annuus. Come prevedibile, la località caratte- rizzata da un maggiore numero di specie è risultata quella con una maggiore ric- chezza botanica, meno disturbata dalle pratiche colturali. As Heteroptera show a considerable differentiation in food diets, they can offer a good measure of biodiversity; the richness in species in this Order is strongly related to the total insect diversity (Duelli & Obrist, 1998). In many crops Heteroptera repre- sent most of the total fauna; they are particularly abundant in unsprayed apple and pear orchards, where they form 30-50% of predators throughout the growing season (Fauvel, 1999). Many species are supported by moss and lichens, found on unsprayed trees harbouring bark dwelling insects, such as Psocids (Fauvel, 1999).

No general solution of the problem appears to be possible, but the brilliant attack by Henze and Blair1 makes the calculation of the number of isomeric alcohols of any given carbon content from the number of those of fewer carbon atoms a not too arduous task. Going further and with a similar approach, Henze and Blair2 devised formulas for calculating the number of stereoisomeric and non-stereoisomeric alcohols of a given carbon content, again, of course, presupposing such a knowledge for the alcohols of one less carbon content.

My previous paper described the late summer aspect of the Hete­ ropterous fauna of Korshage (Bocher 1967). In the Addendum of that paper I briefly mentioned the present investigation, which is attempting a comparison, confined to the herb stratum, between the bug faunas of July and August 1966. Concerning situation, physiography and plant communities of the study area, see Bocher 1967. There is, however, a single cor­ rection. In the present paper the term "Carex dune grassland" is restricted to the very uniform, strongly Carex arenaria-dominated vegetation in the north-western part of the area (cf. Bocher 1967, pp. 43, 55, 56). The remainder of what was formerly denoted "Carex dune grassland" is now refered to as "Grey dune grass- . land", as it is always situated at the margins of the typical grey dune. A survey of the division into plant communities is presented in Table 1; the numbering differs a little from that used in 1967. 11. Methods etc. The method of collection was sweeping. The unit sample was 50 strokes, but this is not strictly comparable to the samples from 1963 and 1965 because a somewhat smaller net (28 cm diameter) was used in 1966. Just as in the previous investigation (where this was not pointed out) the main guide for sampling was that every plant community should be equally well represented, relative both to the area it is covering and to its diversity.

In the biotopes examined 118 species of terrestrial Heteroptera have been found up to now, which offered a rather good picture of the biogeography of the zone. Most species are very widespread (Palaearctic, Eurosibiric, Euromediterraneo-turanic, Euromediterranean and Mediterranean species). Especially interesting are the Eurosibiric species typical of cold climates, which in Sicily have found a suitable refuge on the Nebrodi, at the higher levels, and the more tipically Mediterranean species: these two groups characterize the hemiptero-fauna of the Nebrodi. Among the Eurosibiric species Ceratocombus coleoptratus Zeit, is particularly interesting since it represents the first record in Sicily of a member of the family Ceratocombidae.
